wasn't sure this as about "mere mortals" anyway

and actually the 505 gibbs case, with just a .550 expander in it, has FAR more than neck than a 470 mbogo...
finish the job, sirrah.. finish the job
jeffe
Jeffe,
If you insist:
I just like the .510 because I can get bullets for it from 570 grain to 800 grain, lots of cheap milsurp for the 50BMG mixed in there too, and some top target bullets in 705 grain and 750 grain, etc. Those pulled AP black tips are very accurate at mere pennies per shot.
500 A-Square/.510 Wells, that's the ticket. Recoil is not the issue, you are correct in that.
As for the shoulder issue above, you are dead wrong. Have you ever necked up a .505 Gibbs to .550? I haven't and I never will.
At the shoulder diameter, the .505 Gibbs is 0.600" since the body tapers down from 0.640" for nice feeding and extraction.
At the base of the neck the .505 Gibbs is 0.538" diameter.
Step at the shoulder = (0.600 - 0.538)/2 = 0.031"
Add another .040" to the bullet diameter and the shoulder step for a .550 Gibbs would be 0.011"

No way.
If you blew part of the body taper out it will still be too puny a shoulder for a .550 Gibbs, and would defeat the beauty of maintaining the same .505 Gibbs taper and headspacing.
Actually the .470 Mbogo has .035" step per side at the shoulder, so it is a little better than the .505 Gibbs shoulder.
So Jeffe, you are wrong. Your turn.

boom sticki second jeffeosso on the 550...there are going to be more manufacturers for the 550 solids per r.n.s. barnes being one
quote from r.n.s.
Barnes has a solid bullet designed and I should be working on finishing the details with them and test firing some shortly. Once that is done there will be 3 companies producing soilds.
RNS
so people will say to themselves..."self?"...""i need(

) to shoot me some 550 bullets to show of to them band of bubbas" and this will give them more selection and people love the 505 case. as far as marketing goes 375 to 550 sounds serious (not that you are not) but will raise a few eyebrows...let jeffeosso work on the soads and no skin off your nose (or shoulder) but hey...your the boss and i am the employee

call it the 550 p.h. put it on a m.r.c. p.h. action

boom stickjust read your last post...we were typing at the same time...if it wont work, it wont work but hire jeffeosso to design the cart for you and see if he can tweak it enough...no skin off your nose

RIPbs,
Have you been hitting the tembo lately?
Read the numbers I posted. Those are the facts. The .550 Gibbs is getting back into .400 Brown-Whelen tricks.
No way!
The .510/.505 Gibbs just barely makes it on shoulder for me.
That is the Max on the .505 Gibbs case. Why do you think Mr. Gibbs stopped at .505 with that case?
Latest marketing hype:
The .510 Tembo: the juice of the elephant that you stomped. A toast to Tembo with some tembo (palm wine).

boom sticko.k.boss...

i do like the way "510 tembo" rolls off the tongue

If you look closely through the bison hair, you can see the right horn of this little bison bull is sticking into the jugular of that taxidermy form for the Chihuahua deer.
I would love to come visit you and have a SMOKE with ya!!!
I have seen the infamous Chihuahua deer here in Tennessee, believe it or not, but it was more the size of a jackalope of the west. Never have I seen one with such a huge rack and body mass!!!!!
Interesting, there was a local sighting of the also infamous "Skunkman" and I have yet to see him personally.

If I do, I sure hope I am toting one of my Rigbys because anything else will have me undergunned and running in the opposite direction!!! Skunkman, for you laymen is a crossbred of Big Foot, but it is only found in the Appalachian Mountain chain. It tends to be more limber and quicker afoot than the Rocky Mountain variety, because of it's close contact with humans and Bluegrass music.

To date, nobody has harvested one, and I hope to be the first!!!

Bwana-beTera, thing is, most of the info you ask for is right there. If you read this whole thread RIP has said which rounds are on which case. They are all off the Rigby/Lapuamag or Gibbs case. You have about 50 posts, and at least half of them are asking what case a round is from. If you aren't willing to spend $20 on a book of wildcat cartridges, how are you ever going to afford a wildcat rifle?
Don't misunderstand, this is a very helpful bunch, and if a fellow asks for info on a case, he'll likely get it quick, but when all you're doing is asking for every dimension of a long list of rounds, it gets tiresome! Do some internet searching if nothing else!
