Has anyone necked a 460 weatherby up for the .500 bullets. I want to shoot the .500 bullets not the .510

I have said for a long time a .500" 460 WBY would be cool but never heard of one done before. Also you could file off the belt and create a wildcat that headspaces off the shoulder.
Other options...
RIP's 49-10
.500"-450 Rigby
.500"-416 Rigby (extractor headspace)
500 MDM
Good luck!

Are you going:
1- NO shoulder, straight walled, tapered ala 550 Magnum
http://ammoguide.com/?catid=739
or
2- With shoulder, simply more pronounced than the 500 A2?

The case is just a 460 weatherby necked up to take the 500 smith and wesson bullets nothing more. I plan to shoot Barnes 275 grain pistol bullets in it for A 100 yard bear bait from a bench. the rifle will be just under 16 pounds with a 30" 1.250 barrel. I used a Capstick this spring for the same thing and it was great so I was thinking a 50 cal bullet at 3400+ should be even better BOOM

Right!

Ross:
Have you thought about the throat yet?
For the bullets you want to use, you might consider
copying the same throat as used on the 12.7X68 49-10.
AKA 49-Bore/.500-Caliber/.338 Lapua Magnum Improved of 2010.
That is a proven performer with all the pistol and rifle bullets
from CEB, North Fork, Hornady, and Barnes.
I haven't tried cast lead bullets yet,
but that throat should be ideal for that too.

If the case is just necked up, and you are only shooting 500 S&W bullets. You are wasting powder and potential performance. As the pistol bullets will NOT stand the velocitiy from your rifle. North Fork or CEB bullets WILL withstand your rifles full potential. If you arre not going to push beyond the S&W bullets designed velocity window. Shorten the case by a bunch.

About a 12 lb rifle will do the jog. a 16 lb gun is way too heavey.

The CEB Non Cons and Raptors will make mush out of the bear vitals at that velocity.
Ranger Rick has some nice 700 grain cast bullets for this cart. Be sure your twist is at least 1 in 12.

This rifle will be shot by kids as well as adults. That is why it is going to be 16 Lbs
I shot the Non Cons in my Capstick and they kill like lightning. I also modified the bullets and drilled them 1/4" deeper. On one bear we had 5 exit holes. All the bears were shot at 168 yards with the Capstick and a Lott. 3 kids 12 years old shot there first big game animal with the 470 Capstick equiped with a 1.5 oz jewell trigger. We had 14 different. bears come to one bait in 6 days. They do love Popcorn Balls. Ross

Still avoiding the throat issue, eh? Wink

Hogkiller makes good points, but you can slow down
for cast bullet loads by using light loads of AA 5744.
No need to shorten the case just for the plinkers.

So, you put the appropriate pilot on a 460 WBY reamer to fit your
.500 barrel, then you have to apply a neck and throat
with a neck and throat reamer.
Or you get an all-in-one reamer made, as you said above that
you were doing.
Surely you must specify a throat to have a reamer made.

Since when did Barnes make a 500gr/.509-caliber X-Bullet?

Rip I'll take a photo of the bullet. I saved it. The gun belonged to a Barnes rep.

Rip you're right that wasn't a 500 gr. I weighed the recovered bullet & it is 319.6 gr.( all petals intact) I don't know what weight it was. Having trouble uploading but i will get it posted.

It's all in the bullet.
Make that a .510/570-grain FN solid at 2400 fps and it will go in the buttock of a big bull bison and out his throat, in an apparent straight line.
Make that a .510/570-grain X-bullet (XFB, XLC, TSX) hollow point "soft" and it will not even exit on a broadside chest shot, at same 2400 fps impact.
I have pictures. Wink

the 416 rigby case has plenty of diameter for a shoulder. Cut off the belt, in other words use a Rigby case, and you will have a "490 Mbogo". I'd recommend 0.25-.375" freebore.

Ross10,
Excellent advice on throat from 416Tanzan. Wink
I'll bet Dave Kiff does not exceed that.

A single shot 49-bore/.500-cal./460Wby is a charming concept.
Cool in a single shot too.

These two rifles are .510/460Wby, I used muzzle brakes instead of extra weight,
both rifles are about 11 pounds, bare/dry weight:

The Ruger No. 1 has 1.000" muzzle diameter at the 27" length (without add-on brake).
With the brake screwed on the barrel is 29",
and with all the other stuff mounted it weighs over 14 pounds.
The bolt action barrel is a little slimmer and only 23" long without the brake.
Both bare-naked rifles are same weight and length.

Doug,
Here are the pictures, the XLCs were recovered from the bison. The rifles above repose on the hairless side of the robe that came off the bison.
One XLC was shot into live bison chest broadside (50 yards), the other was shot at closer range into dead bison chest broadside (25 yards).
One GSC FN was shot into bison rump at about 100 yards. That put him down.
Second GSC FN was shot post mortem into same placement.
The first one sent the right tonsil out through the throat.
The second one did the left hemitonsillectomy.
Neither FNs nor tonsils were recovered:

No scope nor muzzle brake was removed for these pictures: Iron sights and no brake for the "shoot." Wink

Ross and I sell muzzle brakes so I'm sure it will have a brake too. The rifle weight doesn't matter for the type of hunting this is. We baited this spring and drove his side by side atv up to the spot we shoot from. We also shoot from portable benches. Ross got hit by a truck while on his atv during deer season last year so his mobility is pretty limited. He's a bear baiting fool now. Big Grin

Man oh man, that's a big boy!! Very cool Bison.

A question for you guys that have hunted them, are there places to hunt Bison that offer a real hunting experience? I'm not stirring the pot here I promise. I'd like to hunt one but want to have a hunt at it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Would be a great reason, as if I needed a reason, to acquire a Sharps!

Todd,

There are free ranging bison from Utah to Alaska and the Yukon. There are ways if you have the time and money.
Sometimes surplus animals from the KY, Land Between the Lakes herd are sold at auction to farmers and/or "game farms" in KY and TN.
I have been to a Nebraska "game farm" hunting lodge where they had over 3000 acres fenced,
and paid twice what I paid to the Kentucky farmer wanting to unload a bull bison for $1/pound live weight.
I might go to a Tennessee game farm for my next shooter. They have several thousand acres fenced there too.

You can eat all the way up to the bullet hole, and even a big, old bull is edible.
Bison robes are wonderful.
One shoulder mount was enough for me, but no limit on skulls, robes, meat!

Do a search here at AR.com, JohnTheGreek, comes to mind as an afficianado, regarding free-range bison.

Thanks for the contact RIP. I'll look him up. On the Nebraska farm you hunted with the 3000 acres, were the Bison "wild" in behavior or were they like cattle. I don't necessarily mind a fenced hunt but would like to have a hunt. I've hunted RSA ranches even for Buffalo and they were pretty damn skittish. Certainly had to work for them. Were these Bison you describe like that?

Thanks.

Rob,
I would start looking for a permit in the Delta Junction herd near Fairbanks Alaska.
I have also driven the Al-Can Highway 6 times and seen wild bison near the road 3 times, in the Yukon.
I have a file at home of wild bison hunt reports, but am in South Dakota right now.
Just farm shooting around here,
but I'll get back to this topic when I can.
Glad to hear you want a tatanka.
I need to kill a tatanka with my .395 Tatanka, now that I have the bugs worked out on it.

Todd,
The Comstock Lodge, Nebraska, bison experience:
They were very wild in behavior.
Glassed from a half mile away,
stalked and belly-crawled to within 80 yards of an opening they crossed for the shot with a 404 Jeffery and 380-grain North Fork SP.
They were elusive, wary, not tame.
In the Sand Hills of Nebraska area.
That one cost about $3500, and $500 for a half-day pheasnt hunt afterwards.
Hunt sold to me by Ray Atkinson.
It was a great experience all around.
