Yesterday afternoon, I bailed form work early, and on the way home decided to take a look at a cutblock. I turned off the highwway, drive 5 minutes, then disembarked. I was going to hike up and around the back of the cutblock to see if a deer would come out before dark.

As I had stayed in a hotel the night before (wedding) I didn't have much wiht me. I had my 375 Ruger Alaskan, 3 rounds of ammo, my binoculars and not much more.

I started trudging up the old road, and had gone about 15 minutes when I noticed a bear 100 yards away. And it was UPHILL from the road!!Smiler

A quick glance showed that it was decent, and had very nice fur. Proabbly taste good, too. So I started a sneak, keeping low and using the undulating road to get close. At 30 yards I was crawling up and gettign ready for a final assesment through the scope, wait for a good shot.

At that point he busted me, looked straight at me, while on all fours...It was now or never, so I shot him in the chest.

The 260gr Accubond hammered him hard, he went downin a twitching pile....

Didn't even have my camera wiht me, but he was in a good spot. I ran down, got my truck, backed up right under him, put it in 4x4 and scrunched the rear of the truck into the side of the hill...Mr Bear rolled right inSmiler

Took him home, roplled him out snapped some pics and started skinning.

Mr Bear:

If you look on the rigth side, you will see where the bullet ended up- under the skin, after penetrating about 48" of bear..

Recovered bullet - 196.1gr

So the .375 Ruger in a 20" barrel works at least as well as a .375 H&H in a 24" barrel. Surprise ... NOT!

Good show, and a blessed Joe to have his hunting so handy.
Thanks for sharing. thumb

Gatehouse, way to go!

How much do you figure the bear weighed?

I see that you were using your noggin, to get that bear loaded by yourself. thumb

Well, I could make u all sorts of tales about "400 PLus" pounds...they all seem to be 400 -plus... Smiler

But realisticaly, probably no more than 300.

If he hadn't collapsed at the shot, and ran downhill, I wouldnt' have got him loaded in one piece, that is for sure! Smiler

The bear was about 6 ft long. Didn't square it or even take serious measurements...

The 375 Gatehouse Improved (375 GIMP) is easily formed by seating bullets while using a FL sizing die. Big Grin

The 260 Accubond is chronoed at 2755fps.

Nice bear. Impressive bullet performance. I might have to consider the Ruger over the H&H.

I always hear these stories of guys walking up on great game by chance... I'm still waiting on my good luck hunting story Frowner

I guess I'll be due eventually according to the law of diminishing probabilities.

Great bear and great story. I'm envious from head to toe. thumb

Really nice bear and good bullet performance...

How many grams of whiskey does it take to improve your bullet seating procedures? Nice job and a 90degree neck is the latest thing you know! salute

You may have taken the title of "first confirmed kill with 375 Ruger in Canada", but I'll try hard not to let you down buddy!! I'll do my best to lay the smackdown on something, even if its just a little whitey...if I don't connect with a big bull elk tomorrow that is! thumb

Cheers beer,
Chris

First kill with a 375 GIMP! Maybe you should do a 75 degree shoulder and record the first kill with a 375 PIMP (partially improved)

I think I may in fact be the first confirmed kill by a Canadian in Canada with the 375 Ruger...Which makes me extra KOOL..Smiler

But I really want you to smoke an elk with it. Or a deer...But an elk would be perfect...Please get on it...

I may even take the 375 to Vanderhoof in January, on my annual coyote pilgrimage with Bartelll. Big Grin

Never had the time to do any load development yet, so I am just using the factory stuff for the time being. I have some TSX's and GSC HV's ready to try...but your AB sure looks good. I am also thinking of the 270 A-frame.

Sadly, no elk will fall to my MIGHTY African Elk rifle this year....season ended, Elk 15 to Canuck 0 (or thereabouts...it was a blow-out anyway). I did come close at the end though! I know you don't want to hear any fluffy feel-good hunting stories, but the last day of the season was one of the best...I was within 7 steps of a feeding 4 pt raghorn for about 15 mins while 2 other raghorns (a 4pt and a 3pt) fed by me only a couple steps further away (!!!), and an hour later a nice 5 pt walked up within 11 paces of me, while I laid prone with my scope on him, trying to grow a 6th sticker somewhere on his rack. Was very cool.

But cool don't cut it, eh! So deer it will have to be.

Cheers,
Canuck

That is cool!
Reminds me of this time, across the dam at Hudson's Hope, I had a spiker mulie (good meat deer but not open at the time) walk down to me. While staying perfectly still it never paid attention to me. Then I got up and it looked at me like I betrayed it! Priceless!!
