I see on the AHR site that this is part of
what they do to improve the CZ rifles that
they offer; or to one sent in by it's owner.

So what does it mean please to "Fill the Bolt
Handle"?

Anybody have pic's of before and after?

Thanks guys. Smiler

The CZ has a hole in the end of the bolt knob.

It is filled in to make a round/smooth knob. To me it is purely a cosmetic modification.

As you can see the CZ comes with an unsightly hole. The AHR fix it to fill the unsightly hole with a fugly plug.

The real fix would be to cut off the handle and weld on a proper knob.

Nothing really distasteful enough to make me want to cut off the orig. integral manufactured bolt handle.
If the hole bothered me, I d get a good smith to turn/profile a plug to fit, weld and finish up to shape.

Tig filled bolt knob on a Brno, CZ. I suppose they hollow them out to reduce weight like the old M70 featherweights but IMO they would look better left alone.

Does anyone know why CZ puts the hole in the bolt. Surely it can't be to save an ounce or two given that big bores are not supposed to be lightweights.

I was told when they first started the 550's by a gunsmith that it was likely for manufacturing, he explained to me what they were probably doing to make them but it escapes me now. I know it isn't for cosmetics!!! Smiler

I seem to be a minority but I like the hole in the knob, at least on Winchesters.

A bolt knob needs a hole in it just as much as your head does.

Dumb and ugly thing, in my book.

Your bolt, or head, may differ. Big Grin

I had the hole filled on my 550 Safari American.

If it had been a simple hole drilled straight it probably would have been ok, but it is reamed at somewhere between 45 and 60 degrees which created a sharp edge which I found very uncomfortable.

The smith welded it up and reblued. The metal must not match exactly because color is off on the filled area but it is so much more comfortable that I do not worry about that.

I'm sure I won't own a CZ DGR, but if I was gonna fill one, I would consider filling with a real ivory plug. Especially if the little pc had some lines for character. Assuming one can find real ivory anymore. Nothing wrong with welding it up, just a thought.

I turned a small wooden dowel from a piece of wood I picked up in camp in Zimbabwe. Filled the hole with it and checkered it. Then I took a piece of warthog tusk and turned a small 1/8" dowel and placed it in center of the wood plug. Memento of Zimbabwe. Have this done to both my 375 602 and to my 416 Rigby 550. Simple ,not flashy and removable. Straightened both handles also as they had the small crook in them.

Should I drill it out so I can fill it? rotflmo

I always glue a big diamond in mine! Smiler but short of that a nice piece of walnut or Ebony looks nice, and its easy to do. I even did one in walnut and checkered it for a fellow and it looked really nice.
