Perhaps a poll asking for "closest" rather than "first" shot would better give this info?
28 March 2009, 06:14
lavacaNot to be technical, but the question was the distance you took your FIRST shot at a (any) Cape Buffalo.

Very easy.
"Put a few rounds of 22 LR into their guts" Heavy breathing, as you might see in a B rated sex movie, "Leave the buffalo a few minutes to get mad", more heavy breathing "get the sucker who has paid you thousands of dollars to follow you", more heavy breathing, "walk up to the buffalo, and as he gets up and charges" the heavy breathing is into over drive now "you shoot him with the 600 Nitro Express", now he is almost out of breath "look straight into the camera, "and you think, this is the way to kill suckers buffalos for them, after all, this is what they pay me for!"

CARLOSTHEJACKALAfter crawling 50+ yards, bull was taken at roughly 60 yards. We just could not get any closer!

JBoutfishnFirst one was at about 70 yds, while not DOA, he was unable to rise. One shot finisher.
The last two at 25 feet were a lot more "interesting"

loud-n-boomerMy first shot at a Cape Buffalo was at approximately 90 yards offhand because that was as close as we could get due to the terrain. I got into a hurry to take the shot rather than waiting for my PH to set up the shooting sticks, rushed the shot, and shot high.
The next opportunity was two days later at another buffalo at about 30 yards; I slowed down, waited for the PH to set up the shooting sticks, and dropped the buffalo with the first shot.

Right at 50 yards, or less.
That is the right Margin for Error.

CanuckAll 3 of mine were between 50 and 70 yds when I took the first shot. All 3 had been the result of fairly long tracking jobs and many times we were much closer than 50 yards (as close as 5 yards on multiple occassions) but could not get a shot at the right bull. When the shots finally presented themselves, I took them.
