Morning all,

I am a lover of all pre-war rifles but have concentrated on collecting doubles, I do not know much about the bolt action market prices so am looking for a bit of guidance, I can pick up a very rare original 500 Jeffery’s , apparently one of only 26 ever made? Condition is excellent, rifling above 90% of proof and still has the original case as well,
What should I be looking to pay for such a piece?

I think that is high. You might try to track down Dr. Alf Smith, he has a couple. And I have Jon Speed's email somewhere if you want it.

Very rare rifles of some historical significance can go for some crazy money. When one considers what pre-war Rigby-built 416 Rigby rifles go for, along with what new ones go for, the price does not seem that bad. I wonder how fast it would sell at an SCI or DSC convention at this price? If you do buy it, I'm sure everyone here on AR would love to see pics!!!

Delima, If I owned it I would be asking at least $35,000 depending on what I paid for it, but if you want one then you might oughta pay his price and be done with it..Its one of those deals wherein if you have to ask!! They are rare as hens teeth..condition is extremely important, as is its bonifideeeee..but chances are you will never see another one in that caliber on the market. I had one in a 404 Jefferys some years ago and I sure liked it, and it had a 27 inch original barrel..Wish I had kept that one.

You can have this one from 1912 for a fraction of the figures being thrown around here:

45K sounds pretty fair to me. I saw an orginal Rigby 416 sell for close to 38K last year, and they are a dime a dozen compared to the Jeffery Rifles in 500J. I let a original Shuler rifle slip by 2 years ago for 8K ...and I regret it everyday. if you have the "jack" then I think it would be a buy...I bet you will get your price for it in 20 years...

That sounds high to me too. It strikes me that there was one of these on GI for $36,500 in the last couple years. I called on the gun (Morris Hallowell maybe?) and was going to go see it. It sold within a couple days of being listed.

Maybe it's worth it as an investment piece - Dunno, I buy guns to use them!

Must have missed the one on Morris site.. I do not think I have ever seen one in person in 20 years of gun buying, and trading. I use to go to Beinfeld and Tulsa every year and I have seen more than a few original Rigbys, a few nice orginal WR's, and Jeffery bolt guns but not one of the 500's...of course one of 26 is rare enough...good luck on the "buy"...

There was a Laubser copy of this rifle recently for sale on Champlin's and that went for about 20,000.
There was also a claim of a "refurbished" original 500 Jeffery on the same site but I could not verify if it's Jeffery SN# was in fact one of the original 500's.

Casey Lewis in SA has the full list of Serial numbers of the original 21 rifles and it includes the Mauser numbers that match the Jeffery numbers.

My rifle is number 5 of the original 21 and I have copies of the original ledger entries for this gun from Abercrombie and Fitch as this particular gun was originally imported into the USA directly from Jeffery.

What a wonderful rifle

Chuck

Justin,
I saw the rifle you're talking about in December. It has been reblued and restocked but as I understand it the original stock is available. What makes it especially rare is that it's one of two engraved examples, the other one being Fletch's rifle.

.500 Jeffery's are so rare that one can ask for them basically whatever one wants and it's still guaranteed to sell. Personally, the rifle is altogether too massive and ungainly and it's not something I'd care to own, but rare it certainly is. It should keep value well.
