Did you handle it in person? Just curious how the fit/finish/feel were.

It is prettier than the Spartan but I would have to sell two or three rifles and a nice pistol at a big loss to finance that.

I believe that gun might be screaming to become a 450 #2 ! It might punch you like Mike Tyson at 8 pounds but would carry like a dream!

I have seen a couple other doubles in 45-70 but they are limited to SAAMI specs which isn't to impressive. What is this one rated at pressure wise.Hopefully atleast Ruger #1 at 50,000 CUP.

Very nice...

Nothing personal friend but a $5,400 45-70 is not in my (even distant) future.

That is one nice looking rifle, but does this company make any other chamberings for their doubles? At the same price, anyway????

I think they may have made it as a .45-70 because for an Italian company to make or sell a firearm, the cartridge has to be on some Italian government agency's list of recognized cartridges. The .45-70 and a .470 NE are on the list of recognized cartridges, a .450 NE or a .450 NE #2 are not on that official list and therefore are not legal to produce in Italy.

This explanation could be wrong, unfortunately I have since forgotten where I heard or read it.

I really wonder what these sell for in Europe and how badly the importer is screwing US consumers. I say this because I ran across a Euro web site selling Chapuis 9,3x74s for 3000 Euros the other day. Eeker

These guns are available in 9.3 x 74 and 45-70 class cartridges. I don't think they do the stopping calibers on that frame or at that price, if at all.

As a rule of thumb, European made guns cost about 40% less than you're paying an importer.

That's based on 11% in FET and about 30% profit for the importer. Some make more and some make less.

PS - don't forget that 3K Euro = 3600K US.

OK....so G&H charges $500 to import up to three $3600 Chapuis 9,3s. Add shipping and brokerage fees and this might still work out to be a hell of a deal I think.

hmmmm....there might be an idea hatching here! Anyone up for a Chapuis 9,3 or two, or ten? Big Grin

Seems a stretch. I have to believe any Italian agency regulating firearms would respect the listings of Europe's counterpart to SAAMI, the CIP. The CIP has ratings for the .450, both 450/400's, the 465, and even odd balls like the .369, etc.

Just curious Boomstick,

Who died and made you the cartridge Nazi?

That is a handsome rifle. I wonder what you can get one for in a simple field grade model? Seems that it would be a pretty simple job to re cut to a .450 NE. If the action can handle it.

The 450/400 3 1/4 is not importable into Italy as it is not in their book of recognized cartridges. It is possible that the 450 3 1/4 and the 450#2 aren't either.

Why change it into something it is not and may not be capable of ever being? If you guys want a bigger rifle than buy a bigger rifle.

It is not as simple as running a reamer through it. There are a lot of other considerations and, after you are done, all you've got is a $5400 rifle that you have ruined.

I doubt if it is rated at 50,000 cup. That is expecting alot don't you think?

Not really. The .457 Wild West Mag is built on the Marlin 1895 action and is rated at 45,000 CUP in a levergun that also uses 45-70 cartridges so I would think a good double rifle could handle 50,000 CUP but I don't no didly about doubles.Way out of my price range. Frowner

Granted, for E3000 we are talking about the extractor version without a cheekpiece but I think I might be able to deal with that. Anyone up for a group buy that might lower the costs? If enough are intrigued, I can contact G&H and get a better idea of shipping and other import costs. Already got one PM on the subject so feel free to PM me.

Best,

John

I KNOW! I about drooled all over my kepboard when I stumbled onto that site. Hate to maybe burst your bubble but the "Artisan" version of the RGEX is still 7000 Euros plus but a Basic "RGEX" with ejectors, cheekpiece, a bit more engraving, and some nicer wood is still 4190. I think the real advantage to something like this group buy is to get guys into a double for the 3000 Euros...For some of us, even the going rate of $5800 for a 9,3 is a bit much for such a specialized weapon. $4K though or so becomes damn palatable.

John

STOP THIS BANTER NOW!

Ok, not every European rifle and shotgun is cheaper in Europe. Beretta, Benelli, Franchi, and Blaser R93s and K95s are cheaper in the states. Sakos and Tikkas are cheaper in the states.

Only models with limited American sales and appeal are cheaper in Europe.

Never forget about buying power! Execpt Spain and Italy there are only about 300-500 thousand hunters per country in the EU. Spain and Italy have 3 times that many minimum.

Some models don't have much American appeal.

For Blaser this is the D99, B97/95, and S-2.
For Beretta this is the double rifles.
For Browning this is the double rifles.
For Merkel this is all guns.
For Kreighoff this is all rifles but the shotguns are cheaper in the states.

Remember a M700 BDL cost $1100 in Europe minimum. A M70 in 416 Remington or a Weatherby MKV 300 Deluxe is E2000.

Swarovski, Leica, Zeiss, Schmidt and Bender prices are all different. Some models are cheaper in America some are cheaper in Europe. Most are a lot more expensive in Europe.

Swaorvski EL binoculars are from E1400 to E2000. Thats $2000-2500.

Here's the import deal, Euro to dollar conversion is not what you read in the Wall street Journal. If the current exchange rate stated is $1.20usd for 1 euro then the real exchange rate is at least seven cents more. Making that $1.27-1.30 that's 27points right there. Then add 2.7% duty and 11% federal excise tax, plus customs broker and shipping and insurance. Believe me you won't find any bargins.

If you are paying 5% over for Euros, you
might want to consider getting a better bank.
You are getting screwed. We deal with a lot of
European companies and wire money all the time.
Published exchange price is always within $.005
of actual. Doesn't matter if it is $500 or
lots more.

You will be lucky to find a new 9.3X74R S/S double rifle for $5,875 today, that is if you can find on at all, in the USA! Even the Merkel 9.3s are going for $7500 to $10,500 depending on model. O/Us can be found in the $5K range new, however. Even the used O/Us are going for $6K up for Browning, and Beretta.

If someone knows where I can buy a new Cahpuis 9.3X74R S/S double rifle for $3600 US, I'll buy two today!

MAC,

That is the point. I got a call in to G&H to do the importation and they are going to email me an estimate of total costs to import some of these 3000 Euro rifles from France. If you are in for two, send me a PM as that will put up to about a dozen rifles total (assume all interested parties follow through). These high order numbers will keep the individual costs down thats for sure.

Best,

John

I think I may have been the first to respond. If this can be done for $4000 each, let's do it. Actually, if I could get one with no cheekpiece, two triggers and extractors, I would prefer it to the US version.
