5.3 pound Tromix 375 SOCOM bolt gun (pic)
I put this together over the weekend. It's a Howa 1500 Mini Action (.223 length), chambered in .375 SOCOM. It feeds from a single stack 4 round magazine, 20 inch barrel. Fires a 200gr bullet about 2500fps or a 235gr at about 2400.

The gun alone weighs in at 5.3 pounds. Loaded up with five rounds of ammo and the optic, it's 6.9 pounds.

If you're not familiar with the Howa action, they are very nice, smooth, and have a much better extractor design than either the Rem 700 or Savage.

Looks like a sweet 200 yard gun for most things.

Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!

That looks great! Sounds like an awesome woods rifle for deer and black bear.

Tony, does using the round in a bolt action allow you to raise the pressure above the 35K or so used by the socom in ARs? Or does the large pistol primer used by the case limit pressure?

ive got a 458 socom o the same 1500 action.... but have feeding issues... im told the action started out as a .243 to get the right boltface, but the removeable magazine creates feeding issues... it's got legacy bottom "metal" and removable mag... what magazine are you using???

Jimatcat,

If your gun started out as a .243 then you're using a short action, not the Mini action. The Mini is .223 length and is too short to handle a .243 case.

I hand-made that magazine from 16 gauge sheet stock.

Nice project! Can you post some details on what it took to do this? I haven't seen much info on these little actions. How did the bolt face work out with the extractor, etc? Is the barrel a standard thread?

Could an AR magazine be used with a custom bottom metal? That's the point of socom right?
