+2, shooting a buffalo eating hay at a concrete waterhole. Not the greatest way to depict "dangerous game" hunting.

RIPBTW, was that not a very poor arrow shot to the brisket area of the cape buffalo at the waterhole, from an elevated stand?
Hit very low.
Might have gotten a tiny bit of lung on one side, or might have just glanced off overlapping ribs and sliced some brisket meat before it was BBQ-ed.
Followup rifle finisher: Yes, it was a spine shot that buckled the buff's legs under him as he ran by.
Zero bullet impact effect seen there, just an electrical disconnection of impulses to legs, and collapsing legs.
A .375 H&H in the same spot would have done exactly the same thing.
I have seen a lot more reaction from the bullet impact of a 500 Mbogo on a cape buffalo.
And before that a .416 Rigby did the same thing, with same shot placement.
Both times a shot through the onside shoulder and through the heart, both times the cape buffalo launched upwards like a bucking rodeo bull, ran less than 50 yards on three legs, and died.
I have also finished off a water buffalo with a .375 H&H neck shot after a chest shot with 460 Wby just made it sick.
Again, a .416 Rigby did the same thing on another water buffalo, but the second shot to neck was done with the same.416 Rigby in that case.

The way I've seen it.
The arrow hit was a shit.
Just judging from the amount of dust the the first shot from the double was a total miss.
The second shot through the bush from the double was a possible hit.
Third shot through the bush, (from someone not in the picture) who knows.
Fourth shot to the spine, what more do you need to say???
Thought not legal and inhumane, but the old 300gr. RN from .338 Winchester would do the same.
The only positive was that the bloke with the .550" waited for a clear view shot.

shakariThe guy with the .550 is my good friend Jason van Aarde and is (IMO) one of the best PHs of his generation...... Frankly, I'd have expected nothing less than him of him than taking the perfect shot at just the right time.

Nothing like a high shoulder/spine shot to drop any animal and anything with a half decent sized bullet will do that at that range.

Not that dramatic HK, it was not lifted off it's feet, its legs collapsed from a spine shot, a good example of why the good hunters of old and new who have done enough shooting on animals of any kind always advocate through the shoulder not behind and keep that shot up high. Look for the shoulder bone blowing apart the major blood vessels to the brain, not the heart/lungs where big animals will often run a mile.

You are 100% correct. The nervous system (spinal cord or brain) needs to be incapacitated by a direct hit or a hydraulic effect for the animal to drop on the spot.
The finishing shot was from the textbook. Perfectly timmed, perfectly placed.
