Brad aka Pill ShooterBig Bore Shooting on the Cheap?

To the Group:
I'm looking at building a big bore larger than 458. Any idea's on cost per shot for factory power level reloads? (includes brass bullets powder, primer)
ie 470 Capstick, 470 Mbogo, 505 Gibbs, 510 Wells???
Thanks Brad

UglystickGo to
www.midwayusa.comThey have a great supply of reloading stuff.
Off the top of my head I think you are looking at at least $2 per round

CanuckI predict the cheapest one on your list will be the Capstick, but I don't have any numbers for you.
Here is what my 470 Mbogo costs me:
Brass approximately $3.00 each. Assume 10 loadings per case (which has not been a problem and is probably a conservative average), so $0.30 each.
Bullet. The easiest for me to get is the Barnes XLC. Approx $35 on avg for 20. So, lets round that to $1.50 per shot. You can do better than this from Midway for sure.
Powder. 110gr per round, 7000gr in a pound, each pound costing about $35. So, rounding again, say $0.50 per shot.
Primer. About $5 for 100. $0.05 each.
Total per round = $2.35
Give or take.
Cheers,
Canuck

DPhillipsShooting on the cheap, if you keep velocities appropriate, I'd shoot hardcast.
http://www.beartoothbullets.com/bulletselect/index.htmThe Beartooth bullets are very nice, accurate and affordable.

CanuckDPhillips,
Good point, for cheap plinking at the range...substituting the 420gr cast 475 Linebaugh bullet at $0.30 apiece for my Barnes XLC load above, the sum total per round drops to $1.15.
I am not sure if you can push it to "factory" type velocities like Brad asked though.
I have gotten some 500gr cast bullets from Dave E., which he paper patches and we push them to over 2400fps. I am not sure what his cost is on those, but probably in the ballpark of the Beartooth bullets.
Cheers,
Canuck

jeffeossoassuming dies are a wash in cost, as well as the gunsmithing to get there.

I paid 4.95 per box (4.95) the last time I bought some... but they aren't showing a listing now.
larger than a .458?
the next cheapest is the .510 bore.. either wells or A2... cast bullets are about 40¢ with the increase in price of lead...
so, 40¢ for the bullet, 40¢ for the powder, 2¢ for the primer, and 20¢ ($2/10) brass
$1.02 per shot.. and this goes down if you use surplus powder
the .475 bullets (470 bore) have the only "cheap plinking" bullet, the speer 400gr Golddot, about 25¢ each
if you don't mind the headstamp not matching (today.. this will change) the 470 AR ... brass is 58¢ new, list.. so 10 firings is 5.8¢ a bang...
30¢ comerical powder (i generally use surplus)
25¢ bullet (cheaper than CAST.. really)
2¢ primer
6¢ case
63¢ to shoot
but, in terms of
POWER the steps are, at
nominal loadings, over the 458 lott
458 AR
470 capstick
470 AR (the case is larger in volume)
500NE
505 gibbs
500 jeffe
577NE
460 Weatehrby
470 mbogo
500a2/510wells
550 express
585nyati
550 magnum
577 trex
600OK

I WISH!
Check out this excerpt from the catalogue of one of our big outdoor goods wholesalers in Canada...
Add tax to that and you are pushing $35!

Hey, I agree with your ranking of "power", my friend.

GrandpasezAnd then 12ga FH--70 cents for hardened
730 gr slug.25 cents primer.40 cents
surplus powder, cases 1.35 ea to be
bought and rimmed, last forever. This combo
over 10,000 ft lbs, $1.55 a shot.Using
faster powder, 14,000 ft lbs, add 40 cents
more for powder. The fun per penny quotient
can't be beat.Ed

Paolo9,5x73Those calibers are expensive to shoot.

You can reduce cost to <1USD/round by using .375 H&H 300gr SP PMP factory loads. You don't even have to get your hands dirty.

Paolo9,5x73You forgot to add your time to the price of each round loaded! Isn't time money to Yanks?

not when I am trying to sell that reloading is cheaper than buying factory to my wife!!
time's a wash ... you are going to the range for "entertainment".. book the time cost as an offset on the fun of shooting... !!!

Paolo9,5x73Don't worry, I understand PPU of Serbia is going provide a viable alternative soon.

Unfortunately not in calibers listed by original poster.
