I was just thinking of a big bore rifle with a extreme long barrel just for maximum velocity.
Would the .505 gibbs with more case capacity be better than the .500 Jeffery for maximum velocity? If the barrel is over 30" maybe 35?
Just a tought!

With a barrel length that long, seems to me that you'd have to use a very slow burning powder to help velocity any, if at all.

You might consider loading longer than having a longer than 26" barrel for your velocity goal. Consider a 500 Jeffery with 750 grain Hornady A-Max BMG bullet loaded to maximum OAL for your mag or single loaded to even longer. With the Jeffery you might have pressure issues with the brass so I like the idea of using Chey-Tac brass necked up to .510"

Geez,
Who's going to carry the other half of the rifle? Meant o be a humorous query without the cartoon.

Why not just buy a Barrett 50 BMG?

Ah ... that makes sense. No new loads to date, but I'm about to. I have a hundred 570g A-Frames I want to start loading. I may use IMR 4350 and see what it takes to get them to 2500 fps

Smiler

I have a 500 A2 with 27" barrel on a Ruger No.1.
It is 29" with muzzle brake screwed on,
A pair of 500 A2's:

But now I want a 50-140 Sharps Ruger No.1 with 34" barrel,
like a Long Range Express Sharps of yore,
and like a modern Pedersoli 50-90 Sharps replica (1:26" twist for my .512/680-grain and lighter cast bullets).

22" and 34" barrels below:

So I reckon a twist of 1:22" for my .510/777-grain cast GC bullet will do fine. Just for kicks.

I might even profane some blackpowder in that toy. Just for kicks.

I am going to have to design my own reamer for this one to be able to use either turned brass or, better, drawn brass from Captech, if they ever make anymore of it.

I must get brass in hand first to measure with my bullets seated.

The plan is for that brass with .510-caliber bullets like used in the ".510 Nitro Express" that D'Arcy Echols did for Bob Schneidmiller.
It used 50-140 Sharps 3-1/4" brass
in a Martin Hagn falling-block action.
COTW has a blurb on it, page 241 of 13th edition.

Googling only turns up a reference to a September 1993 AMERICAN RIFLEMAN article by Michael McIntosh,
still looking ...

Mike Venturino's BP Cartridge Reloading Primer, from Buffalo Arms and others, has some BP data for the 50-140...1-20 tin/lead NEI #50-520GC 537 gr, 140 gr Fg, 3.825" oal, 1479 fs from a 30" bbl Shiloh Sharps.

Buffalo Arms had 50-140 at one time but now they are waiting for Captech back-order.

I have an Armi-Sport 1874 Sharps replica, 34" Quigley 50-90 which is pressure limited to ~29KPSI due to the firing pin arrangement, the action itself is plenty strong for higher numbers.

I designed a bullet that casts ~725 gr with WW that I also install a piece of pointed brass that brings the weight up to ~780. I get 1600fs plus with several powders.

QL will develop loads for you as there very little data online or anywhere else for that matter.

Using a modern falling block action you can get into the 60KPSI range and 2200 fs plus with little trouble.

NONAGONAGIN,
Yep, Mike Venturino's books, I have them. tu2

My McNelly carbine above is a 50-70 and it shoots well.
It is an Armisport too.
Apparently they make some good barrels now and then. tu2

We are highjacking this thread, eh?
How about bringing some life back to the BPCR forum?
Go here please, and thanks:
