Gents:
A new toy to feast your eyes on. A Jeffery single shot from 1916 in the classic .600 nitro express. This one came to my attention after my book was printed and last fall the owner called and wanted to sell. I jumped!
Cheers,
Cal

Very nice. By the way, after six years, I finally got my letter from William Evans.

Hollis: The wait was worth it, I hope.
Brandon: Barrel is 26" weight is 12 pounds. I bought it on a spur but am a doubles man at heart so I may pass it on in a few years.
Phatman: I will take more photos when I figure out how to post them here--a friend did this one.
Cheers, all, and thanks for your comments. Jeffery made 70 .600s--33 singles and 37 doubles. I have copies of the ledger pages for all 70. Quite a treat to look through the ledgers as see what was produced in the old days.

What a rare and pretty beast.
Every shot you make remember there are thousands who would love to be that person pulling the trigger and wearing that special grin that big bore shooters know.
Congrats.

He said it weighs 12 pounds.
I would rechamber it to shoot 3.5" 20-Ga Hellboy 900-grain slugs with RMC brass. Wink

Does not look like it weighs 12 pounds -- which is tribute to how the British could make rifles that had a svelte look to them. Very nice.

Hi guys:
The 600, as are all Jeffery single shots, proofed for the 100-grain cordite load. With a 26-inch barrel this is 1800 fps with the standard 900-grain bullet. To obtain that, 145-150 grains of IMR 4831 is needed. This will kick like hell in a 12-pound rifle. My scale says 12 pounds but the ledger says 11 1/2 pounds.

The factory ledger for my rifle states: ".600 bore falling block rifle, 26" barrel, 1 standing & 2 flush leaves, to 300 yards, platina foresight, short checkered forepart, pistol grip, eyes for sling, bead border engraved, 11 1/2 pounds. Made by H. Leonard and Le Personne, cost price 9 pounds 10, selling price 37 pounds, 10" Sold in 1916.

There were six identical .600 falling block rifles made prior to WWI and they were sold during the war years. Of interest the last .600 Jeffery made was (I believe) three serial numbers before their .500 Jeffery. I wonder if they saw the end of the .600s and stopped production to promote the new .500.

My rifle is from the 24400 to 24405 serial range.

This rifle of mine shoots a good group but shoots high. This may be due to the first shots with very low velocity with only 100 grains of 4831. Tomorrow I'll try 120 grains so see if the quicker barrel time brings down the group.

Thanks for your kind comments. Large caliber and bore English rifles rock.
Cal

Cal,
It may be unfounded, but it looks like the inside of the trigger guard slants down right in front of the shooter's index finger. Does that whack your trigger finger during recoil?

Brandon:
Yes it does and so, too, is the catch for the lever release that is in the trigger guard. Probably not the best design.
