Well I have been bitten by the .500 Jeffery bug, and I just gotta have one, what is the best way to get ahold of the CZ Custom shop?

I'd only like to hear from people who have been through the process.

Thanks in advance

thors460,
He doesn't want to hear from you, or me! Wink
But ... there is one sitting in the rack at

www.whittakerguns.com

I made up four dummies of Bertram brass and 2 Barnes TSX and 1 old Barnes RN solid and a GSC FN solid.

It fed three of the dummies very well and ejected just fine. Jambed on the feed with the FN.

I was flabbergasted it worked that well with that rebated rim and a magazine box that has identical inside width and the same ribs as the .375 H&H box.

They use the same box for everything, including .505 Gibbs.

They tweak the rails and feed ramp ... but that 500 Jeffery I saw did not have any shiney-bright polish on the feed ramp.
It had the same matte black finish on the ramp as on the exterior of the gun. Confused

Just polishing the feed ramp and dishing it out a bit more might make it feed that FN.

Sumbuddy please buy it before I do! Wink

Tip Burns in Canyon Lake TX. made a 500 Jeffery for the HSC. And you could always consider this Big Dog from Empire Rifles.

That is the only one that has ever been in Whittakers. Still there. I have to go lie down and wait for the urge to go away every time I see it.

FWIW. I prefer the 505 gibbs magnum length ctg in the CZ magnum length action. The Jeffery is a short OAL case, short neck, rebated rim ctg design with those compromise features for a standard length action. Since the CZ is full magnum length you can use the full gibbs. the Gibbs is a no compromise design and looks better (IMHO). It is potentially easier feeding and better looking case with a little extra capacity should you want to go there. CZ has had feeding issue across the baord. You may end up a AHR for a tuneup. So why add to your risk with a ctg that has a reputation for feeding issues. Seems a waste of a big action.

HogLeg458,

I also ordered a .500 Jeffery from CZ's custom shop. I had to send it back twice, once because it needed to be throated properly and again because they could not get it to feed properly. I was more than a little disappointed at the problems. It still would not feed after sending it back a second time. I did like the feel and balance of the CZ, but when you are paying that kind of money for a DG rifle you at least expect it to feed. My rifle might have been an isolated case but it sure put a bad taste in my mouth about the situation. To CZ's credit they did refund my money and I promptly ordered one from American Hunting Rifles. This rifle feeds and shoots great. A decision I don't regret as Wayne built me a sweet rifle.

After hearing the testimony, I think I will pass on the .500 Jeffery, sure it might have the "NEATO!" appeal, but it just seems like such a pain in the rear to get up to DGR standards.

I think I will do a .450 Rigby instead, I already have an abundance of .458 bullets laying around, and surely it can't be any worse to work with than the .416 Rigby!

HogLeg458,

I have one in 450 Dakota, about the same as the Rigby; but, brass is available from Dakota (made by Jamison). I took mine to Zimbabwe last December and hunted Cape Buffalo with it. It feeds flawlessly, and a 500gr bullet at 2370 did the job very nicely.

HogLeg,
You might consider a 404 Jeffery rifle. Hornady making ammo and brass and bullets.

You can load it up you can load it down.

The other reason for getting the 505 Gibbs is to be able to stand on a bench infront of a large crowd and drop a dummy 470 Capstick round from the muzzle all the way through the action!
Impressive to say the least.

That and watching that thing try to jump out of Rich's hand every time he fired it! Eeker

I should have mentioned I do have a 505 gibbs from CZ in kansas city and the gun has worked out very well. The ONLY issue was a-square ammo. Feeds ok for me and the 505 in 600 gr loading is a real step up from the 458/500 class gun. When i got mine, it was sitting on the shelf, ready to go, one week later - gun in hand.

Procedure = pay deposit at local gun shop and wait one week.

I do too and it shoots and feeds flawlessly as well.

For what it's worth, I disagree with Fourbore. I think the CZ is a poor choice for the .505 Gibbs because it does not have enough bolt diameter to accommodate such a large cartridge. In a CZ the .500 Jeffery is the better choice. If you are going to build a .505, the better choice right now is a Granite Mountain Action or the new Montana Rifle Company PH action if we ever see them.

If you are interested in a CZ, contact Jason Morton (jason@cz-usa.com). He will hook you up. Better yet, just call Wayne at AHR and he will hook you up with something really special.

Thanks Rusty, for bringing that one up again!!

It was my 550 Gibbs, and I noticed you didn't line up to try any of those 615gr @2550fps loads!

I'm not sure I will ever live that down, but at least I shoot the thing.

I agree the .500 Rimless whether .500 Jeffery, .500 Schuler Jumbo, 12.5x70 Schuler (.500), or 12.7x70 Schuler(.510) is THE ULTIMATE DGR!!!! More case capacity than any blown out case thus lower operating pressure. Excellent with modern powder and feeds slick and reliable.

The best of the best!!!!!!

The .500 Rimless is MOA because of its ability to handle modern powder.

Of course the best "500 Rimless" would be the 500 Mbogo.
Rigby-sized case head with no rebate to the rim.
Case capacity of 150-plus grains of water.
35-degree-and-20-thou-per-side shoulder.
Caliber-length neck.
3.000" max brass length.
3.750" COL.
Fits a Rigby box on a Magnum Mauser, with no special tricks, easy to feed.
Reamer available from Dave Manson.
Deluxe 3-Die set available from Redding.
Brass available from Quality Cartridge, made from Hornady basic.

The 500 Mbogo was created to correct the deficiencies of the 500 Jeffery and 500 Schuler.

500 Mbogo gives up only 10 grains of case capacity versus the 500 Jeffery,
so pressures will be insignificantly higher with the 500 Mbogo versus the 500 Jeffery,
but it will be much easier to get 4-down in the box and feed reliably with the 500 Mbogo.
Lesser bolt thrust at any given pressure too, if case head diameter is considered.
Also, it fits a .700" bolt face without the skeletonization required by the 505 Gibbs.

You can get 2500 fps with 600-grainers using any of the "500 Rimless" above.
However, the 500 Mbogo does it most efficiently, safely, and reliably.

Just my opinion. Wink

Hi Rip, any chance Rigby will make "an honest cartridge" of the two Mbogo's by making 470 and 500 Rigbys? I know it really doesn't matter for most of us who handload ...

The "Dos Mbogos" are honest wildcats already.
I would rather see an honestly improved .416 Rigby.
Just changing the .416 Rigby shoulder to 20 degrees instead of 45 degrees would make it an honestly flawless cartridge, with bigger case capacity to boot.
I would call that the ".416 Rigby Improved Perfectly." Wink
