505 Options
I’m considering selling my CZ 505 Gibbs in order to build a custom 505. As I see it I have three options:

(1) Have my factory CZ reworked
(2) Sell the CZ and buy a Hein
(3) Sell the CZ and buy a GMA

I’m looking to keep the total cost around 5K. I’ll go synthetic on the stock if I have to. What is my best option of the three choices above?

Thanks for any responses

Matt V

What's the cost of a Heym?

1) Why are you considering selling your CZ 550 Gibbs?

2) I like the GMA option.

Not sure if Heym makes bolt guns? I think you meant Hein. I get the names crossed to.

But Hein's website quotes $3,050 USD for barreled action.

My buddy has a GMA on order and says he's got around $4,000 in the barreled action.

So for me the question is how much better is the GMA than the Hein?

I might be able to book a buffalo hunt next year and want to take a 505. My CZ needs work (feeding, bedding, etc.).

I was wondering if I'd just be better off with an option other than the CZ.

Thanks for the link and the clarification/correction. I'm pretty sure the Heym would be out of my price range. So let me rephrase, not sure if Heym makes a bolt gun for 5K...

You know, since you are already invested in the CZ why not just put the money in it, since whatever you get custom won't bring its full investment value anyways using a CZ action to start with shouldn't be a worry.

Get a new bolt handle on it, new solid trigger (a couple guys here have gotten one from Tom Burgess) have it restocked with a nice stick. You would be under your 5000 mark and have a real nice rifle. Plus your wait time would likely be less since you already have it.

That’s probably the most practical approach….

I’ve got three actions (VZ 24) out with Tom Burgess right now and am going to send him two more in the future. I’ve seen his work on some CZ’s and it is spectacular.

Who would I have do my wood work? Have the factory stock bolted and bedded or go brand new?

I have 3 rifles from WFF Hein with 2 more on the way and they are absolutley great. My biggest is a 458 lott with an mpi stock. At the time (2.5 yrs ago), I invested about 4k in each plus optics. The wait is a little longer but if your just getting a barreled action the time may be shorter. For the money, the quality is unsurpassed. Greg Hein was great to work with and I would not hesitate to recomend him and his work.

The German manufacturer Heym does make bolt action rifles in 505 Gibbs and AR member New_Guy is, I think, a dealer. Here's a link to the German web site:

Can you get a synthetic stock that will fit the GMA? In that same price range you could also look at the Satterlee Arms action.

That's true, the satterlee is another great option. I just think that for the difference in cost starting out the money could be spent on the wood/stocking of it and leave you some change.

As to who? depends, how about Lee Helgeland, he's up in Montana too I think, or one of our resident experts. Chic has done some for forum members who can attest to his skill. Might consider Biesen too, supposed to be master's with wood and have a very comfortable pattern, from what I hear.

You can forget getting a Hein rifle within 12 months of ordering one.
I have had my LH 375 rifle on order since Feb 06 and it was forecasted to be built in 8-10 months. 10 months was reached at the end of 2006 and I am still waiting. I sure hope the rifle is worth it.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Snowwolf, don't you just wish people would be honest with you on delivery dates in the first place? I have a rifle that was to take 6-8 months to get, that was 22 months ago! It does get old, all of the extra waiting.
03 August 2007, 21:19
CARLOSTHEJACKAL
Snowwolfe, the Heins are worth the wait. I have 3 (458 lott,375 h&h,338 win) with a 25-06 on the way. In the future I will order a 22 hornet. Those complete 3 rifles were all built at the same time and took about 18 months. My only suggestion is to send Greg the ammo you want it to shoot so he can make sure it fits and feeds in the magazine correctly.

I talked to Ed at AHR about fixing up my Gibbs. Ed was very helpful and said that they could get it get it tuned up no problem. He said he would like to take a look at it before he decided what work needs to be done.

We never talked any $$$ but I did ask about the 600 OK. I’m considering selling the 505 and taking the difference I'd sink into it and take the plunge on the 600.

I’m going to take the weekend to think it over. At least I’d have a gun built right form the ground up!

I saw that thread…

Looks like a good deal when you consider all the extras…

The only problem is I’ve got to sell my 505 to generate a down payment & need the lag time of the rifle being built to come up with the extra cash….

I have a CZ 505; the stock cracked after about 50 rounds; I bedded it and installed 2 cross-bolt;had the "hair trigger" disconnected; polished up the action, and applied a sorbothane "stick-on" to increase the height of the comb; feeds and shoots great, and fits me perfectly. Thats the route I would go.
