got a question about a .458 lott

nickblazegot a question about a .458 lott
i'm relatively new to big bores, i've shot a few, and i just picked up my first one last week, .460 weatherby.
it kicks pretty good, and i haven't tried it without the brake yet...but basically what i'm looking for is another punisher.
i'm currently looking into getting a ruger no.1 in .458 lott. from what i understand this is a relatively light gun, and that single shot should thump pretty good.
does anyone have any experience with these? are they good rifles? and will the recoil i feel be as bad or worse than a .460?
05 May 2006, 20:28
congomikeIf you really want a punisher, buy a Ruger #1 in 375 H&H, put a nice, light synthetic stock on it, and have it rechambered for 378 Weatherby...and put the factory "recoil pad" back on the new stock. Your wish will be granted.

05 May 2006, 20:40
fla3006My Ruger #1 Lott isn't too bad but it has about 1/2 lb added to the buttstock. If you are want a bigger punisher than the 460, try a 505 or a 550. Not me.

boom stickyou could just go up behind a mule and yank his tail pretty hard...i am sure the recoil of getting kicked by a mule is pretty good.
good question...how many ft lbs of recoil does a mule give??? is it more of a shove or a jab?
a mule is pretty economical to feed hay is cheaper than loading components...just take it to the range and just be sure the backstop is behind you.
has anyone figured out the sectional density of a human?
i guess you could say a mule is a "pushfeed"

check this out...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=OyFmNfOwnX4all in good fun. i like a good amount of recoil too

tiggertateIf all you want is an example of more recoil, just uNscrew the brake. I think your wish will be fulfilled!

NortmanIm thinking of a #1 as well... maybe start in 458 lott, then rechamber it to something different.
How about the 458HE, spits a 300 grain bullet at 3600fps..
Should be fun on varmints..
Its basicly a 450NE.. hmm, should just do a 450NE. Does anybody know if one could load the NE to such levels?
05 May 2006, 21:50
bwanajcjIf you want a thumpin in a ruger #1 collectors firearms in houston has a #1 in 460 weatherby. I would bet it makes a 458 lott feel like nothing after cracking a few rounds off.jj

Ganyana.500 express who very occasionaly posts has a lovely light weight Ruger No 1 in .500 NE. Sure puts things down. Personally would opt for the .450 NE ( basically a .45-120) because then you can load it with a wide range of bullets for everything from hogs, through deer to elephant.
Tends to be one of those rifles that is a joy to carry in the hunting fields - recoil un noticed when there is stuff in front of you and a sissy pad an essential piece of range kit!
nickblaze...tiggertate is right. You already have the 460. Take off the brake and shoot it. steve

surestrikeTake the brake off that .460 and screw on a steel butt plate.
That ought to do it!
05 May 2006, 23:10
nickblazejust got back from the range without the brake on the .460. it definately thumps a little harder, i think i'll be feeling that for a few days.
this might sound strange, but i kind of have the big bore itch, quest for pain, whatever. and i've spent a lot of time reading about calibers i don't need. the .460 is big, and it definately hurts, is there more to be had?
i'll be honest, sick puppy or not, i'm lookin' for a whole lot more thump.
nickblaze..the I would try an unbraked 378 weatherby. It will be a lot sharper(faster) recoil than the big push of the 460.
06 May 2006, 00:28
congomikeActually I will amend my post...check out the videos on this forum of all the people shooting the 577 t-rex. That is a pretty heavy gun weight wise. So call A-Square, get one, and then start whittling down the stock and maybe have the barrel shortened. If you are still not satisfied, have the barrel turned down to a lighter contour...you could probably end up with an 8 lb 577 t-rex. If that doesn't do it, you are beyond help!

06 May 2006, 00:29
KennethIIf you want more, move up to the .585 or up calibers. Can't compare the .460 to what recoil these can produce.
06 May 2006, 01:54
jeffeossoactualy...
until you go to the 577 trex, the 460 weatherby, in facotry trim, with no brake, is one of the most unpleasant rounds to discharge for the shooter...
with a brake, for the spectators
the 550 mag is fairly easily mastered, the 585 nyati is about the same, the 550 express is not all that horrible once you get used to it, and the 505 and 500 jeffe aren't even in the same league
now, a 600 OK at 2500.......

So the first question is do you hand load? If not you're pretty much at the practical top end with a 460 or 378 unless you like $15-$30 a round or more.
If you hand load and want an easy step up go to the 550 Magnum. It made its bones on 700 gr bullets at 2350-2400 but that ain't the top end at all. On paper it should go to 2600. You could be the first to tell world it's true! You can get bullets to 900 gr and velocities too brutal to describe on a forum the chill'uns read.
Or go the other way and shoot 600 gr bullets so fast you pop a disk in your neck.
Nice thing about it is that since it is a Wby case opened up to 55 caliber it is really the big brother to the 460.
You can go with a 600 OK or bigger but I would take the 550 middle step first.

What about the .505 launching a 600 grainer to 2550 fps????? How does that compare??????

Buy one of the new Remington 798, 7 lb. 458 Win mags. Rechamber to 458 Lott and load some 550 gr. Woofdleighs to 2150 fps. That should put a smile on your face.

Rsm458LottI have a No.1 in 458Lott it kicks harder than my RSM but I don't think it's uncomfortable if standing. If anyone is interested I might sell this gun since I'VE got the RSM now.The gun is stainless lamineted stock,99% or better with box, papers lock and rings. Gun has been fired less than 20 times. I got the RSM shortly after and it"s been sitting in the safe.

That is EXACTLY what I have in mind...

That is, unless I get the Ruger #1 in .458 LOTT...

( thought I'd check in after being absent for a spell, and, hey! look what I found!

Great to see the quest for pain never stops on this board.

I got so tickled at "the sectional density of a human" and a mule being a "pushfeed" I didn't even get a chance to see the video. Didn't get in trouble..

The MetalsmithDid some thinking and I actually came up with a few horrible ideas if pain is what you want
-T/C Encore in .416 Rigby (I have one and it isn't pleasant, to say the least)
-Ruger #1 in .577 Nitro Express, unbraked
-October Country 4-bore single rifle
Or, if you're looking for a project
-Savage 210 w/ 1.5" straight bull barrel, 24" long, built to accept 12GaFH rounds.
Lol...actually that's my project going on right now.
Or...
For the most intense ever, for the most filling-chipping bone-breaking recoil you've ever felt, one that's gonna bring you to tears...

I shudder at the very thought of even holding one of these firearms.

nickblazeJim - thanks for the video, that definately looked like it hurt a little bit. was that a custom job or does someone still manufacture that rifle? if so, please let me know where i can find one.
metalsmith - thank you for your help with some rifles. the t/c .416 i have been considering quite seriously, that was one of the recommendations of a local gunsmith. the ruger in .577 ne also sounds interesting, i can't find any information on those being produced commercially however. i'm assuming this would also be a custom conversion?
i have said before my dad does custom work like this, so i don't have a problem with the labor/knowledge portion of converting a rifle, but i would prefer purchasing a rifle created to fire a specific cartridge. if you can point me in the direction of a .577 ruger i will order it immediately.

I always thought they were a muzzle loader.

The No.1 in .458 Lott is pretty brutal by my standards, I didn't care for it much... Every time I touched it off I had to re-adjust my glasses and put my ear muffs back in place.
Just out of curiosity; do you not like your retinas attached, or are you just looking to test a good eye surgeon some day?

09 May 2006, 17:04
nickblazethe recoil thing started a long long time ago. my dad was in the marine corps and everyone in his family has a very nice gun collection. i started shooting when i was 2 years old with an old remington single shot .22. he has pictures of me in diapers shooting at woodchucks. some people may not like that so much but i thought it was great.
i've been into shooting ever since, and he's been into trying to find me rifles that i can't shoot ever since. i got a .44 when i was 8 that he said i couldn't shoot, a .45-70 when i was 12, a 7mm when i was 14 for deer hunting, and some level 3 loads for the .45-70 when i was 15, lots of guns in between, but those being the biggest. i've been able to accurately shoot every gun he's ever handed me.
they got divorced when i was 16, and for the last 8 years i've been searching for that gun. i have found it with hand cannons, and i thought the .460 would do me for rifles, but it looks like i'm stuck until i find something else commercially available or hand over a CZ to my old man for conversion.
sorry for the novel, and probably too personal of a look into someone you don't knows past, but thats the reason for the big bores.
I once shot a 505 Gibbs at the bench and decided I wouldn't be able to hunt with it with any confidence. It just hit me too hard. My .416 Rigby is, I think, the one I can shoot with no subconscious fear when there is a scope mounted. Above that I would have to shoot with iron sights only, which is how they are meant to be shot anyway. Always a kick to shoot the big recoilers of course but hunting with one is another matter. I don't think I would buy a big recoiler just to get my jaw whacked at the range once in awhile.

I'm sure your father could help you with converting a Ruger to a big bore cartridge if the need comes up. Let me know if you need any more help.
