the rugers are pretty easy to do! and McGowen can do a reasonable job on the 500AR in a ruger!
11 January 2009, 01:51
jeffeossoi held a 416 ruger case next to a 416 ar... LMFAO, other than base diameter, they are twins .. shortnet and all... now THATS awesome.. parallel developements, in no way did they share breeding, but the simularities are awesome...
hornady was very nice to me and gave me a goodly amount of DGS .474s to try and do load dev with. Guys, it looks like a perfect bullet, and the DGX aint bad... they are the same length, and for dangerous game distances, are designed to fly to nearly the same load and POI..
we shall see
11 January 2009, 01:58
boom stickWill the 416 AR clean up a 416 Ruger???
11 January 2009, 02:10
jeffeossoshould.. its larger everywhere except neck diameter, b ut you'd have to measure.. no reason to go with the AR over the ruger, though.. no real difference

475Ruger jeffe? I baited Lonnie by suggesting they need a flagship but prefer the 458AccRel.
Cheers...

jeffeossoI'd got with that... though the 458 AR is a more "marketable" shoulder/headspace than either the 458 ruger or 470 AR ..
475 Ruger (based off RUM, not Ruger brass) would work, ya'll, I am telling you! That is, we can rebrand the Ar
Now, on to headstamped brass!

jeffeossoI have 5 sets of 500 AR dies available, but the pricing varies, and of course, will need shipping. These have the GREAT expanders, and I will send the "catch ups" to the guys with them.
For "off the street" the dies are $150
For AR members, $125
For those that donated to the original AR reamers (THANK YOU) $100 shipped
I should receive the expanders in the next couple days.

FOOBARJeffe...
What is the case capacity of your 500AR?
I went through 16 pages of fluff trying to find some reference...maybe I missed it. Buliwyf got me thinking...again...of doing another barrel for my SMLE. I could only come close using a 500 Van Horn Express case at about 129 gr H2O. Early on in my SMLE project I was considering doing something with the Van Horn or RUM case, along with several other rimmed and rimless cases, but your AR series had more positive qualities and availibility factors...so I pushed that project thought aside and finished the 458 WM project, then the NEF 12GAFH project got me wired up and my mind went south...

...the 500 AR should have just a bit less capacity...???
The Rigby case was a shoo-in for a single stacker in the standard 308 W mag, with no wedging problems like the RUM caused, but I was too cheap at the time to go with a .510 cal and all the custom work required for dies, reamers etc...but now that Pac-Nor has a reamer and is just over the hill from me, some of the "customization" costs have been eliminated.
I have a mag length minimum of 3.0", but if a Ruger SA was used as a basis then I won't have any problems...just will lose a bit of capacity which isn't a major redazz as I also have a pressure limitation of 45KCUP in the SMLE 2A action.
I also have a loose Rem LA receiver, Savage and Ruger actions or other push feed rifles I could do a swap barrels for, but want a controlled roung feed receiver and don't want to muck up the feed rails, so I might see if I can talk my favorite 'smith out of one of his mag mauser loose actions...not likely...
Thanks
Luck on your projects.

jeffeossoSure--
about 125-127 gr, depending on norma or hornady brass..
570gr pills at 2150 are small recoil.. but, the bolt thrust going up with the rigby case
14 February 2009, 07:59
jeffeossoHornady sent my dies to heat treat for the full set of the 40's.
QualCart is sending the first of the 458 and 500 AccRel brass to me on monday

13 March 2009, 02:42
jeffeosso<okay, so pretend I didn't send my 458 AR dies to Oz - it's a POORLY marked 45LC box, to look like a 458 AR>
Hornady making 416, 458, and 470 dies, Commerically available 500 AR dies, Headstamped brass....
WOW, I am feeling pretty accomplished on these

Hmmm...
A standard action no belt 600...
That would be a heavily rebated 600 nitro case with 10 thou taper and 20 thou shoulders. Kinda like a 600 version of the 585 Nyati.
The 500 AR has about 20 thou shoulders...
It would look like this but a tad fatter.
.695" casehead diameter
.685" shoulder diameter
.645" neck diameter
.640" Rim Diameter
Single stack in what action?
13 March 2009, 03:45
Rodney H.{500Jeffery}"PH" on the way.

.
Rodney.
13 March 2009, 04:32
Rodney H.{500Jeffery}How about shortening the trex case to 2.85", taking a few thou from the taper, and necking up to .620"

Rodney.
13 March 2009, 05:15
boom stickThe TRex is pretty much a rimmed unrebated 600 case...
The 600 Rodney PH...
The issue would be getting Trex brass.
Do a long neck and you can keep it 3"
It would be like the 606 Mammoth but a true .620" 600 caliber and not the .599" like the Mammoth.

Rodney H.{500Jeffery}The A-Square web site still offers loaded ammo and brass for handloading, don't know how availlable it is. Midway has it on there inventory list, but shows out of stock and no back order. Still looking. Rodney.
13 March 2009, 05:53
jeffeossono improvement over the 600 OK, i reckon, as the ok IS a 600 NE.. shorten that to fit in a PH
13 March 2009, 05:59
Rodney H.{500Jeffery}Just messin 'round, but you never know with this bunch
