Scroll down a few postings on the forum that opens and you will see a picture and sectioned drawing of the little devil.

A fellow on a Wby forum is getting 1 inch and less with 118 grains of 4064 in a 460 for 3220 f/s. Should get close to 3000 in a 458 Lott.

Pre-Order Barnes’ New .458 SOCOM TAC-TX™ Bullet by March 31st!

PRODUCT: 458 SOCOM 300-grain TAC-TX™

TEST WEAPON: Rock River Arms LAR-458

APPLICATION: Law Enforcement, Military (MOUT/CQB/VBSS), Personal Defense and Hunting

BULLET DESCRIPTION: All-Copper, Tipped, Grooved, Boattail

GENERAL: The 458 SOCOM 300-grain TAC-TX™ is designed to provide rapid expansion in “soft-target” threats to reduce the dangers posed by over penetration and provide reliable feeding in magazine-fed auto-loading rifles. The combination of the specially designed nose cavity and polymer tip help create almost instantaneous expansion in tissue, even at oblique angles.

The all-copper construction of the 458 SOCOM TAC-TX™ bullet means it will remain intact far more often than typical lead-core bullet designs (including bonded core) when barriers and tougher targets are encountered. This provides the peace of mind to engage critical threats with confidence. The tipped, all copper “X cavity” design also provides highly consistent performance when barriers are placed in front of critical threats, while still providing superior soft-target performance. Upon impact, the polymer tip is forced into the specially designed hollow nose, creating the initial expansion. This promotes more consistent performance through intermediate barriers such as clothing, wallboard, or other materials, which often cause failures with traditional “hollow-points” and other bullets. In addition, it helps avoid the negative stigma often associated with the use of hollow-point bullets in law enforcement and military operations.

The superiority of the tipped, boattail ballistic profile, when combined with the specialized TAC-TX™ design, provides the 458 SOCOM platform with a bullet that performs reliably at much wider practical ranges, as well as promoting far superior feeding in auto-loading weapons.

The decision to manufacture this bullet depends on the response Barnes receives to this announcement. The goal is to obtain advance orders for at least 25,000 bullets. If produced, the bullets will be sold in bulk quantities of 500, priced at $0.85 per bullet ($425 per minimum order of 500).

Those interested in ordering this bullet should contact Barnes directly by telephone (800-574-9200), and guarantee payment with a credit card. Credit cards will not be charged until orders totaling 25,000 or more bullets are received. If this doesn’t happen by March 31, 2009, the project will be canceled. If enough orders are received, the bullets will be manufactured and shipped no later than May 15, 2009. Once advance orders are filled, Barnes plans to offer the new .458 SOCOM TTSX bullets to handloaders. A box of 50 will retail for $52.39.

The 458 SOCOM 300-grain TAC-TX™ was designed with the following applications and features:

› Reliable expansion at typical 458 SOCOM velocities across the widest practical engagement ranges.
› Rapid expansion for engagement of soft targets or thin-skinned game, reduced risk of over-penetration
› All-copper “X cavity” design remains intact for consistent, enhanced performance
› Optimized ballistic design for higher accuracy potential. Less drop and wind drift means greater hit probability
› Tipped “spitzer” bullet design allows for significantly more reliable feeding through semi-automatic platforms such as the AR-15 series of firearms
› Ideal for CQB and VBSS applications in military, law enforcement and urban environments
› Perfect for rural LE, wildlife control, and hunting anything from small whitetails to black bear

Barnes Bullets already has a quantity of 330-grain .458 SOCOM Banded Solids in stock. These bullets do not expand, but provide straight, maximum penetration. The .458 SOCOM Banded Solid bullets are available now, item #45861, priced at $53.58 per 50

Maybe the tip makes it good for 45/70 like the 325 grain Hornady lever action bullet

The tip would make it too long to cycle in a lever action.

Too long in front of the first groove and they have to be crimped so that limits seating depth.

Maybe no advantage to them over the Hornady. The bloke with the 460 could not get accuracy with full loads and the Hornady but he did with backed off loads in the 458 Lott.

I will have to get some to try. I have a Lott and a SOCOM. My Lott and SOCOM shoot great with the Barnes 300gr TSX. My Lott really likes the 450 grain NF solids.

I have some of the 330 Solids and they are pretty interesting. I have shot a few in the 458 B&M and they are great, shoot same POI as my 350s and 300s. Would like to see some of these 300s too!

Probably by the first of the year will have a 458 2 inch version B&M on a DPMS. Will have a .500 version in a couple of months.
