Hornady DGS Bullets
The new DGS bullets from Hornady are looking promising. Here's a cross-section of the 300gr 375 bullet. The steel thickness at the nose is 0.100" and tapers to about 0.055" at the base.

This is a "true" solid, not a monometal.

Glad to see the FP

We drove out and picked up some of the solids this morning. These were the 480 grain, .458 dia. Full dia. up to the crimp groove.

They are out already?

I sectioned one of the 500 gr. 458 solids and it looks the same as the 375 bullet, except I can't get a good pic of it.

Okay, if these are "out" where have you guys been getting these. I'm looking for some in .375 H&H, 300 grains. Midway doesn't have them yet and so I called Hornaday DIRECT and tried to order some from them and was told they are "new" for 2008 and have NOT been made yet. Are you guys sure its the new DGS that you have and are talking about here??

Seems that when Hornady brings out new bullets they are always cheap, but soon jump way up in price. I'd buy now if you can get them! I bought a bunch of the 458's.

bh1,

Send me a PM if you really want some.

Will and mancannon,

Have you cycled them through your rifles yet?

Do they feed well?

As far as I can tell, they are the new DGS bullets, or at least the Hornady item numbers are matching up correctly, 3727. Please correct me if I'm wrong...

I just loaded up 5 rounds for the 375H&H and they feed perfectly in my M70. It's been slicked up by Penrod, so I wasn't too worried. Good to check though patriot

in .458, 480 grain, darn right. Pictures match, labels match book. Magnetic holds them, have flat nose, haven't loaded any in bolt gun since they are forthe .450 nitros (3.25, 3.5 and .500/450 3.25)
Shot some today. left barrel a little further to the left of the right compared to Woodleigh, but temp of the air was down 65 deg. as well. Spot on at 6 o'clock. RL 15 Powder, velocity was down 150 fps in round numbers. (That seemed a bit much?)
I didn't buy any of the softs as I only need solids. May try to poke an elephant with it next week.

Does the cannelure location of the 480 grain also work for bolt action ctgs?

An update for those who are interested...

The 300gr 375H&H load with 76.0gr of H4350 clocked out at an average of 2510fps for three shots. Temperature is 20F, shot out of a 24" barrel.

I got mine from Midway. It's not entirely obvious when you're looking, but check the "fine" print against Hornady's product codes. Tis interesting if these aren't available yet. Confused

Yes, the FP is an improvement of the nose,
but it is an "FMJ Solid," a tri-metal bullet if you count the copper wash on the steel jacket.

The only "true solid" is a monometal solid.

"FMJ Solid" is a readily acceptable oxymoron, especially when the steel at the nose is as thick and flat as the Hornady "DGS."

Crimp groove is in a differnt place than the 500 grain. I don't think you gain any powder space in .458 Win, but it could sure be loaded.

I think it would still make a good load, buy OAL will be less

I wonder how long the rifling will last shooting steel jacketed solids like this?
Something got to give then the rifling is pounded into the sides of this slug.
Maybe the lead core gets extruded from the base like tooth paste from a tube?
Metal is incompressible I doubt the jacket is forced to grow longer.

The copper protects the rifling. When you recover a solid, you can't see any exposed steel.

Guys have been shooting steel jacketed solids for probably over a hundred (?) years.

what is the distance from the nose to the closest-to-nose of the crimping grove, and the overal length?

quite whining about conventional solids. its not becoming, and disrespectful to kynock and woodliegh

Will,

Guys are still shooting steel jacketed copper coated "solids."

Most Russian, Chinese, and former East block countries military small arms ammo have steel jackets w copper coating with lead core or lead sheath around mild steel (Rockwell B50) core.

Their ctg "brass" is also steel but with laquer coating so it wont oxidize.

Shoot 30 rounds of AK ammo full auto and it smells like fresh paint.

PS For those of you looking for a FMJ w lead core FN, Alaska Bullet Works (Kodiak) makes a 450 and 500 grain truncated cone FN w bonded lead core.

This should eliminate all or most of the tooth paste tube extrusion of lead base. They are a thick copper jacket though, no steel.

I asked on the DGX, not DGS, and got this reply

the length is 1.340 and the ogive length is about .700 to the middle of the cannelure.

Unfortunately, it didn't work out. The H&H went "missing" for 15 days and the trip was over.
