Gunsmith from swedenDo You have a 470NE or equal?
Hello
I am thinking to build a .470NE double gun. But now am not sure what to build from (donorgun). I have recent bulit a 45-70 from a Merkel 8 kal 20, and planning to sleeve in the new barrels.
So I am interested to know more about Yours .470 (and simular)and from what they are built.
Thanks, Andréas

dgr416I just shot a friends 470 capstick a few weeks back.It is a 416 remington or 458 lott straight out to .470 caliber. It was in a model 70 Winchester stainless rifle. Its an awesome gun.Its cheaper to shoot than the 470 NE if you reload and form the brass. It kicked pretty good.He had 500 gr loads at 2400fps and 600 gr loads at 2350 fps.Its about as big of a cratridge as you can get into the model 70 and still have a repeating rifle.I would like to have model 70 stainless in a 470 capstick but would have a very good muzzle break on it.He had only shot it about 40 times or so.winchester did make a few factory rifles in this caliber.Iyts alot less to build and shoot one of these than buying and shooting a 470 NE double.

boom stickCan you make the 45-70 double a 45-120 or a 450 n.e.? I would go longer to get bigger. Just a thought.
Good luck.

Gunsmith from swedenI am worried that my, Merkel 8 kal 20, doner-gun dont handle the stress of bigger, but i can be wrong. Please let me know!?

boom stickI do not know if it can take it but you could do another one on a stronger platform and use the same bullets.
the 45-120 would be so cool.

My Merkel looks just like the sauer in the pic. They are made in the same town in Germany. But I dont nesseserily need to build on that gun.
Question to Jeffeosso; how is the 45-120 in pressure? Compare to other big bore?

tomo577butch searcy's second go at building double rifles used browning side x side shotguns. they were plenty solid and used modern materials. i had a 470 - think it was built on a 12 ga frame and it was a shooter.
why not contact butch and see what he'll tell you ?
