I have an odd request...

Tyler KempI have an odd request...
Does anyone have 50-140 brass and a supply of 50 BMG bullets? I'm thinking about reboring a 45-70 barrel to 50-140 for a Handi rifle. I would most likely shoot surplus BMG bullets and 750 grain Amaxes, so I would like to buy a dummy made that way.
Thanks,
Tyler

50-140 brass is weaker than circus lemonade. Try some 50-110 brass (Starline) its mo' heavy duty and better suited to what you wanna do.

congomikeIf you can, try and find Bell 50-140 brass. In the early 80's I rebarreled a Ruger No. 1 to 50-140 and used 600 gr. Barnes bullets. Before I started this project, I called and talked to Jim Bell, owner of Bell Brass at that time. I told him what I wanted to do, basically try and duplicate 510 Wells ballistics. We talked for quite awhile and in the end he told me that his brass would hold together for any load safe for the rifle. It had a 28" heavy barrel and was not that bad to shoot.
Macifej might be right about newer/different manufacturer's 50-140 brass, but I had no problems with Bell. And Starline makes GREAT brass!

Not a great idea.

I think it is too light weight and not a great choice for a truly heavey hitter.
What does your donor rifle weigh before lightening the barrrel by reboring it?

They are not much fun when they kick the cr#p out of you.
A #1 would be better and that with a new heavy weight barrel. Not cheap, but better!

577/500 and gibbs, TODAY is made from the SAME SLUG OF BRASS .. from JAMISON, as he makes them in the same basic run.
577/500 with a 1:15 twist, long throat, yeah sure.
Keith - remember, Rob, Rip, and Ed are shooting NEF chambered for the 12ga FH -- it would work fine.. there's minimal weight difference POTENTIAL between a NEF and a #1
50-140, as mac said, is a bad starting point,. though

Tyler KempI'm not sure what other cartridges would work with the Handi as far as fitting on the small frame.
It is 9 lbs as a 45-120 shooting at about 458 Lott ballistics. Recoil is somewhat fierce. I could probably add two more recoil reducers in the butt and a brake which should bring the recoil down a lot. Down the road I plan on getting a custom stock set for the Handi which will bring the weight up a lot. I would like a #1 as it would allow me to load to way higher pressures in the 45-120, but I can't afford one.

RobgunbuilderYou can get a Encore Rifle and a 50-70 barrel that can be rechambered to 50-110. I used to shoot Amaxs from a 50-70 that I simply throated with a 500a2 throater and they were Very very impressive out to 600 yrds. Used XMP5744 too. Trajectory is like a rainbow but good accuracy. Military .50BMG pulls are fun at short range but as you know are designed to spread, so accuracy is unobtainable beyond 200yrds. The Encore can take 65Kpsi and is a very versatile piece of gear for a young guy without alot of cash. You can get .416 Rigby barrels, Lotts and other customs that will HURT LIKE HELL! They come apart in seconds and I've cvarried them all over the world in suitcases that didnt scream GUN! Fun to hunt with too.-Rob

boom stickExactly my point... You can use I believe cheaper more readily avaliable Gibbs brass to make a rimless 577/500 there would be less smithing for a Gibbs rim over the 577/500 rim and headspace off the shoulder.

Idaho SharpshooterTyler,
find somebody to donate a 50BMG bullet, and I will fix you up with a 50-110 dummy. That brass is readily available from Starline, as are bullet moulds in any weight your shoulder can stand. You should learn to cast bullets about now. Think of 25-40 cents a pound wheel weights turning into 650-900gr bullets. 650's are ten to the pound, and less than a quarter per shot.

Tyler KempAnyone wanna send Sharpshooter a BMG bullet?
If I had a stronger action the 50-110 could probably do everything the 50-140 would do in the H&R...just in a smaller package. However, I'm stuck with the action I have for now, the H&R.

MacifejTyler - I think you missed a couple points here in the discussion. The 50-140 has never been nor is it now a modern high presseure cartridge. It is paper thin at the mouth and has very light structure at the web and pocket. It's fine for BP loads but that's it. A modern 50-110 case (Starline) is not the 50-110 of 100 years ago. It's a modern case which will take anything you can take. Your action is strong enough to handle the 50-110 as Rob pointed out he and Ed and RIP are using the same action to develop their 12GAFH loads. If you want to step up a bit - talk to Ed - he had an Encore receiver he wanted to sell and a factory 50-110 barrel could be had for that Encore for small money. FYI - a 1" straight tube in 26" works well - I had one.
18 March 2009, 21:12
J_ZolaTyler do the barrels change like a T/C contender or Encore? If they do will a 50-110 clean up a 50 S&W chamber? I know the H&R can be had in 50S&W.
19 March 2009, 04:05
Tyler KempI don't think they have the same bore size...but I could be wrong. It was suggested that I rebore a 45-70 to .508 and rechamber

Macifej500 S&W is a .500" bore and 50-110 is a .510" bore.

Tyler,
There is a good chance that Rocky Mountain Cartridge made the turned brass cases.

Idaho SharpshooterTyler,
ran a few tests with my 1886 Winchester. Is a 650gr bullet at 2000fps enough for you? Next step up is a 550 Gibbs if not. You could build a Wickliffe 76 over the summer and chamber it for Ed Hubel's 585HE. That should satisfy you. Of course it may also derail puberty if you are not careful!!

PS: you can buy a W76 complete action for about $450 shipped.
