I built him a 700 AHR with a steel buttplate last year and he has survived that. He's got to be in his late 70's I'm guessing. Don't fool around with those old guys, their tough as nails.

Cyber bullying would be to arrange an AR based intervention. I am just trying to find an alternative to Sarah Palin on outdoor tv. Mike

Biebs doesn't keep them long enough to call it hoarding. He's getting worse than Safari Kid was.

The first 375H&H rifle I ever owned was a Westley Richards Mauser actioned sporting rifle. It was made between the wars, and was fitted with a checkered Buffalo horn butt plate that was just as hard as a steel butt plate. I used that rifle for several years and I didn't find it unusually hard on my shoulder. Would I rather have a Pachmeyr decelerator? You bet, but it wasn't bad with the buffalo horn solid butt plate! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Same with my 425 Westley except it has a steel plate. I suspect it has more recoil than your average 375H&H but it seems to distribute it pretty well.

I'd do it. But then again I'm a glutton for punishment. I don't recall the 4 bore I touched off having a recoil pad, but it weighed 26lbs. If you are not expecting it, an 03-A3 with a 9oz trigger and 200gr max loads with a slick steel butt plate is rather unpleasant also. I prefer a steel butt on calibers up to a 458 Win..I used leather covered Silvers pads for years..Trust me a Silvers pad is as hard as a steel butt plate! Would I shoot a 600 or 700 with a steel butt plate. I would not, but I wouldn't shoot them with a recoil pad either..I have shot a few .577s and one 600 and have no desire to ever do so again. I like the look and feel of a steel butt plated gun, but I don't mind a recoil pad either, sorta depends on the gun .I would never remove a steel butt plate off a Jeffery,s, Holland & Holland, WR, or their ilk off and stick a recoil pad on one, regardless of the caliber. I'd just man up and live with it the way it came. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

Drew, the 700 Searcy and the 4 bore both had recoil psdd. The Ken Owen 4 bore was a hard red rubber silvers pad. Hard, but way better than steel but pads. Used to be bigdoggy700 with 929 posts . Originally registered as bigdoggy 700 in July 2006.

My 375, made by Holland in 1961 has a factory fitted recoil pad...My 404 Jeffery, made in 1926 has a factory fitted steel butt plate...only difference is that the steel tends to slip during recoil so fast follow up shots are more difficult due to the butt plate having to be repositioned before reloading...These guns are made to carry a lot and shoot a little - mostly off hand. If you have a problem with recoil shooting off a bench, place a couple of pounds of leadshot between your shoulder and the rifle, this will reduce felt recoil significantly as it "adds weight to the rifle" and therefore reduces felt recoil. Hope this helps....

I have a 404 and a 416 with steel buttplates. Holding them firmly is more important than a rubber pad. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.
