Just got off the phone with Keith. He is out of ICU and into a room in the intermediate care unit. Still hooked up to a bunch of tubes but thinks they will start pulling some of those out in the next day or so. Sounded in good spirits . . . mentioned several nice looking nurses so I took that as a good sign. Expects to be in the hospital for another couple of days at least. Will have to do dialysis three times a week after he is discharged. He wanted me to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers and said he is looking forward to getting on AR soon to visit with folks.

As Mike posted, Keith is improving and has been moved to IMU room 303. Keith said he was in 303 only because 375 was already taken and they didn't have a room numbered 458 Lott. MMP

Hey guys, thanks for all of your kind thoughts and prayer.

Got home about an houur ago. All of the tubes are gone. Still have a 6-7" scare over my left side and to the back. This is from removing about one liter of fluid, and removing the outer membrane from my lower lobe and some more off the top lobe. Enough fluid had collected to tear the left lung from it's anchor to the chest wall.

This was an unkown problem to me. It ws discovered ion a routine chest x-ray.

I had gone to the hospital the simply get started on dailysis. Have tio get the first three there. So 4 days turned into 15.

Is this type one or two diabetes (if you know). Type 2

Has he been on chronic dialysis? Just getting startedAny Blindness? Some sight loss, mainly in the right eye.

Any amputation of digits or limb portions.no

Dialysis can change you weigh 20 pounds in a day.

Do you have a guess at what his weight was, pre-this admission.About the same as it is now. Still have a same amout oif kidney function left. Ok for some volume removal noit for filtering much. 8%

Does he have a history of smoking? Two or four packs/day.NOPE

The alcohol does not matter so much unless he was sipping a fifth of Old Crow every evening.nope

Pulling fluid from a lung is not a big deal in and of itself (I know, I have been through it at home).

The first time they tried, they got about 550 ml with a needel in my back. It made me break into to a sweatDo you recall if the fluid from his lung looked like Sangria wine? That would be worrisome for a lung tumor; but I think that is unlikely.just dark bloody water

Most likely - I do not know - I am not his hospitalist, pulmonologist or some other type of flea; heck, I am on medical leave from medicine myself.

What you have conveyed so far is not too worrisome in the big picture of his (likely) Diabetes type 1.

Oh yeah, any Heart Attacks a small one back in '04(large or small), Strokes, or episodes of leg clots needing a filter placed in the big vein below his heart.

I believe he has a couple hog hunts left in him. Keep him active when he gets home from the hospital; take his television far away, and only offer him rehabilitation toys for entertainment.

Hi Keith, good to see you are back in front of the computer. It at least means you are vertical enough to enjoy AR once again. It is a real drag being ill, in and out of the hospital and having to reassure them that yes you are alright every 15 minutes when they wake you up to take some more blood.
I just started my insulin injections this week because I wasn't taking enough care with my diet to do it on my own. I had to give in for a one month trial and then hopefully back to my doing it without the needle.
Once you get the smell of gunpowder in you again I am sure you will be better.
