I'm looking for recommendations on what kind of red dot to put on my 404 Jeffery. I'd prefer something with a quick detach base. Aimpoint and Trijicon seem to be readily available in Canada. Unfortunately, that's where I live...

Both of those are probably the most durable mil-spec type mini dots out there. I got an RMR on a 500 NE and a leupold delta point pro on a 505. It matters about the mount and type as well i uses the AHR delta point mount for a CZ550 and the trijicon mount rib mount on a merkel. The swarovski 1-6 zxi illuminated scopes work great as a red dot as well with illumination have several of those if you can find the ee ones perfect for a big bore that might reach out a bit. Not to mention the light gathering of the scope is great too but for short range stopper low profile optic hard to beat a mini red dot White Mountains Arizona

If you want it for dangerous game, I wouldn't trust anything needing a battery. If it doesn't go flat unexpectedly, the electrics may still let you down. At least the Swaro Z6 has a reticle - but if you get too used to the light you might still panic if it goes out. If you don't believe that, think about why self-loaders have rarely been trusted against dg. In truth they should be more reliable (not subject to African shortstroke) and quicker to recycle if they do misfire; however, the worry about shock to the shooter's psyche is another matter.

Self-Loaders are illegal in most DG countries for hunting purposes. Back to the original question, Aimpoint ACRO would be my choice. Change the battery every year on your birthday. Quick detach mount.

I was aware of that, md375 but was trying to keep the parentheses to a minimum. Changing the battery every year is doubtless good policy but electrics can still go bad. Though Leupold guarantee their scopes for life, last time I looked they would only cover illumination for a year or two.

I use a Holosun green dot sight for cape buffalo and like it. Holosun sights are used in gun fights they are reliable. IHMSA BC Provincial Champion and Perfect 40 Score, Unlimited Category, AAA Class.

I'll second Ray's Post, though I prefer a 3/32 Silver Bead filed at a 45* angle for me it seems to pick up ambient light better than Ivory ...

I have a Trijicon RMR in the AHR quick release mount on my CZ 416 Rigby. It's a huge improvement over iron sights, especially for my aging eyes, I've used the RMRs on several dangerous game rifles and hunts and will be doing so again in a few weeks on my 470 DR. The batteries last years ... YEARS!!! That said, I do replace them before a hunt if they are over a year old. Does changing the battery mean sighting in again? Most of the time yes, but it's usually a matter of moving the dot a couple of inches. In other words, changing the battery has never resulted in POI being off target and having to start over. And if for any reason the dot fails, with the AHR mount, it's a simple twist of the lever and I'm on irons. With the JJ mounts that we typically see on doubles, it's a simple twist with a coin or base of a shell case and you're back to irons. With either of the mount systems I have, removing the dot and going to irons is about 5 to 10 seconds max. What's not to like?
