I'm looking for recommendations on what kind of red dot to put on my 404 Jeffery. I'd prefer something with a quick detach base. Aimpoint and Trijicon seem to be readily available in Canada. Unfortunately, that's where I live...

Both of those are probably the most durable mil-spec type mini dots out there. I got an RMR on a 500 NE and a leupold delta point pro on a 505. It matters about the mount and type as well i uses the AHR delta point mount for a CZ550 and the trijicon mount rib mount on a merkel. The swarovski 1-6 zxi illuminated scopes work great as a red dot as well with illumination have several of those if you can find the ee ones perfect for a big bore that might reach out a bit. Not to mention the light gathering of the scope is great too but for short range stopper low profile optic hard to beat a mini red dot White Mountains Arizona

If you want it for dangerous game, I wouldn't trust anything needing a battery. If it doesn't go flat unexpectedly, the electrics may let you down. At least the Swaro Z6 has a reticle - but if you get too used to the light you might still panic if it goes out. If you don't believe that, think about why self-loaders have rarely been trusted against dg. In truth they should be more reliable (not subject to African shortstroke) and quicker to recycle if they do misfire; however, the worry about shock to the shooter's psyche is another matter.

Self-Loaders are illegal in most DG countries for hunting purposes. Back to the original question, Aimpoint ACRO would be my choice. Change the battery every year on your birthday. Quick detach mount.
