Farmer John,
I know Bertram makes the brass and I think Hornberer of Germany does also. Light loads of smokeless is very possible as well as duplex and straight black powder.

Rich, I'll swap it straight up for your New Searcy and the whole trip in a few days..

I just noticed a typo I did. That case is 2 3/4"(2.81") not 2 3/8".
Yes you can use Ar2208/varget in it with wads or dacron for filler.
There's a good thread on it at NE.

Actually the case length is 2 13/16 to beat a dead horse. As to shooting this caliber I do and very much like it. I've had a Manton hammer top lever double for about 25 years, it was my first. I've tried shooting black in it with no great luck, couldn't get enough velocity to bring the barrels together. The load Im using now is with IMR 4198 as per Ross Seyfieds 40% formula and I'm getting 2" L&R groups at 50 yds. Get a copy of Handloader #219, Oct-Nov 2002 for his article "Loading the 500 Express", tells you everything you need to know. I'm getting 1775 fps using a 370 gr hollow point and BELL brass, really slams deer and pigs.
Best.

Gents:
Ross' 40% formula will work with any black powder express round. I learned this by trial and error and read Ross' work after a summer of shooting. Just make sure the bullet if of the correct weight and diameter.
Cheers,
Cal

For now I need few to check wildcatting
idea,being to make a rimmed 585HE, that my 585
dies work with also, and work easiest in break
and falling block actions.
I am checking with Jamison as maybe he get cases
of the line before necking and trimming, when he
makes a run.ED

Ed, hate to bust your bubble, but that round was "invented" about 122 years ago .. some call it the 577NE .. only difference would actually be the tiniest difference in rim and case head..

577 E
leads to the
577 NE
leads to the (branches to trex/nyati cases)
577/500
leads to the
505 gibbs
leads to the (belted)
577 BME (gibbs case) / 585 HE nyati case
and putting a rim back on it goes full circle ..

The 577-500 has a base .015" smaller than
577NE, and as base case for my Rimless 585HE it would
be another .011" smaller, so that my 585HE dies
will work. I got a bunch of the dies,
and a big bunch more being made and with a
Rimless 585HE, Belted 585HE, and 585 Short HE, that makes
3 cartridges that my die set will work for.
Only reason I'm doing Rimmed is we and others here
are encouraging FBW to make one last big run of the
MODEL Ls. WE hope they will.

Mike send me 3 of each, and whatever costs.
I'll PM you my address.ED

Ed, 577 NE dies are 165 from ch4d, and 577/500 can be made from 577 NE ... casehead is smaller, rim is smaller .. LOL, i remember when you kinda complained at me for making the 550 flanged off that case rather than the 475?

Mike, the bertram stuff is as new as it was, unfired, good primer hole lineup ...

I know it's virgin brass. I finally sent off castings and fire formed cases to CH4D to have dies made for it.

And just for shitz and giggles I sent a note to Jamison asking about brass for it and when they migh do another run.

Heree's the email I just got back this am from Jamison;
"I am sorry, but it is not on our production list as yet. We are adding new cases as often as possible but it takes time to develop them so we are not promising them in the near future. I will but this in our inquiry book and, if we do start production on them, I will let you know."

I asked then only about the 577/500 3 1/8.

Mike--Cases got here, sectioned one of each.
Bertram has better corner radius than Kynoch.
Bertram longest being closest to spec 3.125"
length. And primer pocket is centered.
I'll work them out more length. My 585 dies work.
585 Rimmed HE straight case will work
great in the FBW falling block and we locals
and guys on forums, working to get some made.
Now that I know Bruces are ok we'll get
in volumne from him.

Payment goes out to you tomorrow.

jeffe-I only mentioned using 475s as it could make
a straight 550 flanged, in keeping with the straight
case concept of Neal's 550 MAG.No matter to me.Ed
