Well, Ed Plummer has finished and delivered my new AHR Safari Dangerous Game Rifle in .500 A-Square. It has an English walnut stock with oval cheekpiece and African blackwood grip cap and fore end tip, some spare and, I think, tasteful English scroll engraving, a 25 inch, heavy contoured barrel and weighs in at a shade over 11 lbs. unloaded. Here are some photographs:       I'm working on some handloads and will be taking her to the range soon to wring her out. I'll be sticking with the NECG express sights. I think recoil from 500 A squre is categorised as OUCH! Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.  What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances. | |||

Yes, Very nice indeed! The 500 A2 is the ultimate big bore rifle. Practical. More than enough ft.lbs and lbs.ft. on both ends of the rifle.What is the twist rate of your barrel? Mine is a 10" twist McGowen, what A-Square chose for their original startup with this caliber. That is what got me started on McGowen barrels. If you need any load data for 570 grain XLC and GSC FN, 600 grain Barnes solids, or 50BMG black tip AP milsurp, I've got some loads. All of those will work with the standard throat. | |||

Since Wisner is not making these any more, I would like to know if I can buy the safety and trigger separately? I could use about ten of them! My 500 A2 is on a BRNO ZKK 602, and a Wisner safety was a must to replace the bassackward safety. At least the CZ safety works forward to fire and the trigger is functional, but too complicated! | |||

Thanks, all. Nickudu and fla3006--I don't know who makes the AHR safety and trigger these days, but I do know that I like them very much. BTW, since the recent posts regarding the problems Keith Atcheson had with his 3 postion safety, I have been careful to check all of mine and none of them, including this one, sticks, no matter how much up-thrust is put on the bolt when it's locked down. JOHAN--You know better than that. I'll never part with my Blaser "trash" any more than I will my other BRT! RIP--My barrel is a 14" twist. I'm focusing on H4350 and RL-15 powders under Barnes 570 grain XLCs and Woodleigh 600 grain PP softs and solids. 2,400+ fps ought to be possible, I think, if I want to go that fast. What powders and loads have you found to be best? Also, I'm pretty sure that Ed will sell you his safeties and triggers, and even install them for you. The trigger is located farther to the rear than the CZ standard trigger and I understand that it requires some reshaping of the trigger guard. McCray--You bet I'll be taking this one to the Caprivi (assuming that I can shoot it worth a damn), along with my .458 Lott in reserve, just in case--or maybe for plains game! Whitworth--I don't have any comparison pictures, but the .500 A2 is just the .460 Weatherby Mag., somewhat improved and necked up, so that should give you an idea. I'll find out soon enough about the recoil--and even though there are two mercury tubes in the buttstock, I'm afraid OUCH! is going to be the answer. I do have a removable X-Brake muzzle brake and plan to start with that baby screwed on tight. I'll post my shooting results as soon as I am able to get some shooting done--which I hope will be soon, if this winter would ever let up a little. mrlexma, You are on the right path. RL-15 110 grains is what I use for 570 grainers (XLC and GSC FN and HV) at 2450 fps in my 23" long 10" twist stainless McGowen. It is so good I wouldn't change it, even for Varget. 700 to 750 grainers work well with 110 grains of IMR 4350. I will consider H4350 for that though, since I am happiest with Hodgdon and Alliant powders. Of course the long and heavy target bullets are for single shot loading only, not from the magazine. And of course, when you can hit the target at 1000 yards with one of those, slow fire is O.K. I've got mine in a McMillan. You might consider that to keep the wood pretty, after you have blooded it at least once in Africa. Wood doesn't interest me anymore, and it has nothing to do with Viagra. | |||

I really like the proportions of the stock and the way it flows around the action. So many of the big boomers look clubby around the magazine well. The wood choice is great also it is figured just enough to show character but not so much that it looks like a show gun. You can see the strength of it through the wrist and forearm. Thanks for that. I have an AHR CZ 550 Magnum action serial #50,001 that deserves one of those. I wonder if that is where the AHR serial numbers started? If so, by what fluke did it end up at Great Northern Guns in Anchorage, Alaska? No CZ billboard on the left side of the action, just AHR markings below the wood line. Anybody else got a CZ 550 marked as AHR with a lower serial number than that? Ed might be able to tell me. | |||

So the one I have was numbered by an older system. This would cause a hang up at customs, with no visible markings on the action unless the barreled action is taken out of the stock. I will have the serial number engraved on the barrel and the action, visible above the stock line, for world trotting purposes. | |||

Exactly. I think you have no choice but to do it that way. On my 4457s, I list the make as CZ, the model as 550 and the serial numbers as they appear on the receiver ring. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer. | |||

Mike375--Your eyes do not deceive you. That is a threaded cap that can be replaced by an AHR X-Brake muzzle brake. For bench work only and most definitely NOT field shooting. Thanks again, all.
