One thing about this set up, you should be able to get the scope far enough away to keep your eyebrow in good shape.

Keep us posted,

Keith

Now THAT! was funny!

There's enough rail on that beast to mount a tactical light, night scope, rangefinder, barometer, and a megaphone.

well the rifle only weighed in at 8 lbs and I had this 2.5 power scout scope left over from an m1a project so I wanted a scout mount and a little more weight. sooo the rail came in a standard leingth and after I cut a piece off for the back scope mount I barly had enough for the scout scope and I wanted to be able to mount a standard scope incase I hated the scout. I pulled up just short of integral pop up sights in the rail and decided to use an eo tech as my back up iron sights. because I will have this rifle in africa in about 30 days. I have a little belt pouch for the back up sight and its is lit and all kinds of neat stuff. digginI just had to stop in time to parkerize before the trip.

I have one on a 416 rem that works great and they are bullet resistant for sure.
I am kinda reluctant to post a picture of it because I turned a one piece weaver base bass ackward and added a screw through it to the rear sight base to make the scout mount on it. but it works like a champ.

As long as you're happy with it. To me it looks ugly, but then I did kind of like my old Minimi and feel that an A 10 can be handy to have on your side, too.

Good luck, go for it, and keep us posted on how it works out?

Cheers, Dave.

I would say it's not quite a train wreck but it is certainly a train. Like the old timers used to call a heavy rifle, an express train.

Put one of those Picatinny rails on the underside of the barrel and you could mount a Surefire for night shooting PAC elephant! Big Grin

the ruger quarter rib from their scout rifle with integral scope mounts would be better looking but I did not have time to make an adapter from ruger ring to the eo tech/weaver rail

I had a dog like that once. He was a good pet and a dear friend.

I'll be interested in seeing if the Eotech is up to the task.

Form follows function.
I would recommend you use several screws to hold the front rail to the action/bbl.

The 458 has quite a bit of quick acceleration/recoil velocity.

My only worry would be the screws of the base shearing off.

I broke 3 sets of SAKO scope mounts on a 20" bbled SAKO 375 H&H Handy Rifle.

If the EO-Tech does not stand up you might try the Zeiss Z-Point. They advised me it will take the recoil of the 500's.

Just use more screws, it really hurts when the scope flies off the rifle ahd hits you in the face, Eeker Mad [see comments about the SAKO above.

I think I would put a couple more in the front rail.

Also if you check around you can find some pretty neat rear "iron" sights that fit the rail system.

Rail bases are actually pretty good as they make a wide variety of sighting systems possible.

With a good quaility rail and good quality mounts return to zero is very good.

You have to have courage and skill to do what you've done. The more you do the better and better your results will get. Few have the abilities to build a DGR by themselves and you should be proud of yourself! My EOTECH is on a 14 inch 500S&W pistol that kicks like hell. If it holds up to THAT a LOTT SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM.-Rob

Now all you have to do is paint it DIGITAL cam ouflage, add a flash supressor (in case the hyena shoot back), a zytel pistol grip, a tactical flashlight, tactical illuminated reticle night scope,a green laser to blind the animals, a red laser to range them, and a remote RF triggering device linked to a digital trail camera, and you will have the ULTIMATE TACTICAL SAFARI RIFLE

I am painting it but just plain green. did you miss the tac light and illuninated scope alerady there? I tryed the zeytel handel but it kept breaking off due to recoil and realy hurt my elbow , poor ergonomics. I have a real live cameraman can range with my naked eye to within +- 3 cm and I plan to be close enough to smell their breath so muzzle flash will blind them. and so far as I have seen I have the most tactical safari rifle ever already. jumping jumping

Good work. thumb
If you have four 8x40 screws holding the scout base and two more on the rear picatinny, that is plenty.

Just use JB Weld to bed and adhere the rail wherever it contacts the barrel or action.

I have a similar (shorter!) cross-slotted rail on the barrel of my .510JAB/500A2 Ruger No.1. It has only four 8x40 screws and it is glued down with JB Weld, and it has never been a problem in over 200 shots with scopes from 1.5x5 to 4x16 Mildot, both held on with 4 rings.

The JB Weld will be nearly invisible and is easily removable with heat from a torch ... but you will never need to mess with it again if you use JB Weld.
