Both are very nice blanks but I think I prefer the top one. Fred DRSS Member

The top blank has a excellant layout. I would not use the bottom blank. It has a "weak toe".

top one is a decent blank, bottom one should be cut into a 2 piece stock you can do far better www.hunterbid.com opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? It is hard to tell from the picture but it looks lie the lower blanks grain is not as straight through the fore arm as is the upper blank. The lower one may cause uneven pressure on the barrel as it drys. 465H&H

One more vote for the top blank.....nice strong straight grain and it looks like a "Lott" stock. Bottom could be used for a lighter rifle or a 2 piece as was suggested. Gary DRSS NRA Lifer SCI DSC

B weak toe, he means after blank is cut and finished, the grain at the toe will be at about 90 degrees to the buttplate . There will be such a short distance of straight grain across this area that it could break(split) very easily. Example, crosscut a very short piece off of a board, say one inch long and see how easily you can snap it with just your fingers. JJK

Save the lower one for a Ruger #1 or a shotgun. It's nice looking but the top one looks like a nice strong piece of wood. -+-+- "If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun." - The Dalai Lama

For a Lott, go w/ the top blank. IMO there is too much figure in the bottom one at the pistol grip area. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

I'm inclined towards the top one, but just to be sure I'd want to put my nose closer to look at the pores for grain flow, and not just the color lines. Is the bottom one black walnut? Andy E

I don't know what type of wood it is.I'll have to ask and find out.

The toe will break very easily and the wrist has too much North and South grain for a big bore. As stated earlier cut it into.Would make a very nice two piece. My vote is for # 1 and I think it will look mucy better than it alredy does once it is turned.

Holy Shit! I cannot believe no asked about the grain flow of the bottom blank. More to the point...what does the grain look like at the back of the blank. If it is running north and south it does NOT have a "weak toe". Further, it looks like the bottom blank can be reversed. Without knowing all the details of the blank cutting it into a 2 pc blank is a bad move. OYA, how dense and how heavy are these two???? Both of those two questions are just as prevalent as the layout. And before you lay off on me, I worked for Winchesters custom shop turning wood for years. I love my Avatar Too Fellas.

I was going to say, flip the drawing upside down on the bottom one and see how it lays out. Yep, the bottom blank looks like it could be laid out upside down. They both appear to be quarter sawn (which is my preference, but IMO makes little difference if bedded properly). I like the top stock better for color, though. Stock wood is a very personal choice...choose the one YOU like, Shootaway!
