My wife is an avid hunter and is not scared of whatever load she shoots out of my 30-06.

This day she decided that she wants to take a few shots with my .375 H&H. She weighs about 47 Kilos.

Unfortunatley the picture is of poor quality, which is a shame as it was take on exactely the right moment, but you can see the expression on her face when the rifle is in full recoil.

I think it is priceless!!




PS. The best is that she enjoyed it. I think she is a keeper but don't tell her that!

what is the rifle, m98, peep sights.. i think the barrel taper says "browning" but I am not sure.

couple suggestions for her shooting
1: ears go UNDER the hat
2: grip (hands) looks goos, but she should try without the sticks, and she'll have LESS felt recoil
3: she looks locked in the hips... needs to be loose in the hips, tight in the shoulder (guys, come on, don't take that out of context)
4: pull BACK with the left hand, DOWN with the right

In a nutshell, if you locks her arms, weight just SLIGHTLY forward, loose in the hips, and rock and rolls with the shot, the the utter intention to have the rifle back on target, exactly where she was aiming, instantly, she'll like it ALOT more.

Her head is up and it shouldn't be. After recoil the head should still be looking thru the sights.

I wont give any suggestions. I give her credit, and think she did fine. Everyone is a little nervous when stepping up in caliber. I bet she did better the second time.

My wife is 5'4" and she shot my 8# 358 Norma with full power 250s last week from a standing tripod. First round the head did stay down but the rifle came up and she took a step back. After a little more discussion about lean, tighter grip, etc she proceeded to rip off a quick 3 rounds as fast as she could work the bolt and aim forming a nice 5" 125yd group. She was disappointed that it didn't match her 9 shot 3" from her 7x57.

She had always wanted to hunt but never got a chance before we married 5 yrs ago. Now she is ready to go before I am. Hey getting to sleep with your hunting buddy is a nice perk.

Women and 375s don't mix.

Where can a guy get a hat like that? Is there a rifle in that picture? I need a hunting partner like that.

we try to steer clear of racist, homophobic and gender biased posts here. Personally, my wife doesn't care for my 375Imp...but she has killed a couple of deer and an elk with it...before she had her own 416 Remington built on an FN Mauser action I had laying around last year. Of course, at 5'7" and 128 pounds she handles recoil fairly well.

That said, the picture is a great one, nice lady, nice rifle. And yes, sleeping with your hunting buddy is the best go.

I've been teaching a little lady to shoot a .416 Rigby. No one has ever told her that recoil is a problem, so she doesn't worry about it. She needs to keep her head down on the stock, lean foreward

I've guided many lady clients who were GREAT with big rifles.

One of my clients was a 5 foot nothing lady who was married to a gunsmith that loved big rifles. The smallest thing he ever shot was a .375 H&H. She was pretty disappointed when he presentered her with a lowly .308 Win. So he built her a .375 and she shot it great and carried it everywhere.

Another lady client who was almost 70 when she started hunting with me was married to a guy who didn't feel recoil. She was maybe 100 pounds soaking wet and she was convinced her .30-.378 Wby. didn't kick at all... so we didn't tell her. She took several nice pigs with that rifle.

Don't under estimate the ladies. They know they're venturing into a male dominated sport so they are usually quite careful not to show fear or intimidation. On average my male clients whine (too hot, too cold, hill too steep, daylight too early, rifle too heavy, etc, etc. ) about 80% more than the female clients.

Flame me as you will, but that's the truth after 18 years and thousands of clients.

my g/f shoots a ruger 77 in a 7mm mag.... and does it very well... she also shoots my ruger #1 in 458 win mag... factory 350 gr soft points... till i get a mercury reducery in it, the 500 grs are off limits for her...

get the Barnes Bullets reloading manual and check the 50 calibre section. See 5-foot-nothing 100lbs Connie Barnes and the buffalo, elephant, etc whe got with her .500 3" NE double.

I'm guilty of the same thing. I used to get a big kick out of it. But I've seen it turn women off to shooting so much that they won't even plink with a .22 anymore. I'm just saying in general people with smaller frames, particularly women, don't feel the same way we do about high levels of recoil.

If my wife didn't ask I would not have given her the opportunity, for exactely the reason that you mention. I love her and I love it that she enjoys the shooting and hunting sports as much as I do and would do anything to prevent her from getting her "turned off" from it.

She was not in pain! It was her first shot with anything bigger than a 30-06 and she was not sure what to expect. Hence the expression.

Right after she begged me too shoot more as I had taken only a few test loads not anticipating that she would want to shoot with the .375 too.

Just last night she was asking me when we can go to the range again to shoot my .375.

You are by no means a wife beater! Sounds like you have a special one! My wife would by no means ever shoot a 375, nor would I ask her to, just as she would never ask me to wear an apron. Hopefully you and her put it all together and get her something to hang on the wall with it. You are one of the lucky few!

My ex-wife wasn't a shooter except for .22s. Now my daughter! By the time she was twelve, liked to shoot my .45acp (loaded her own ammo, too) and occasionally my S&W .44 Mag...she liked how it "bounced."
Oh, by the way, she's 5'4", size 3, was head of the drug squad here in town, and carried a compact Glock .40 when on duty.

All that picture shows is a cute little girl flinching before the gun goes off. Nice ... except for the nonfunctional use of hearing protection merely as a hat shaper. That is plumb silly. She might not be so afraid of pulling the trigger if the noise didn't hurt her ears so much.

For those who do, the men they are with are extremely lucky. Most of the time women get turned off by these sorts of things. But obviously bullet .375'S wife isn't what way. Great! RIP made a great observation in that the gun has not gone off yet and no pain has been captured in the picture. Lots of other good points have been made as well. I meant no discord with anyone, I just think that, unless they want to, smaller framed people are more likely to be turned off by high levels of recoil than folks of bigger stature.

By the way, my wife shoots a 300 RUM. She told me she wanted another rifle and I sat down with her and a ballistics chart. I explained that the farther she goes down the list, the more recoil there would be involved. She picked the 300 on her own, I think that it was a good way to go. We've put a lightweight MPI stock on it with a great muzzle break. It weighs 7.5 lbs with scope, kicks like a 243, and is as flat as a, well, 300 rum. You are so very right, nothing beats a good looking woman for your hunting partner.

Heck, I probably had my eyes closed the first time I pulled the trigger on a 500 Nitro Express. Anticipation can be much worse then the actual event. Or, it can be worse.

Reminds me of the time when a friend came over with his wife.

We used to shoot clays togather with him years ago, and I thought I will get him to try the 577 T. Rex.

Anyway, he is a big guy, about 6 foot 4, and weighs over 200 pounds.

His wife is a lovely lady, who is about 5 foot 5 and weighs about 110 pounds!

"John, here, I have rifle for you to shoot!" I said.
"Great, what caliber is it?"
"577"
"OH NO! I am NOT shooting that bloody thing!"

"Oh go on darling, try it once!" said his wife.

"YOU try it and see how hard it kicks" he answered.

Looking at me, his wife asked "can I try one?"

"Of course you can. I will get a box of ammo" I said.

I usually keep one reduced charge round in every box of ammo, just in case I have to shoot it.

I got the ammo, loaded a reduced round and gave it to his wife to shoot.

She fired the gun, and said "it is not THAT bad darling. You really should try it"

"Alright! But you are not getting a different box of ammo. I will shoot one from this one" he said.

"You better hold it properly, not like a skeet shooter, otherwise it will fly out of your hands" I told him.

He loaded a round and fired it. The rifle flew out his hands and landed on the floor, his thump was bleeding and him screaming "BASTARDS! BOTH OF YOU, BASTARDS"

We called him The Little Sissy after that.

I remember reading a story in one of the gun mags years ago about recoil and the writer mentioning that at the Norma factory their QC person that test fired rounds from all of their lots of ammo, including .460 Wby, was a little bitty woman in her 60's. I recall the point of the story being that she was doing it using standard rifles and without any special recoil protection or anything and that people of smaller body mass may be less affected by recoil.

that is one cruel thing. I admire that in a man when handled that well

It doesn't appear in the picture that your wife has touched that rifle off as yet, notice the lack of recoil if you will. She is cute though.

This topic is a little old, but I can't seem to find a better place to post this clip. The title says it's a 30-06, but I figure she's shooting a 12 gauge. I also think that she didn't intend to fire the second and third shots. Lucky the plug was still in the gun and it could only hold three rounds. I got a feeling it wasn't her idea to shoot it either.

Yeah, I think it's a shotgun. It does remind me of a similar incident with my first wife. We were going deer hunting together for the first time and she had never shot anything bigger than a 22. So I took her to a range, gave her a semiauto Remington 740 30-06, and boom! boom! simultaneously. She handed the rifle back and that was the last time she fired one.

That is a shotgun, not a .30-06. In either case, it is not relevant to the topic of big bore rifles.

I thought this post had been pulled back in August. At least hoped my part in it had. How embarrassing, all over again. My apologies again to all of you. My niece, who will be 14 soon (5'4" and 107lbs) did get a nice 4-point muley buck Saturday afternoon with the little Ruger 243 Mannlicher stocked carbine I got her. One shot, 160 yds, died in his tracks. One proud Uncle Rich here.
