Now, I'm aware that the 500 A2 and the 510 Wells show negligible differences in ballistics, but are there any case geometry differences other than a (very) slight volume advantage to the A2? Some other posts hinted that the A2 rim is rebated, but I'd like to know absolutely. For all I know, both rounds have rebated rims. This all plays a part in my pipe dream scheme to join the .510 club. I really would like to produce brass from readily-available Weatherby stock....without turning the rims down. Thanks for any help you can lend. Does anybody have a photo of the two rounds juxtaposed?

they are based off the 460 weatherby. the weatherby has a .602/3 belt and a .585 (ish) rim. BOTH are rebated. look at my 500 AR if you want a 1/2 entry with no belts or rebates jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Words aren't Murder - Political assassination is MURDER Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? So, if I'm understanding things correctly, the A2, Wells, and .460 Weatherby all use the same bolt face: the "Rigby" bolt face?

Yes and No. The Wells and 500a2 are based on the .460 wby which uses a .603 rim and the Rigby is .585. Generally a Rigby bolt rim will need no work to accomodate a 500a2 or Wells. However, a Rigby extractor will need to be modified to work with a 500a2. Minor stuff but still important. A good 500a2 with the reccomended 1:15 twist is a most formidable weapon.-Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

Max spec diameters: .416 Rigby/470 Mbogo/500AR/500 Mbogo: base 0.589" rim 0.590" No rebate. 460Wby/500A2/.510 Wells: base ahead of belt: 0.582" belt: 0.603" rim: 0.579" Rebated. Real-life diameters are several thou smaller than max spec, as usual for all cartridges. The 500 Mbogo has a Rigby base and rim and is 3.000" long: same as a 470 Mbogo necked up and lengthened by .055". Bigger than all the 500's listed so far in this thread. Coming soon. ![]()

Rip, Rob and jeffe are all right, its just a little confusing. the rigby case is a spec .590 rim .. the weatherby belt is .602 or .603 but the rim is the same. the 500mbogo/500AR/510KX are all unrebated... opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Words aren't Murder - Political assassination is MURDER Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Jeffe, There you go confusing us again. The 460 Wby rim is smaller than the .416 Rigby rim by .011" max spec difference: .590 - .579 Eh?

Thanks for the excellent explanation. Really, I should have used the term "rim diameter" instead of "bolt face" to preclude any confusion about possible interference between the bolt face and a belt. While it's still up in the air, I'm considering ordering up a reamer and a barrel blank. The end result should be a Ruger No. 1 with a serious attitude problem. Gotta put a new, longer bed on my Dad's lathe first though. This blank will be too large to pass through the headstock.....but that's another story.
