If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

103 paces 1/4 away. Put one right through the pump house.
You guys that have "ashley express front sights" how do you like that white line that runs up the center post? I'm thinking about putting one on my front as well looking for some feed back.

If the tax bill on your house is that much of a problem, you're overextended.

Put the chat about guns aside until your financial situation is addressed.

Then, jump back in with both feet! The Spartans might be out by then. Wink

CP's 460. I bet the 405's would have done just as well but with my peep sights I doubt I could use the flatter trajectory anyway so i thought I would error on the heavy side, they do the trick and would feel comfortable taking a shot from any angle if the range is reasonable.

My Guide Gun - Mjolnir - is a blue steel, ported 45/70, circa 1998. Installation of the WWG trigger happy kit improved but did not perfect the trigger pull. Next time I have it apart I expect to install their bear proof extractor and red aluminum magazine follower. If I were rich I'd install Brockman's cartridge trap, as it is I'll buy a Galco leather butt cuff one of these days. Replaced the truck tire the factory calls a recoil pad with a SIMS - much, much better. Played with the original irons but my eyes were never great and they're not improving with age. Put on a Brockman post front, the sort that used to have a brass line running up the middle. For a rear sight I put on a Lyman receiver sight. With a flat topped post to help hold elevation it shoots into three inches at 100 when I do my part. Played with scopes too. First I tried an M8 4x, then a Vari-X I 1-4x, in the conventional position. The sight-line was too high for a proper cheek-weld. Tried the XS scout scope mount (a quick and easy install BTW) and a Leupold 2.5x Scout Scope. It shoots under two inches with Winchester 300 grain Nosler Partition ammo. The scope was still too tall and the back up sights ended up needlessly high as well. It now wears only the Lyman receiver sight and the shortest available Marbles fiber optic bead (carved a sky-light into the original front side hood). Mjolnir's only taken one whitetail buck, using the Remington factory 405 soft-nose @ 1200 fps. Kills great and you can "eat right up to the hole" just like Uncle Elmer used to say. FWIW the Federal 300 gr hollow-nose softs clock 1600 fps from the 18-1/2 inch ported tube. This coming weekend two 405 gr cast lead flat-points @ 1300 will be used to fill my doe tags. Details follow.

Nicely done! Great pictures too. What speed are you running the 460s? I've got some 420 LBTs I plan to try one of these days. Nice to have a bullet arrive already expanded, don't you think?

nordrseta, I've clocked them at just over 1700 out of my ported GG. You can get good load data from the new AA booklet using AA2230.

gohip2000, you can always try for a double. Wait for a couple does/pigs to line up side to side and get two for one. I've done this twice now, I'm still trying for the tripleSmiler I bet you would still get a pass through, have yet to recover one of 460's when shot through or at game. A south to north shot on a big pig might do it.

I have a Marlin 1895SS with a full length magazine(had it installed)and a Pacmar stock cushion. My favorate, however, is a Gibbs Lee-Enfield #4 conversion to 45/70. It has a heavy (much thicker than my Marlin) Navy Arms 22" barrel. It has a long throat and since the magazine was designed for the .303, it will take a 500 gr RNSP bullet loaded to a OAL of 2.93" (but the 550 gr very flat hard cast lead can only be loaded to about 2.8"). Starting at 8.75 lbs and then with a mercury supressor in the stock (along wiht some extra lead) and a slip on stock cushion, recoil is much less than my Marlin. I don't push it though (500 gr RNSP @ 1,750 fps and 550 gr hard cast lead @ 1,625 fsp). Search under "Ron Card, 45-70" for an article on these. He once indicated he pushed 500 gr bullets to 1,950 fps. I should note that some of the Gibbs conversions were built on the weaker actioned Lee Enfield #1 Mark III.
