Whats the bigest boomer I can put in win 70 ultra action.
Ok, I been shooting LB404's 500 jeffery and have just loved it ( wow what a gun) anyho I have a winchester model 70 in 300 ultra that I would like to make in to a boomer. I have a 375 h&h ( that I would lkie to make a 375 wby but need a reamer) a 375 ultra and a 416 rem.
The 458 Lott looks like the best one but what else is out there?
Thanks

there is also the ultracats by z-hat 458, and 416...just a barrel swap. www.z-hat.com since you already shoot the 416 i would recomend that. you already are using ultra brass and have 416 bullets. should be the simplest/cheapest wildcat. if you do the 470 a.r. like i am doing you could stick the bullets out further in that action and get even more power or lower preasure than the reg a.r. and a significant increase over the capstick. i like the idea of the 470 for being a biiiiig bullet and use 400gr pistol bullets for plinking/hogs.

Ok so what is the 470 ar based off and can you get the brass with the proper head stamp.

The AR is based off a shortned RUM case, fireformed and poof!, bob's your uncle.

500gr woodleighs, 26" barrel, can hit 2400 though I run them at 2300 for less pressure.. 400gr speer golddots at 2450-2500

have a look ..

you can also just rebarrel to 404 Jeffery and loaded to 65,000 PSI it'll blow the leaves off most of the trees as well.

With a hellish amount of work you can turn a model 70 into a 585 nyati. Or a 495 A-Square. The biggest factory cartridge you can fit into it without radical alteration is the 470 capstick. for wildcats, the AR rounds offer an easy conversion with an advantage in powder capacity, although for any of the AR rounds I would use a 1-10 twist rather than 1-18 or 1-14 to achieve better bullet stability in flesh.

The .404j is pretty straight forward, I have one on a RUM. Makes a nice rifle even though some fo the purists disaprove.moon

Dan,
I can agree with that... if a fella likes a faster twist he should get it.. i did that with the 358 win..

If you already have a 3.6" round action, and you want the biggest boomer, you should easily get a 470-404 Imp in there, which will beat the 470 AR, albeit by only a bit.
Not much difference in the two, except that the AR loses almost a third-inch of your available space. Great for Ruger 7mm Rem's, but not "the biggest boomer you can put" in your gun.

If I am not mistaken, an 500 Jeffery can be made up on that Winchester action. PRDATOR, did you shoot today? I made it up there about 0915 and shot till 1300. I shot the 485 Lott and the 500 Jeffery off the bags. Not as bad as I had originally thought it would be. Twenty rounds of the big boys will get your attention.
