I was wondering what folks think of the 45-70 threads and ensuing posts.....So I made up this poll

Question:
If there was a special forum just for the 45-70 then:.......check the most likely

Choices:
Boomstick would never be heard from again
A few folks would be in pig heaven
all of us would be happy to not be tempted to read them
No more Cape Buffalo would ever again be wounded by a 45-70
Peace would finally come to the middle east!

I don't agree with the assumption being made here ... that a 45/70 Forum on AR is desirable for any reason. There aren't enough "lively" discussions related to the 45/70 to lessen the value of the existing Big Bore Forum.

Ban posts on the 45-70 from the big bore forum, listen to boomstick whine for a couple weeks, and then he can tell everyone on the medium bore forum (or where ever) what a great round it is. boohoo

The 45-70 is not a big bore, it's a low power catridge with a bullet of large diameter. stir

No, we don't. There are already too many forums with little activity.

boom stick should ask most of his .45-70 questions on the 'Lever action' forum, where they would be met with FAR more enthusiasm and interest and be more topical.

There is one already.

It's in the "Other Topics" Section, right underneath "Recipes for Hunters".

After writing a lengthy post on this, most delicate of subjects, I found it in best interest to erase it all, and just say: if it will help differentiate the .45-70 posts from the posts about real DG rifles, then I'm all for them having their own place to gather, and discuss their rimfire-like ballistics.

So far as I can tell from the forum heading this is not a dangerous game rifle forum. So a .577 Snider qualifies.
So how would a Contender carbine in .44 Magnum look dressed up with NECG banded front sight with an express open sight? Oops ...forgot the banded front swivel mount.
And then there are those .46 Extra long rimfire Ballards that are so tough to load for.

I have to agree about the name of the forum. If this is not a big bore forum then lets name it DG rifle forum. Not that that would end the debate because all DG is not in Africa. Maybe the discussion of DG rifles should only take place in the Africa forums and leave this for all big bore shooters regardless of game hunted or where its huntied. Last but not least, this is america and if you don't want to read a post about the 45-70 or 500 S&W, you sure don't have to. Don't click on it if its irritating to you.

If its all in good fun then pardon my rant. Smiler

Big Grin If the cartridge 's factory designation begines with "450", or "458" they are! If they begine with "45" they are big pistol cartridges, and best left to deer hunting in woods!

I agree, however, it doesn't need a special forum, if you don't want to read about the old INDIAN KILLER, then pass right on by a string that contains mention of it!beer

I love my 45-70s and have killed alot of things with them. I know I will never be able to hunt Africa DG. If/when I save enough for a bear hunt, I would take a 45-70....or my bow!
But I agree that a 45-70 forum wouldn't get that much business. I would love a "real" big bore...but I don't know what I would shoot with it. I have taken prairie dogs with my 45-70...but no buffalo yet.

I for one find it incredibly interesting just how much discussion a guy who admittedly has never owned a Big Bore can generate. Admittedly, Boomstick seems to be a nice guy, but spending endless amounts of time dreaming up wildcats he has no intention of ever building seems pretty odd to me. The 45-70 is a fun cardtridge and yes it is a big BORE but jeesh what a waste of time. Boomstick needs to buy a real gun and learn how to shoot it. If it were legal we should take up a collection just to end his virginity!!!!-Rob

Boomie- Read the mail! You seem to be a nice guy and certainly enthusiastic, but drop the "I am working on it crap" There are alot of guys on this site who probably REALLY can't afford a high priced big bore but SOMEHOW find the money and do it! I think you really need to do something serious about your credibility. GO BUY A REAL BIG BORE! SELL YOUR 45-70, your PORN collection etc. Buy beer instead of scotch etc. Figure it out for god sakes! Otherwise your going to wind up a wannabe forever! Just some sound advice from a guy who also once couldn't afford much of anything!-Rob

Actually no, this isn't America, it's a web site hosted by the United Arab Emirates, and AR is an international forum.

Anyhow, I agree with George, we have too many forums and I'd be glad to see 1/2 of them go.

As far as the 45-70, it's like a 500cc moped shocker

Paul, I think the .45-70 exceeds the speed of the 50cc moped (haven't seen a 500cc moped) by all of 25 fps, maybe 50 fps.

the 45-70 does not need any defending though it does get plenty of ridicule...

it is the most popular big bore in america for many reasons and for that alone could merrit its own board.

regarding the moped...

here i say the 45-70 is like having a fat girlfriend or a moped...they are fun to ride but you dont want your friends to catch you on one... rotflmo

go to any BP matches and badmouth the 45-70...then prepare for a discussion about how the indians felt about them, and the bison...two groups that are able to comment based on personal experience about the lack of killing/stopping power. The 45-70 appeared on the plains in 1874...eight years later both of the afore-mentioned groups had been decimated.

HogKiller and I were talking last night. It renewed my "need" for a 1886 in a 45-90 or 50-110. A 45-70 would be great for serious target shooting. But a 50-110 for hunting bear would be great!
