500 Jeffery Bolt Rifle Login/Join

While shooting double rifles at the range today I had the opportunity to shoot a 500 Jeffery bolt rifle.
The rifle was made and so marked by M.L. Mandarino. It was on a Mauser action. The rifle looked vry well made , had a very nice stock and handled very well. We had Superior and westley richards ammo. The Superiior ammo was too long for the magazine, the WR fit fine.
I shot the rifle off hand at 25 yards and the Superior hit right in the bulls eye.
The recoil was not bad. It did not hurt my shoulder or face. It was brisk and pushed back farther than the 470's we were also shooting.
The rifle felt lighter than the 470 doubles we were shooting. The Jeffery looked shot and felt good.

Make no mistake, It is still Bolt Rifle Trash......
But it is NICE Bolt rifle Trash. Big Grin

The Westley richards amo is madem by Wolfgang Roney that is why it is headstamped WR. The WR does not stand for Westley Richards but I guess that they like the fact that the initials match.

Sounds like a bunch of rich snobs braging about their big bore double rifles to me. Or maybe its the need to compensate for being a small bore in other areas.

450,
carefull with that jeffe-ry!!!

sure it's bolt rifle trash... but it's a jeffe-ry!!

though it wasn't mine, these certainly are FUN guns to shooting, if you are ready for them.

i shot a merkel 470 right after some load dev with my 500... i thought the merkel looked and felt like a 410... until it went off... but, incomparision, i think they are close to the same level of toleration... with the advantage being to the BRT in handling recoil

Joeybones, These guys are as down to earth as the plains of Africa. You will get to see that when you are around a little longer. They are just kidding each other a bit and this is their tongue-in-cheek way of teasing the rest of us who haven't taken the plunge into the "world 'a DOUBLES"
Couldn't say anything about compensating. You're on your own to find out about that.

Joey,
it's a perception thing... 450 ne 2 AINT a rich snob... there's a gentle rivilary between those that think they should be able to pull two triggers in finicy guns and those of that know what "progress" is.

however, i'll tell you this square, that you aren't aware of any of this and call people rich snobs (I KNOW rusty aint... he's as down to earth as can be, and a true gentleman) ruffles some feathers.

Or, to take it back to motorcycles, perhaps you need to listen to David Allan Coe's "But I'll get a harley someday"... which is a counterculter ballad that while a honda MAY be a better motorcycle, it simply aint a harley...

and the harley in question would be a big TWIN...

which leads us back to double rifles....

A little good-natured ribbing never hurt anyone. I am a bolt-action guy to the core. Why? Doubles are out of my reach financially. If I had the money, do you think I would own a double or two (or three!)? You bet your ass!

Andre, It was Romey ammo, the owner of the rifle said he got it from Westley Richards, I should have ben more clear. The Superior was a little too long but it shot good.

Clen 71, the owner did say it was Monty [Monte?]. Do you know anything about him.
The workmanship on the rifle was very nice.

Rusty, I did not think there was anything wrong with a DRSS member shooting another fellas bolt rifle. After all it is not like I tried to do something crazy with it... like hunt something dangerous. Big Grin

Joeybones,
Is there any chance you can come to the Dallas Safari Club Show in 2006?
You could hang out with us for a couple of days and see what we are really like.
At this years DSC several of the AR members met for the first time. We had a little get together in JudgeG's room and went to dinner on Fri and Sat night. It was a great time.
You are welcome to join us in 2006.

Thanks for the invite to the Dallas Safari Club but due to my impecunious condition at present I will have to repectfully decline. Oh and new-guy thanks for the unfriendly advice , but I can form opinions based on what I have been reading. I can't see how poking fun at one's choice of rifle does any good, nor do I think being able to afford a double rifle makes you a better person than the next , only more fortunate. Besides I have resolved the issue of double VS bolt action by having my Winchester model 70 fitted with a bayonet lug.

What really interests me about this thread is that the rifle was made by Monte Mandarino.

Monty Mandorino is very well known for making exquisite reproduction black powder rifles from the time of the 1700s to early 1800s in London.
Manton comes to mind. He also is an expert in restoration of old black powder rifles.

And so it is very interesting to hear that Mr. Mandorino has made some modern big bore rifles as well.

Well Rusty , the way to tell if your a big enough prick is to touch your chin to your chest and spit , if it hits your stomch before it hits your Prick ,either your stomach is too big or your prick is too small. Judging from your picture its hard to tell which it might be.

I beg to differ with Mr. Coe. After WW2 there was no motorcycle industry left in Japan. The US government asked Harley to go over and get it going again as part of the restoration process. They produced a bike similar to the Harley of the day. I don't recall the Japanese name but it translated to "King of the Road".If you ride anything from Japan today its roots are all Harley Davidson. I owned a harley, well it was a half a Harley,a Sportster. Kinda like the bolt action gun of motorcycles.

Joeybones,
Since we are passing judgment on people we do not know, in my opinion you are a niggardly moron. The guys in the DRSS are a helluva good group of people. Since they won't come straight out and tell you to stick it straight up your ass, then by all means allow me - sideways by the way!
Rusty, Tony, all the rest - see you guys for the pig hunt next month (hopefully).

Ray, you are right about M.M's rifle, it was very nicely done. The stock, rust blue, sights and sight rib, how the action worked, etc, made for a nice package. The only thing I could see wrong with the rifle was.... it only had one barrel. Big Grin

JOEYBONES,

You pretty well got yourself into the "fast lane" when you joined up on this forum.... probably moreso in African Hunting and Big Bores sections as the rifles and the players from each tend to frequent both forums.

If one can't "run with the big dogs" without whining and barking about the company, then probably best to find a new pack (or kennel). Not too late to let bygones be bygones, but will probably require a hard right turn on your part, IMHO.

Sorry to ruffle so many feathers , I would not have guessed a bunch of guys willing to go toe to toe with the big 5 would be such a sensitive group. Maybe I just don't get why you bash each other about choiceof rifle or caliber when the things you value so dearly (guns and hunting) are under attack from so many organizations.

I guess it comes down to you haven't been involved in the forum long enough to know the folks. There are things I will jokingly post to some folks, that I woulnd't post to someone I didn't know.

As an owner of big bore bolt guns, and no doubles (yet), I took no offense at the comment, I thought it was funny.

I think anyone that takes their choice of firearm so seriously that they'd take offense at a snide or joking comment, needs to lighten up.

If you know what you choose works for you, who cares what others think, or say?

You still don't get it, do you? They are having fun with each other. It's not that they're sensitive; they're just not interested in being attacked by a newbie.

...It's all good!

I really like the tone of the discussion...Keep it up!

As for a double - I'm going with one of Butch's guns (Searcy). They are clean, made with modern technology and are made here in the USA! Plus, that old "codger" up there in Idaho (just poking fun Ray!) recommends them and he's been around longer, killed more buffalo and is more tenacious than me! Gotta follow somebody's lead at first!
