the 45-70 lever action does not need to be a 458 win mag...

why does ed stevens guide in alaska with a 45-70 lever action and not a 458 win mag??? cuzz he can put down a big grizz verrry fast with multiple shots

now an altered oal marlin...now that interests me...i think it could do 405's @ 2150 in the mid 40,000's psi. thats good for d.g.

I lot of guys seem to want to push the limits of these marlins, which I think is unwise. But I think this looks more like an accident of some sort rather than someone shooting a "hot" load. My guess is pressures were up around 100k psi. Maybe a double charge of a fast burning powder, maybe a lodged bullet in the barrel, or two bullets loaded in a case by accident. Or simply the wrong powder. Here's a guess, using Accurate #7 instead of reloader 7.

What is the story behind this? I'd like to know what load was used (or thought to have been used).

Like a guy I new that KBed his Ruger SBH using RedDot instead of BlueDot. After all, both labels were blue???

That load could have be designed incase your position is being overrun, 360 degree coverage.

I agree! But the questions are:

A. How did the pressure get too high? (ie, was it a double charge, 0or loaded too hot on purpose?)

B. What failed first?

Only the person who loaded the ammo (assuming it was NOT a factory load!) can answer the first one - what load was he using?

I assume, since it is the weakest link in the system, that the cartridge case failed, then the gas let out into the action did the rest!

(Seems that some of those XPERTS on the Marlin site think that rifle was a .450 Marlin, and NOT a .45/70 - not that it matters much!)

Could have been factory stuff,I shot some today that were so wimpy they could have got stuck in the barrel.Rem 405 gr sp.My 250 gr 45 colt loads are severe compared to this granny loaded crap.

If you go to the original link, it says the shooter had minor injury to this left, supporting, arm. He is OK.

It's funny when the cowboy fans tout the ability to put down game with multiple shots, and utterly miss the point that a proper big bore has the power to do it with one shot!

Drive a 400 gr 45 barnes or bonded bullet 2400 fps from a 458, and it is an entirely different level of performance than a 45-70 shooting 400 gr cast @ 1900 fps.

I own both a 458 and 45-70, I like them both but one time I follwed a hot receipe for the 45-70 and the recoil was so hard I had no confidence in the gun handling that type of performance.
As far as stopping dangerous game with a 45-70 it is the shooters choice, I hear the fact of multiple shots and that is a strong point with lever guns but what if you only have a one shot time slot, that what makes the double barrel rifle worth the price.

There are lots of bear guides that choose questionable guns for backup work. Honestly few guides have to shoot in life and death back up situations.

But back to the question at hand, are quick followup shots worth the trade off in not having something that can decisively get the job done with one shot???????????????

ed has been in several life and death situations and has used a lever 45-70 with success and that is his go to gun.
