Don't bother with the scope. As for recoil, I have a friend who has a .500 ASquare and we had to make up double rings to keep the screws from shearing off in the receiver. This was after drilling and tapping for the larger screws. After about 5 shots the scope came off and hit him in the upper part of his forehead. It was worth it all just to see the flinch he had on the next shot. Believe it of not, the Leupold scope on it is still intact and works.

Adding extra rings won't keep it from shearing screws off the receiver, unless you are adding extra scope base screws/bases???

My ZKK .500 A2 has an old 4X Zeiss Jenna with integral rail QD mount built into the scope, as well as a 2.5X Leupold in Warne QD low rings ... the only scope that will work with those rings, and I don't think Warne makes them that low anymore ... and all of these go onto the integral bases on the rifle. So, the Zeiss eliminates rings and bases entirely.

I also shoot it with a Sightron mildot scope 4X-16X at 1000 yards, and haven't trashed it yet, with CZ rings (integral bases)

My Irons are a Wisner rear African express (copy of the pre-64 M70 African sight) and an NECG sourdough/patridge gold front.

The rear sight is filed flattop with square notch like a combat pistol or a Merkel 140-2.

With mount bases screwed and glued I have never had any problem wit two 378s I previously owned or two 460s and the 460s only had the old Pendleton Dekickers which did not do much.

Because I use a bag of lead shot behind the gun those rifles fired a lot of shots and that was with the standard 6 X 48 screws.

But I don't think mrlexma will have any problems with screws/bases on that particular rifle Big Grin

Like RIP I am mystified about how extra rings on the scope helps prevent the base screws from shearing.

The ZKK/CZ system is rock solid, as RIP and Mike375 know, because it does not rely on separate bases, but has them machined onto square bridges integrated into the action.

I use CZ rings on my AHR rifles that are specially modified by AHR. I am having a pair made for this rifle, and will attach a scope for bench work, and just for the hell of it, although I am not inclined to use a scope for hunting on this rifle.

The CZ factory rings are machined from steel and are massively strong, besides which Ed Plummer modifies them for me to use four 8-40 hardened hex bolts. I don't like the screws in the rings provided by the CZ factory, because they are rather small and it is too easy to shear off the heads.

The main mounting screws on the CZ factory rings are easily replaced with automotive metric machine cap screws that take a 9 mm hex wrench. These screws come already blacked and the hex wrench in your pocket is better than a screwdriver somewhere else in the kit.

The rifle looks great, but I'm getting a serious flinch just looking at the cartridge photos.

How many of you have seen the video clip of the guy who gets off on a girl kicking him in the nuts? I think that guy must like these monster bores as well. Mrlexma, might that be you?

ForrestB,

Cut it out. I've never seen the video, but you're getting me all worked up. Do you have her name and phone number? Big Grin

Kidding aside, I haven't fired this beast yet.

After I do, I'll be sure to let you know how it felt. If my fingers still work.

Question for RIP - would you give load data for the milsurp 650 grain bullets in the 500A2 ? Have you used the bullets sold by Cabela's? Where do you obtain low cost 650 bullets in .510 bore? Do you know of a source of 575 - 600 grain cast bullets for this cartridge? Thanks for any assistance with these questions - KMule

Very, very nice rig. That is a Brno 602 action, is it not?

I would be very interested to know where they obtained the safety for your rifle as I have been trying to locate someone who sells them.

KMule,
I recall you have a lovely .510/460 Wby. I mark my 500 A2 similarly.

The 647 grain Speer ball with 110 grains of IMR 4350 and the 668 grain milsurp ball (gotta watchem, they vary in weight) with 110 grains of AA4350 were all about 2150 fps in my rifle.

I would prefer H4350 for 650 to 750 grainers. H4350 is the best powder going for the most applications. I will try it next.

I don't use cast bullets, nor have I gotten bullets for 50 BMG/.510 from Cabela's.

Mil-Tec was the name of the outfit that used to deliver milsurps to me for 35 cents per bullet. Seems like they shipped from St. Louis. Good deal.

I don't have access to my records right now.

Please report back if you try H4350. I will too.
I have used the other 4350's in the 105 to 115 grain charge range with the ball and AP (700 grainer). Seems 110 was across the board best with 647 to 750 grainers at 2100 to 2200 fps in my two guns.

I'd start with 105 grains of H4350 and work up to the sweet spot with the bullet at hand in your rifle.

Bwanabob,

Thanks. The rifle uses a modified CZ 550 Magnum action, which is not identical to the BRNO ZKK 602, but very close.

This one has a straightened bolt handle with the hole filled, a modified trigger and three position safety. AHR sells the safeties for US$250 and will install them for US$50 more. I'm not sure who makes the safeties or whether they will fit the 602. But you can check that with Ed Plummer of AHR, if you like.

AHR

Rip
My gunsmith made his own base that had double rings to keep it from sliding in the rings and had an extra screw in each base, and this held it. To start with, the guy was shooting it with a 3.5-10x and I'm sure the extra weight wasn't helping things. A 1.5-5x would probably have stayed on the rifle.

Ah so. thumb He can now do 1000 yard target practice with his 500 A2 with impunity. Thanks for clarifying.

A picatinny rail with 4 rings is a good idea on the 500 A2 for scope use beyond a 2.5X Leupold.

MR,

Thanks for the info and I have already sent an email to AHR to see if they can help me out. I have two ZKK602 projects that need these safeties - a .404 which is shootable and getting close to being completed and a .505 which is just a box of parts, at the moment.
