Looking for a source of cheap bullets to use in my Lott for practice.
Any ideas?

You'll have to look carefully - it seems there is a run on Hornady & Remington bullets in 458.

That being said, I had a few boxes of Speer 400gr FN jacketed that I loaded for my Lott. They shot very well.

Snowwolfe, try the link I am posting. I have no experience with these in my 458's, but they sure as hell are cheap. $112.99 for 500 405gr bullets. Miday is out of stock but I imagine a little leg work could round some up

If you go with cast, check the diameter they were sized to before you buy. My rifles tend to tumble the bullets sized below .459.

But Midway customer service sucks as they will not ship to Alaska using the USPS flat rate boxes.
Who has the cheapest prices on the Hornady 500's?

With their reasonable shipping, Grafs is often a most reasonable place to buy bullets. For Hornady .458 bullets see:

Rick Rose tells me that bullets made with this mould:

from wheel weights, sized to .459, and lubed with Carnuba Red have the same impact point as the Hornady 500 gr DG bullet from his .458 Lott.

Lots of places offering 405 cast, just have to run a search...I been working up loads in my 45-100...basically a Lott...Oregon Trails 430 gr GC Trueshot are excellent...best weight range I've found so far and highest accuracy around 2350-2400 f/s...plus/minus 2 gr on the weight...O.T. also has cheaper 300, 350 and 405 cast...63/250, $116/500, don't know about shipping.

I dunno Jay -- perhaps its training .. one doesn't launch into a 26 mile run to do a marathon, or decide to free weight bench press 400 lbs on the first week!

Snowolfe didn't say he was a rookie who couldn't cut a full power load...he said practice which to me means refining a skill. So if you're venture is to refine in preparation for...?? Use the equipment, loads, etc you'll be using in the field. F-15 pilots don't train in Cessna's, M1A1 crews don't train in a Brinks truck either...

f15 pilots actually DO train on cessnas, the T-37

Took the Lott deer hunting yesterday with that bullet. No deer, nothing moving. There was a 2" lichen on a large boulder about a hundred yards away from where I was sitting, now there's a crater

Always carry ear protection when hunting with cheap bullets.

My take on using "cheap" bullets for the Lott was a bullet that could be loaded so that it hit to a POA/POI that was usable with the rifle's fixed sight. Bullets from the Lee mould work to perfection in my rifle.

I think one should practce with the bullets he might chose to hunt with.It makes you familiar with how the rounds will work on the target and in the rifle.Also,it lets you get used to the recoil from those rounds.

that makes since kill milk jugs with Aframe or TSX when you can use a cheap hornady. you guys over think every little detail

I see zero sense in sending expensive pieces of lead down range into a dirt bank.

SW; I really liked the Rainer Plated 350 gr round shoulder bullet they were about $ 60 bucks shipping included the last 150 round box I bought . I moly coated them and pushed them to over 2600 with just a mid load from my Lott They would penetrate up to 15" in frozen red cedar and be riveted a little , but they were cheap and worked great ........... I got them from Midway , but maybe Graff or Mid South or someone else carries them ....

snowwolf look at www.westcastings.com.au scott is an aussie bulletmaker .makes 400 and 500 grain hard cast and plated projies . they will take 1800 fps.no trouble besides, you will get a great exchange rate just now.I have shot buff's with the 500's through both shoulders with 68 grains 2213 sc. in my .458 win.

A 30-30 model 94 might be a economical way of practicing offhand and with iron sights.No matter how cheap the bullets you use,there is the issue with powder and barrel wear.Lots of ofhand practice may save the day if one day you have the chance of meeting up with Simba-the king of beasts!

The MOST economical way to practice offhand is dry-firing. The second most economical way is to practice with a .22LR. However, the most EFFECTIVE practice is with the firearm you are trying to become proficient with.

Unless you're a hammerhead who fires 10 magnum (2200fps+) rounds per minute, barrel wear is a non-issue.
