Which shoots flatter between the two? I know the .416 stays supersonic for at least 200 yards longer but I don't know if that goes hand in hand with trajectory?

When the .408 CT was first introduced there were some here that said the cartridge never lived up to the claimes of it's designers and I'm wondering if these problems have been solved?

The only negative I've heard about the .416 Barret is that it's too overbore, are there any other negatives against it?

Thanks
Larry A.

Larry,

Provided the BC of each bullet is the same the faster one will shoot flatter. The .408 is a big POS. I know people who have tried to get them to shoot accuratly and have not had any luck. These are well known benchrest shooters with lots of exerience.

My bet goes with Ronnie Barrett. He has the name and funding to make this venture become sucessuful unlike the clowns behind CheyTac.

Send me a personal email and I will give you my phone number. I would like to tell you a story from someone who has had experience with the .408 CheyTac. You wont belive the story.

I've already emailed Barnes, telling them that with the new .416 Barrett, they should consider building some "bore rider" 400 gr. match solids, as well as a 400 gr. TSX BT, citing that it could be used by .416 Rigby fans as well!!!!! clap BTW, my email was the first that the customer service had heard of the Barrett .416.

Feel free to email them yourselves: EMAIL BARNES!!! thumb

I also asked them to start building some 325 gr. TSX BTs for my elk rifle. Wink

I have seen a picture of the .416 Barrett cartridge. Heh heh.

First impression is of a scaled up .338 Lapua Magnum. Tee hee.

Barrett is advertizing 3250 fps with a 400 grainer, surely at reasonable pressure.

The .408 CheyTac claims 2900 fps with a 419 grainer at +70K PSI. bewildered

One would need a 50BMG capable action to contain the .408 CheyTac on the Gibbs case head.

The .416 Barrett makes more sense than the .408 CheyTac.

Until some real specs come along on this shortened and necked down 50BMG ...

guessing: .416 Barrett case length, about 3.0"?
Shoulder angle about 20 degrees? Caliber length neck?

Barrett says it holds 200 grains of powder.
The loaded cartridge is 4.58" long.
That high BC bullet is 2 inches long.

I bet it kicks just a little bit.My 7.5 pound 416 with 410 gr woodleigh bullets at just 2400 fps kick pretty good.I thought about either a 416 ultra mag or a 408 weatherby. That would fit in a regular rifle.
