I like some of the G&H rifles, but they sure seem to bring a premium!

I like them pretty well, but not as much as most of the people that have them for sale.

It looks nice, but I would be thinking double rifle at those prices.

I wonder if the two-digit serial number implies a very early model or if it's just a custom vanity number?

Griffin & Howe started making rifles in 1923 and offered the .35 & .400 Whelen as their large bore rifles. In order to keep competitive with Hoffman Arms they started in about 1926 offering magnum calibers such as the 375 H&H, 416 and .350 G&H on commercial Mauser actions and started with two-digit numbers for this type of rifle.

I have checked up on various web pages for the grand old english gunmakers, and what they charge for old, FUGLY mausers is just ridiculous.
This G&H is actually not bad, but 9K is still ridiculous.

Bent; our Viking colleague.....

Your English writing is suburb and I enjoy alot of what you write, personally I couldn't put two words together in Norwegian to save myself.

The above thread would appear to imply in context that that G&H is an English gunmaker?

Gerry,

Thanks.

Well, maybe I was not clear on that one, Griffin & Howe are absolutely American, but IMO follows the same path as the old english gunmakers were name is the main reason for high price.

I saw a Westley Richards made Mauser, so butt fugly, cheep wood, bad checkering, no enraving, as plain as a Savage 110, going for 4000 dollars!

Again, the above G&H is not bad, but not worth 9 K, IMO!!!

Then again, collectors value differently.

A few months ago there was an auction from a major G&H collector. The collection brought way more than any one thought. WAY more. Ever since then G&H prices have gone through the roof. This seller has a lot of high quality guns. I'm sure he knows what he's got.

I use Griffin & Howe for most of my riflesmithing. Their attention to quality is superb.

The custom G&H rifles exhibit a high degree of hand built quality. My problem with them is purely taste. Large black forends, low cut handles and teardrop cheekpieces just don't appeal to me.

To state the obvious, they offer quality workmanship and high collector value but over the years, I've seen very few examples that did not appear "dated" to my eye, in one way or other. Generally, I do not care for them.

Bent,

I agree 100%.

G&H is a quality product IMHO but the current asking price is a bit steep. You'd be surprised - alot of guys get their asking price for "collector" pieces.

I couldn't agree with you more on the seemingly huge degree of difference in quality and workmanship on English bolt action rifles from the big-name players. Some great and others where you scratch your head and wonder what all the hullabulu is about?

bewildered

Their forté was and remains fine shotguns and double rifles.

It’s true that after the Emil McConnell collection was sold in March that the prices of classis custom rifles in general and Griffin & Howe rifles in particular rose dramatically. What most people failed to recognize IMO was the McConnell rifles were for the most part all special rifles many like new or heavily engraved by the greats such as Kornbrath or Fugger. Many dealers raised their prices after the auction and they are still unsold today.

I have some pictures of a 300 H&H made by Hoffman that was at least $2K less and it looked much nicer. I also have some of a nice 375 H&H Hoffman that was less than $8K too...

I like the style but I think you pay too much for the name considering it's not H&H, Westley Richards, or Rigby.

Plus it doesn't even have a quarter rib...

If I could afford an american classic it would be a Hoffman.

Mike...my apology as I didn't mean to infer that the gun was overpriced in that way....it was my meaning that in order to sell it to ME it would have to be lowered that much. There's all kinds of alternatives in my world that cost so much less and are of equal value to me.

This obviously is a gun that I like but don't see the value as many others do.

Nothing to apologize for, we all have different ideas and backgrounds and everyone looks at these with a different eye. I have been collecting pre-1940 custom rifles and information for many years and learned early on that I could buy several 1903 Springfield sporters for what one Mag-Mauser would have cost me. For the record I know the rifle in question but not the seller, IMO the rifle is priced as if it were engraved. If you follow the link to the Hoffmans which were made about the same time as the G&H they are engraved and sold for 9k each.

Yeah that auction really did get the G&H guns kick-started....They are always excellent and are good shooters as well. Unfortunately for those not interested necessairly in collecting they are getting too pricey for shooters. The best value out there is still the pre-64 Win 70s, esp. in Supergrade.

That gun will bring that kind of money because the G&H crowd is driving the pricing these days.....guess it's like everything else - timing is everything. 2 years ago it would have been 3-4k max. Oh, and it will be a very narrow marketplace to unload it if you want to sell.

Otherwise - really nice .375.

Jeff

Michael,
Thanks for providing the link. There was a Hoffman 6.5 there as well, with a $500-700 estimate... that would be a great deal.

I like the peep sight/leaf sight combination, and the stippling on the folding leaves. I've seen a few Hoffmans with that -- a nice touch, not to mention that gold engraving is perfect.
