drewhenrytntCamomanJ Shoots the 600 OverKill
While killing time between bouts of waiting for pigs to reveal themselves to be shot I allowed a fellow member to shoot my Overkill. Our buddy Jeffeosso was there with video camera and hopefully he will post for your viewing pleasure. The load used was 900gr@2150.

That is a muzzle break! Without it J would likely have flipped

jeffeossoyeah, but he shoots his 30-06 like a pellet rifle .. and he hit the bullseye with the 600!

boom stickBaptism of recoil
A pretty thing
Hope you guys got some good hogs!
18 April 2011, 22:26
drewhenrytntI am not going to attempt to make excuses for hitting the edge of the plate and not the "bullseye". J had no preconcieved ideas about recoil generated by this cannon. I would be willing to put money where my mouth is. Let him shoot about 10 more rnds and then wait a few months and have him shoot again. I wasn't trying to hit anything other than make sure the bullet stayed in the sand pile, so yes I jerked the trigger.

By 30-06 Jeff means 375 H&H, of which CamomanJ has fired less than half a box, ever.

jeffeosso30-06, 375 .. both are great lady's rifles ..
1/2 a box .. off the bench! using use recoil reducers as ... nothing but the rifle...

CCMDocJust saw the video.
He was kidding, right? Those were pre-planned theatrics, I presume.

BitterrootThat's called the Overkill Shuffle. Pretty good for a skinny kid. Paul, you and I have more "ballast" in our keels to keep us upright.

okay .. sounds like a bet to me!

i've never seen anyone nail it that hard on their first shot with a big bore.. especially one with that trigger ...
load up 11 rounds ... give them to me .. i'll give jay 10 of them at a shoot, and we'll shoot all 10 over a couple hours ... and then the 11th one will be the same load ....
jay, andy set a bet -- you name the terms ...
heh --

RobgunbuilderGreat vid! Glad he had fun and those .600s are damn accurate! I have no doubts that with a little more trigger time he will do just fine. I let a nice lady shoot mine a few months ago and deceided to stand behind her to catch the gun if thingsbwent wrong. didn't need to and she proceeded to shoot 4 more rounds. Yes the 2150fps load is the training level. Things get much more interesting at 2350 and up.-Rob

drewhenrytntI wish I had the names of the guys at the range when I first touched off my OK. I got 4 rounds touching at 30yds and I had witnesses. After that I wasn't so great.

BigFiveJack I- For the 600 OK what is the recommended:
A. twist rate
B. barrel length
C. bullet company and grain weight
D. elephant, hippo, buffalo hunting velocity
II- From a rifle with a falling block can a 600
Nitro Express be loaded to the same pressure,
using the same twist, (in lieu of it's traditional
1:30) and hit the same velocity as the 600 OK?
Thank you.

Jack
OH GOD! {Seriously, we need the help.}
20 April 2011, 06:10
BitterrootBarrel twist 1:20
Length 16-1/4" to 26", whatever suits your fancy. I like 'em short , 20"
Bullets off-the-shelf, Woodleigh SN and FMJ , but there are lots of small companies and guys like Rob making bullets for the OK. 900 grain is standard. There are also some good moulds out there for cast bullets. We have a 1,000 grain FN cast.
Velocity 2,150 +/- for killing stuff.
Don't know about the falling block.

RobgunbuilderBigfivejack- twist is as bitterroot described. The original guns were three grooved, 26 inch length and bullets from 750 gr ( which I really like) through 900 grs. Lots of brass is available. I have a .600 NE Heym that can be loaded up. the ? 600 ok brass was designed from the beginning for a max pressure of 65kpsi. I have serious doubts about much of the available .600NE brass taking that pressure. remember the .600NE was designed for a 900 gr bullet at 2150fps and the .600ok for the same bullet weight but at 2400 fps. -Rob

jeffeossoRob - correction, and I know it was a slip .. 600 NE is loaded to 1850, ,average not the standard 2150 of the big bor NEs

Rob,
May I submit, using 28" proof bbl:
1850 FPS was the Jeffery load 100 grns Cordite,
the more common was 1950 FPS using 110 grns Cordite.

michael458I received CCMDocs 600 OK just before surgery a couple weeks ago! Was getting setup to do some very serious test work, but that is on hold right now a few weeks to allow for some healing! Tomorrow will be two weeks out of the six prescribed, by RIP and CCMDoc! Doc was shooting the 600NE over the weekend with the CEBs and doing very well, 1868 fps as I recall? Almost talked myself into getting started at these low velocities. But guess I better hold for a few weeks!

Have a series of work planned for it, I would like to do the bulk of the test work at 2100 or 2150 fps, good working velocity for anything. Then drop down to do some more in depth testing starting at 1850 or 1900 fps and dropping down even lower just to get an idea of what the bullets do at different velocities.
Just in a holding pattern right now!

Keep "holding" or do this instead ...

Yeah 1,868fps sounds about right (don't have my "cheat sheets" in front of me). Started low and will be working up towards the 2,000fps range.

RobgunbuilderJust shows how much attention I pay to the .600NE and maybe why the Heym kicks so much. I just use the STD 900 gr at 2150 load I use in the .600ok with it. As I remember now the tropical load was the 1850fps one and the 1950 fps one was the STD load. I'd consider a 1850fps load to be a squib.-Rob

PhatmanLooks like you had really better have your shit together to shoot a 600OK 3 rounds rapid fire and hit any target.
I think I would have to spend a few months training with the gun to do it.
If ever...lol

Not me, I've found my recoil limit and it's spelled 500 Jeffery. I don't need any more ... I'm just a wuss

Hi chuck375,
I'd submit for your approval that with a certain overall
weight of the rifle, plus stock carved to your own fit,
plus practicing just the right technique, plus the indiv-
idual interest in doing a given challenging thing, (like
firing a big recoiling rifle) and a man can make it hap-
pen alot more than one might think...

RobgunbuilderPlease remember, these are stopping rifles, made to be used at 25 yards or less. In a charge you'll be hard pressed to get off one round accurately and it had better end all discussions. Thats the sole purpose of these guns ! If you have time for three shots your either not close enough or using the wrong tool for the job. Can it be done, absolutely, but why?-Rob
