Do any of you have luminox watches? Seems like good cost effective hunting watch if it can stand up to recoil.

My omega seamaster has shit the bed on me 4 times since I bought it 15 years ago, 3 weeks ago is the most recent. Very disapointed with it. Probably just go back to a timex ironman, I'm tired of paying to get it fixed$$

My thoughts as well. I've got a couple of automatic watches I've had since the late 80s. Way too much, effort, work, expense. They are now retired.

I've got one quartz Bulova that is my nicer watch, several digitals, and a Citizen dive watch. The Bulova is actually a really tough watch. Built a fence wearing it. The wife only gave about $300 for it too. The Citizen dive watch I haven't had very long, but it's a solar powered "Eco-Drive" and seems to be very tough. Less than $200 on ebay. Some of the current Seikos look good too.

Today, there are some very fine watches for not very much money. And a heck of a lot less than I paid for the two that I don't wear anymore.

I have a Luminox Seal Dive Watch that has been a real trooper. It lasted through my enlistment as a 13B (Cannon Cocker), been through many concussions from HE, 2 Motorcycle Wrecks, and has not encountered any problems while I have been shooting big bores, or long range precision rifles in 338 Lapua and 50 BMG. I highly recommend them as an economic time piece (As compared to Patek Phillipe or such automatics).

I have a Luminox as well. It survived a pounding in Argentina where I probably shot 7,000 rounds in 9 days.

Bought a Luminox about one year ago. Never gave it any thought since then as it is always on my wrist when I shoot.
Works as good today as it did when I bought it.

My Omega Seamaster automatic has been on me for almost every shot I took in the last 11 years. Never had it serviced but I think it's time. The abuse it gets from me is worse than the big bores. In the pic of me in my avatar I took off my jewelry because I did not want to scratch up a 12 gauge royal paradox that was not mine lol.

That is pure horse----. A G-Shock? Give me a break? You don't seriously dive in a G-Shock?

I've known many special ops military personnel who used Luminox, and having used a Luminox during the most stressful of military training, I don't know one who wears a G-Shock if they have an alternative. (Maybe that has changed because of funds, but the technology is definitely not supportive of such a change).

Luminox is proven, and I've worn them since active duty in 1989-1990. Read up on the history of Luminox, and you'll find they have been the #1 choice of special ops across the board in US Military for the past 20 years.

The night lite capability and diver proof technology makes them perfect for all types of military ops.

The G-Shock doesn't approach the proven stature of the Luminox. However, the G-Shock does have alot more gadgets, if your a gadget kind of guy.

I have worn nothing but Lunimox since 1990. I will put them against any other watch to include Rolex, Omega, Breitling, and even the formiddable G-Shock.

I don't wear digitals.

My Rolexes, Glashutte, JLC Squadra, and Seikos have withstood thousands of rounds without a hiccup.

I shoot left-handed and wear my watch on the left hand.

Mdstewart, you obviously do not know any Seals! Do not believe the Luminox marketing hype. Google the subject. Luminox is a running joke. Suunto and G-shock are on the wrists of the vast majority of active duty Seals.

In Africa I wore a cheap $10 quartz watch and it worked just fine. Back at home though, my Orient Mako XL on a NATO strap sees the most wrist time (including trips to the shooting range). I figure all the shooting just helps keep the watch wound. Wink

I've worn a Titanium Luminox watch for twelve years nearly every day - including on numerous hunting and scuba diving trips.

All I've ever had to do is replace the battery. Once.

Great watch, and a real bargain, too.

Since it has been along time since I was active duty, and much has changed, I was shocked to find out from checking with a few friends still active that there is a trend with the SEALS towards the G-Shock and Suunto.

My real surprise was that the change was not due to lack of performance of the Luminox, but because the G-Shock has some kinda special significance in the RAP culture world and they are more affordable that the Luminox.

Luminox was definitely the preferred watch in special ops when I was active duty, however, most could not afford them, so casio's and timex's were worn by many.

I am shocked that the RAP culture has been able to tie itself to elite units such as the SEALS.

Don't believe the RAP culture motivation. G-Shock is preferred for several reasons. Accurate. Reliable. Offers functions such as timers often needed. Very discreet signature. No tritium, etc. to give an adversary a clear target through a scope. A SEAL would be as likely to wear a Rolex on active duty as he would to carry a nickel plated pistol. Peer pressure has for years pushed them for a G-Shock but Suunto is coming on for several reasons. Last year year I met with six active duty SEAL's. All six were sporting G-Shocks.

I bought my first Luminox - the SEAL watch II model - ten years ago, after spending too many nights in Leopard blinds without being able to tell how many hours had passed. It has been worn daily since then, has had a battery change once and is on it's third Luminox band. 5 african safaris, Canadian and New Zealand hunts and lots of big bore shooting without issue.

I bought a Titanium Luminox about 5 years ago to have something for dressier ocassions. My Rolex Submariner, Omega "moonwatch" and Seiko dive watch remain virtually unused over the past 10 years, in deference to the Luminox.

GeorgeS, you are lucky. I had a Rolex GMT ripped right off my arm in SE Asia so fast I never saw the guy except his back as he hopped on the back of a motorbike driven by his associate and tore off. MDStewart, BTW, SEAL's have no need for a "dive" watch. For underwater work they are issued a wrist dive computer. Check photos of SEALS in underwater gear and you'll see a dive computer on one wrist and a G-Shock on the other.

Ah bin wearin' a G-Shock for years and did not know I was so cool. Cool

The book Blackhawk Down chronicled it as the choice of The Brave, long before any rappers laid claim to it.

Please! Why would any Navy Seal or Delta Force member care about rapper bling? Roll Eyes

And really now, how many G's does shooting a sporting big bore rifle shock a watch with?
Not much.

Am a professed crank about accurate time. Wore a GMT Master for 20 years everyday everywhere for every job and it didn't miss a tick. But Rolex has a high maintenance cost so I switched to quartz for better accuracy and longer maintenance intervals. I have a Rolex quartz that I have also worn for about 20 years with absolutely impeccable performance. My favorite daily wear is a Bell & Ross Marine that is an excellant dive watch I understand. I hate water and take showers to stay out of a tub. Do not have any use for a dive watch but do shoot heavy recoil rifles and handguns and have never had a watch fail because of it. I decided to try a Citizen Eco-Drive and bought a Titanium Calibre 2100 which is water resistant to about 200 meters which is plenty for me. I have worn it for nearly a year now and it is off 28 seconds in that span of time. I like it very much although it is quite large. Have never seen a Luminox and had never heard of G-shock till this thread and I have collected wristwatches for well ove 30 years. I will admit most of my involvement has been slightly higher end Rolex,Omega,Bell & Ross, Baume Mercier, Brietling and that level. The only seals I have ever been close to have been the furry animal variety around the California coast. I think I knew a Ranger once while in the service but have a Rhodesian SAS guy and an ex-Selous Scout in Zimbabwe who are friends. We never discussed watches though.

I am a lover of fine watches but have never had my one. That's a lot of money and I'm not at that place yet. There are many I'd like to have but I figure for enduring value, service etc. my first will be the Rolex dive watch with gold and steel band, nothing fancy, but a good watch that can last me rest of my life. I plan to wear it everywhere for everything.

George,

That's the Submariner I have, as well. I bought it in St. Thomas circa 1988 because I was an active diver and thought it was the best looking watch Rolex ever made. I still feel that way about it, but wear the Luminox because of the tracer capability of reading it unassisted in the dark.

I have Rolex that I wear about 4 times a year if I want to look I can afford one but I wouldnt have the heart ot wear it shooting the 500.

I think I have broken 4 decent watches, so far. 2 Citizens, and 2 Wengers, one was a cheap one, the other was not.

I currently wear a Seiko, with a heavy woven band. I really like it, but I've only had it for a couple of years. I try to be careful with it, but it's already got light scratches in the crystal and a dink in the outer bezel.

I'm really hard on watches. More so than just banging them around, but I scratch the hell out of them. I'm outdoors most of the time, and work a pretty rough job. Lots of banging, reaching into tight spaces, crawling, brush, cactus, etc.

I'd love to have a "really nice" watch, like a Rolex or Luminox, as I like their looks and quality. I would just be to afraid to wear them. I'd hate to see what they looked like after 3 or 4 years of "me" on them.

George,

I love that Rolex. That's what a nice watch is supposed to look like. How often do you wear it, and how long have you had it? Do you ever wear it out in the rough stuff? I'm just afraid the only time mine would look that good, if I got one, was the moment I took it out of the box!

How stout is that watch band? I've broken several bands on my watches, which has lead to further damage as the watch goes flying.

How hard is it to keep from scratching it? Do you wrap something around it when you're out hunting? Yours looks perfect.

If I could keep one looking that good, I'd be a lot more excited about getting one.

Thanks, Slim.

I got that Sub in March 2001 (in St. Thomas, like Mike).

I wore it all day, every day for four years, until I bought my YachtMaster, when it went into a six-month on, six-month off rotation.

As I have added other timepieces, the rotation gets larger and the Sub gets worn one month every six or seven months.

The band is stout and comfortable. As a diver watch, it has the extension, so it can be worn over a wet suit.

I've been careful with it, but not to the point of forgetting that it is a watch, not a piece of bone china.

George

I've worn a Rolex in over 100 countries and on all seven continents. I have worked in some of the world's worst neighborhoods and never had a problem.

The great thing about a decent Rolex is its get-out-of-jail factor. You can almost always use one to bribe a cop in some third world shit hole if you need to, or it can be easily converted to cash for a bus or plane ticket out of Dodge. You can also trade one for a 9mm automatic or an AK, if the situation requires. A stainless Submariner would be my recommendation.

Casio G Shock was a required piece of equipment when I worked on a counter-narcotic task force (we all wanted to look identical/ uniform) They performed well and I have no complaints about them, but I would still prefer my Luminox. On the upper end of things I have had Chase Durer, as well as TAG Heuer watches that have proven themselves in the field as well. Older TAG watches were built as a professional dive watch, and mine still is an impressive piece of jewelry, I even shattered it in a Motorcycle wreck, and they fixed it/ repaired it for no charge. The turn around time was about two weeks, I would call that great customer service. I have looked at there new models, however, and remain unimpressed. So I will stick to my Luminox.
