I just heard that Ruger and Hornady are teaming up again next year to offer a .416 Ruger in the new Hawkeye rifle. Everything I have read about the .375 Ruger has been positive and the .416 sounds like another good addition

the 416 ruger might be more popular than the 375...

yes a birdie has chirped that song to us...what are your sources???

the bigger niche is the 416 and it will be easier to do the 395, 411 and 423 off this case.

there might be an argument that this could be the best modern true big bore NON WILDCAT OR PROPRIETARY cart. it will be better than the 458 win mag 416 rem mag ect. imho. a 338 ruger and 416 ruger would be an awesome combo

After playing with my new 375 Hawkeye for several days now, I'd be first in line for a 416 Ruger and a 9.3x62 Hawkeye. dancing

I was looking at a 416 ruger wildcat reamer but with this data I'm holding out for the factory version.

It should duplicate the 416 Rem mag and all I have to do is desecrate a 7MM mag.....after all this is what the 7-mag was made for!

z-hat should have a 416 reamer and sells chambered barrels...you can buy the barrel and skip the reamer...if it is not a simple neck up just re-rechamber later...buy a 375 and have a switch barrel in 338, 375 and 416

i am with you on the 400 thing...i already named it the 400 pondoro/410 ruger...it will exceed the 450-400

the 416 will just make it easier to neck brass. restamp the 6 with a 0 for a 410 ruger (410 is what dia hornady is making the bullets so the older 408 bores dont explode)

cheap to shoot...

My friend, White bison, are shoot'in his 416 Newton these days. That's almost the exact same round.
I think this must be a perfect 416. A 416 Taylor without any belt, and slightly bigger volume and potential in velosity. And most of all; with a standard lenght action!! Wink

I have wrote to Steve Hornady, about the Newton cartridges a while ago, and they was thinking of producing something like that. And then the 375 Ruger apeared.... I think this might have something to do with each other, but thats my thoughts. Anyway, I think it's great!! thumb

Hi All: Yes, I had built a .416 Newton...after reading my vintage wildcat book by Dick Simmons...he told of
of a .35 newton necked up to .375 that beat the .375 H&H all to hell. I discussed this issue some
time ago with Hornady...as I had decided to neck a .35 Newton up to .416, instead of .375.
However, I can't say for sure...but its quite a coincidence that Hornady came up with the .375 Ruger,
which is oh so much, like "Rifle" Magazine said in a recent issue...most like a .35 Newton necked
up to .375!!!! Do you believe in coincidences? Not me.

However, it gets more interesting...like .460 Weatherby says...my .416 Newton is near an unbelted
(are you listening boom stick..unbelted) .416 Taylor, slightly better I think (haven't run lots of
tests yet). But it will be at least a .416 Taylor with a slighly better case.

Further, Midway, Graf & Buffalo Arms has the New Newton Brass listed to be made by Jamison. It's
supposed to be out in mid-April...not too far down the road. There will be .256, .30 & .35 Newton.
Neck the .35 Newton up to .416 & you have a .416 Newton. Hornady made me .416 Newton dies that are
perfect. Can also use .338 WinMag Brass...the belt fits in the chamber, belt flattens a bit & .338
case blows out to .416 Newton.

Since New Newton brass will soon be available, I can use it in my .280 Newton (.30 Newton necked
down to 7mm), also my original .30 Newton that beats my .300 Weatherby with a shorter case, and
of course,my pride & joy...my .416 Newton.

Aloha, Y'All

Tom

ps. Midway's Jamison Newton Brass is listed on their web site

white bison,
I also dont believe in coincidences. Arthur Langsford showed Ruger his 17cals on 22RF and 22Mag cases sometime in the early to mid 70's trying to get them to supply actions for his Myra cartridges. Great ideas never die ... they just take time to emerge Big Grin
Cheers...

.416 would be pretty easy to neck up to .458.
Any thoughts as to how fast you could drive a 500 grain bullet?

the 458 would be what about close to 110 grains of capacity??? the 375 being a smidge over 101 grains...the issue is the need to blow out the body more and having a sub 20 thou shoulder...not a big deal imho but might as well go with a long loaded 458 win, lott or the near perfection and cheap 458 a.r.

the 416 will have lots of merrit as a factory cart imho

I have a 416 Ruger on a FN Comm. action, Lothar Walthar barrel, reciever sight, barrel band front sight and barrel swivel, and I am chopping on a piece of very hard, although, not very colorful French walnut thats been lying around the shop for about umpteen jillion years because nobody ever wanted it, but it is going to be very nice as it seems the more I whittle the more better it gets!! I have not ordered dies or ammo as yet. Its an easy conversion and I am about to start with the 404 Ruger. Much easier to get this one to feed than the Jefferys. I will probably sell the 416 and keep the 404, who knows.

dancing Doing the happy dance!

There goes another 7 Mag! The only problem is my Ruger is stainless with a synthetic stock. It may be sacrilegious but I'm going to do it.

Unless of course Ruger comes out with the 404 Ruger.

If you all recall I let out the information regarding Hornady's entry into the DG ammo market. So my source seems to know what's coming. The 416 Ruger is coming in the 2008 catalog wether we see guns and ammo at that time is questionable. Another interesting comment made to me was that these "new calibers" are several years in the planning stages.

thanks for the insider info d.d.

if the 416 costs the same as the 375 than it will be THE blue collar big bore (i think 375 is a medium bore and yes some say big starts @ 1/2")
