I Am new here, my first post. Sorry if I ask something that have been asked 10000 times I am a great fan of the old 9.3x62. It is the round I am hunting moose here in Norway and Sweeden with, have been my hunting caliber in the US and also on my first and only Safari to SA. But, I am planning a next safari, now with Cape on the list. So, I also like a caliber that is a bit larger, more power for that game. But, what to go for? The .404 Jeffery? 425 WR? A 450 or ? I like the WR round, but, yes, the rebate rim is not loved around. But, it was and is a good caliber. Just have to have the gun made by one who knows what he is doing. I guess. Hope some can help me. But, a 50 cal. is to much for me. Have been shooting a lot with a 375 HH and some with a 458 Win mag. Have a good weekend and sunday Happy hunting.

Yes, The 425 is a great Calibre but the 404 is more practical.

Thank you. CanI ask why? More and better bullets? Better Brass? You know the 425? Happy hunting.

As much as I like 375 H&H and 458 Lott. With advancements in bullet designs like CEB BBW#13s there are no flies on the tried and true 458 Winmag! It would be a great place to start. Even the Lott would not be bad! We Band of Bubbas N.R.A Life Member TDR Cummins Power All The Way Certified member of the Whompers Club

Hello and thank you for the information. Stupid question, but what is CEB BBW#13? (A bullet type, I guess...) Thank you for the tip. Also one + for the 45 caliber I guess is the large number of bullets. How is the 458 Lott in recoil? All the best. Happy hunting.

Yes I have used a 425 on big game like Elephant, Lion and Hyena but bullet cases can be hard to come by and quite expensive. However if you find a nice well feeding 425 and don't mind the price of the cases then it's not really a problem.

You could always just use your 9.3x62. I have always found it great on Buffalo.

Hello Ozhunter. Thank you for the information. Yes, the 9.3x62 is ok.. But, I want a new gun , so to use the bufalo as an exuse is ok I guess..Hehe. What bullets did you use in your 425? You have an original WR rifle? Happy hunting.

That would be Cutting Edge Bulets and the particular style/pattern is the BBW#13. You'd have to ask Michael458 what BBW#13 stands for. I like to think it is Big Buffalo Whomper, but I don't think that is correct. I know it is a long read. You will not be able to do it in one sitting, but the Cutting Edge Bullet development is detailed in Terminal Bullet Performance--the 1st topic for the Big Bore forum. It is a revolutionary design. I bet Michael458 has some great real world experience of what would be a good 1st big bore. He doesn't bite either. Helluva nice guy. One of the .416's seems a logical next step up -- if not a .404 Jeff. The Rigby is more nostalgic, I chose the Remington because ammunition is much cheaper -- ballistics are virtually identical.

If I were going for DG with my first big bore I would go with something that has manageable recoil but will still hit like a sledgehammer. I would say go with either 475B&M or the Lott. Kinda depends on what gun you are building it on and what else you intend to hunt with it. If you are looking at a bolt rifle I would go with the 404 Jeffery. A 40cal 400gr bullet at 2100 to 2200fps is plenty good enough for cape buff, elephant and lion, as I proved to myself with my 450/400 double. You can use 400gr bullets in Africa and just for fun 300 or 350gr bullets for your big game and boar in Norway, and Sweden. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Hello and thank for all the feed back. I will ask Michael458. But, I am not sure that a 475 B&M will be something I can controll, maybe the 475 B&M super short. Maybe. But, a 404, 425 or a 416 is maybe more in my range, keeping recoil in mind. The gun will be a bolt action gun, hope to have it made on a M98 action. NE 450 No2, oh wish I had a double like you talk about. Maybe one day. Happy hunting.

Thank you for the good information. I se that the 458 Win. Mag is also not much more than a 404. But, I have heard sooooo much bad about the 458 Win.Mag. Sad, brass is at a lowwer price and lots of bullets. Hmm, no I think it will be a .404 Jeffery on me. Happy hunting.

All the bad you've heard about the 458 WinMag was from the very early days with the factory ball powder and 510gr bullet loadings - problems with the ball powder after many years of nonuse. Today this is not an issue and the cartridge has reached its potential with the 450gr bullet loadings... Jim "Life's hard; it's harder if you're stupid" John Wayne

Just a thought, a CZ with a kevlar stock,in .416 Rigby, be fairly easy to find brass and bullets. Mounted up with a scope, you,re up to about 11 pounds of gun. Starting load with 300 grain bullets, only doin 2285 fps, be 38 lbs of recoil. I,ve got a relatively light 9.3x62, with slightly warm loads you,re at at 38-40 lbs of recoil. That would have the 416 picking up where the 9.3 leaves off, in terms of recoil, go up considerably from there with heavier loads. Looking at 400 grain bullets, seems like you,ve got a little more of a cushion if you want higher velocities with the Rigby, as opposed to the .416 Rem, or the .404.. Again, just a thought. If the .404 Jeffery is the one talkin to you, might as well get the gun you want...
