new_guy470 Cast Bullet (with GC)???
Anyone know where to find this cast bullet:
> 500gr (not 440 or 540 etc...)
> 470 bullets (476)
> WITH gas checks?
Sorry to be so specific, but I've searched the forum and can't find any direction for what I'm looking for.

jeffeossoI haven't, thought I would like it.
www.neihandtools.com will make you that mold, wayne doudna
www.customcastbullets.com will cast them for you, by the 100s, and I'll go in with you on the mold.
hech, i don't care if it was 540gr, if it was EXACTLY the same shape as a woodleigh 500gr, though it could be shorter in the shank.
Actually, thinking about it.. if you to a 500gr woodleigh, reduced the diameter a hair, had 2 driving bands (one you crimp just behind and one at the heel of the bullet) with a GC,, that weighed 500grs, it would KCIKASS!!

Jeffe - you got a deal.
Wayne is who I've used in the past. He and I actually discussed this mold and him making some bullets with it yesterday afternoon.
I'll call NEI or you can... you're probably better versed in what "we" want, so maybe you should call.
Either way we can ship the mold to Wayne and he'll make us the bullets.
My only specific requests were for:
1) accurate weight (500g)
2) with the proper alloy
3) and with the gas checks.
Call me and we'll work out the details.
Anyone else want in???
We can "cost-average" this mold down a bit.

mstarlingGuys,
I make a 500 grain bullet for the .470 NE. It is a FPGC projectile. Projectile has a big meplate. The mould was made by Ballisti-Cast who is the successor to H&G. Their mold number is 1431 as seen on the last page of their design list:
Last page of design list I cast them in wheel weights. Actual weight is ~501.9 gr with gascheck and NRA formula Alox/Beeswax lube. They regulate in Searcy rifles at 42 to 45 grains of XMR 5744 in the 1500-1600 fps range.
I'll charge about about what Wayne charges per 100 and the same as Mt Baldy Bullets ...
Mt. Baldy's price listLooks like $33/100. I don't get the discounts these fellas gets on alloy, so my larger quantity price has a 15% discount.
I can usually ship in a week. Can provide sample packs for the cost of shipping. Am currently short of gaschecks so I'll have to order some if you are interested.
Hope the shameless self promotion is not objectionable.

jeffeossoHowdy Mike,
Thanks for the offer, and the shameless plug!!! I'll call NewGuy to tomorrow and talk with him on this.
what I would like(lower left hand corner of the link below) is the NEI 359a (at least it LOOKS like 359a) reworked to .475, with a gc, as it's 540 in a .505 weight. Done to B20-22 or so, with a GC
http://www.neihandtools.com/catpages/mold_pg13.htmI don't mind FN bullets, from all practical perspectives.. except looks

I would like to order 600 pieces. Please advise as to shipping cost and how to send payment. Thank you.

mstarlingTypically wheel weights will harden to 12-14 bhn over 10 days or so after they are cast. If they are heat treated they start out harder instantantly, but get softer over time. So far I have seen no evidence of metal fouling as a result of the alloy.
500 Grains ... pm sent.
My e-mail is in my Profile. Glad to send samples of 20 for testing to those that need them. Will understand cost of shipping samples cheapest way by post tomorrow. (I suspect it to be $6 or less.)

Knifemaker,
http://www.mstarling.com Mike, have you fired your bullets with full powered loads and if so, did they lead the barrel
thanks

mstarlingGi,
I haven't done that. Thought that it would be difficult to get the bore residence time. BUT if one started with something like 85 gr of RL-15 and 5 grains of dacron, one might come close ... though it would not have the recoil of a 500 gr Woodleigh.
The alloy and the lube should make it, but not a lot more. Would have to go to Felix lube for much heigher velocity.
I would not propose a cast bullet as a replacement for a Woodleigh at full velocity as they'll tend to shatter on impact in comparison to the Woodleigh. At 1600 fps the big flat point kills deer and pigs nicely thanks.
There would, however, be value in getting the velocity up as they are pretty tame to shoot for practice. Will try it and see what happens.

jeffeossoJust talked to Joel at NEI.
he can make us a 3 or 4 (depending on size) mold, with cherry cost, for 200 to 240, with a couple week turn around.
this will be a 500gr, driving banded, GC, cast bullet with a woodleigh(like) nose.
thinking b20 or so, it would be excellent at 2200
who's in?
jeffe

boom stickel jeffe...
the mold you want to make is a round nose???
would there be a problem feeding mstarlings in the 470 a.r.?
please advise i would like to shoot some good cast booolits when i am up and running
05 July 2006, 23:00
jeffeossoBoom,
I am sure Mike makes excellent bullets. The issue we are trying to get around is the woodleigh shape, and shooting in doubles and in the 470AR... RNs feed very well, so do FP if the smith does his part. just wanted a woodliegh like GC 500gr bullet.

458LottfanCast performance Bullets offered to resize some gas checked lead bullets down for my brothers .470NE double rifle. I don't think he has ordered them yet but the people there are great to work with!
Thier info is:

I purchased some of these bellets from MSTARLING, the shoot good i used 44- 4577 powder number from memory. they shoot low at 50 yards but group well.
When I get the chance I will load some with full nitro charge, they are gas check, should be OK

Norman ConquestJeff,Are we talking about a group buy on NEI moulding blocks? How many do we need to get a price break?I currently cast a 470,500G. G.C. with flat nose, but the RN interests me.
Never mistake motion for action.
06 July 2006, 07:13
MJinesJeffe,
Would these work in my .470 NE? If so, count me in. I need something to reduce the reloading cost for plinking.
Mike
[By the way, can you PM me the email address we discussed. Thanks.]

470 MbogoHi Gents,
I would be interested in a mold for gas check .475 bullets also.
A question for Mike. Have you tried dropping your bullets from thew mold into a 5 gallon bucket of water. This will harden the bullets to around 20 on the brinell scale.
Take good care,
Dave

jeffeossoWas wanting to see if ya'll wanted to go in on the woodleike (heh, good pun) mold, for your stuff... we can send off to custom cast bullets for casting!
Mike, the intention is for shooting in doubles, the 470mbogo (hey dave, you got email) and the 470 AR

MJinesCount me in. Midway is now sending me birthday cards for all the Woodleighs I have purchased from them. Jeffe, let me know what I need to do to settle up.

06 July 2006, 07:55
new_guyThat's the idea Mike - come up with a good lead plinker that hopefully shoots like, but costs less than the $1.00/ea woodleighs.
All in all, looks like 4 of us are in jeffe - these custom molded bullets are getting down-right affordable.
Now, wonder how long it will take Wayne to cast a few hundred for everyone???
I'll call Wayne tomorrow and let him know the mold is coming and to get the lead warmed up!
06 July 2006, 08:05
jeffeossoLooks like 4 guys so far...
the good mold is 240 (including cherry fee)
so, 60 bucks each..
Dave,
I'll have you a "box" when you get here!!

06 July 2006, 08:10
boom stickwhat kind of cost are we talking about???
i like the flat nose but if i want to shoot woodleighs in the future i ass-u-me ( more me than u ) they would have the same trajectory. since north fork dont make softs it is a default ( a good one ) i inquired with alaska bulletworks and they said they would make 470s if the demand was there...is anyone interested in alaska bulletworks softs???

double rifle tastes on a red ryder budget boom stick

boom sticki typed too slow...
i could do $50 next payday...
06 July 2006, 08:21
MJinesJeffe,
PM your address and I will get you a check. This is for one mold that someone will hold on to -- is that the idea?

Exactly, Wayne Doudna
http://www.customcastbullets.com/ will have the mold.

.366torque500 grains of a combo of lead and wheel weights. That will be a very penetrating load. I don't think you'll recover any bullets to view the results.
SOUNDS LIKE FUN!!!
