Here is the new Kevlar stock on the 404 Jeffery. This replaces the cross-grained-through-the-grip-marble-cake wood! May CZ never encounter another of those! This 404 Jeffery is special. The standard CZ box is ideal for the 404 Jeffery cartridge geometry. Though the 3.8" box is longer than needed for the 3.6" cartridge, it is no hindrance. Room to spare. It holds 5 down in the box, with room enough to surf the 6th cartridge off the top of the box when the bolt is closed. No fumbling to make this 404 a "Six-Shooter." It also feeds everything perfectly, even North Fork FP and CUP Point and Soft Point bullets. From the ugliest Flat Nose to the prettiest Round Nose or Spitzer: Hungry for more! 25" barrel of same contour that CZ uses on .375, .416, and .458 standard offerings. However, this barrel is a 1:10" TWIST button-rifled McGowen, from the first batch of factory-produced Safari Classic 404 Jeffery. It was externally contoured same as the hammer-forged CZECH barrels. It weighs 9 pounds and 1 ounce, dry weight. Lighter than a factory M70 Classic Winchester .416 RemMag in walnut stock. This rifle balances on the front action screw with this stock. It lost a half pound in going from butt-heavy American walnut to Kevlar. My bitch "Jackie" highly approves. She also understands that shortening the barrel from 25" to 23" would get it under 9 pounds, but would also spoil the perfect balance, unless some useless lead was added to the forearm :

That's a good looking set-up!! Did CZ charge you for the swap? You have a boat dock in your yard?

No charge from CZ. They kept the evidence in the cracked wood stock. I hope to never have another stock break off at the grip. No way to fix "marble grip." No boat dock, just a rotting WOOD deck. I replace the boards in it myself. Have not found any Kevlar decking yet. I have a CZ .416 Rigby in Kevlar. It weighs 8#15oz, same 25" barrel. It is a 4-shooter instead of a 6-shooter. Must be the barrel band sling base on the 404 Jeffery weighs 2 ounces +/- any variation in the McGowen steel versus the Czech steel barrels. Of note: CZ did no bedding with epoxy on this 404 Jeffery Kevlar. Just a drop-in. They did remove and discard the forearm sling base screw, and did not put a filler screw in the hole. Lack of glass bedding: Oh well, the .416 Rigby shot O.K. like that. Beds itself in the alloy bedding block? Will do my own bedding if any problems. This rifle is proof that the only weight difference between a true magnum action and a standard action is 1/2-pound in the completed rifle. Add synthetic stock and light enough barrrel, and the magnum can be lighter than the wood-stocked standard, just as well balanced, and more durable and weather-resistant. The choice between "Kevlar" with full bedding block vs. walnut was a no-brainer for me.

Dentist, Yes, it is a drop-in fit for the standard .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, and .458 WM/Lott ... all with the same standard contour barrel from Czechland. Happily, CZ-USA made this 404 Jeffery with that same contour machined onto the McGowen barrel. I have 3 of those Kevlar stocks. Only 12 more to go. Then to see if they can be modified to fit Magnum Mauser, Dakota African, BBK-02, and most challenging of all, the Ruger RSM. Here is how it looks on a standard .416 Rigby, dry rifle weight 8#15oz: CZ's better alternative, only 2 lbs. 10 oz., what RSM owners can only dream of: True drop-in fit on a .416 Rigby: True drop-in accuracy, with the first load tried, in the rain:

Good idea. I added the pics of the .416 Rigby above, again, just to beat this dead wooden horse some more.

Those plastic stocks are sure ugly but I suppose they work. I have a 458 Lott from CZ and it is still unfired and new in he box. I wrote to CZ and they asked me to send it to them before I fired it as they would add cross bolts and glass bedding at no charge! I bought the rifle with the fancy stock but it still looks like it was inletted and checkered with a chain saw!!! By the way, I like your dog!!!! He is guarding the house and the rifle.

bookman, My "Jackie Russell" terrier is a female. She appreciates your appreciation of her vigilance, if not her sex. I now have all my CZ's crossbolted and glass bedded with pillars, at my own expense. Glad I got one freebie out of CZ. Even my Lux Euro-hogback stocks have been redone, with crossbolts fore and aft of the magazine well, in addition to the original crossbolt behind the tang, that came standard. They all have real pillars now too, instead of the loose action spacers around the screws. I was never aware they were redoing the early Safari Classics for free. That is a good deal, take advantage of it. I am sure they will be watching the grain in the grip more carefully too.

Sometimes functionality IS beauty. A broken pretty stock is ugly.
