Straight from the box,
Hawkeye Matte Stainless .416 Ruger "Alaskan" 20":

Top to bottom:
.395 Ruger Max: 24" in Ruger Tupperware stock, 7.75#
.375 Ruger African: 23" in HS precision stock, 8.25# (7.75# in Ruger walnut "African" stock)
.375 Ruger Alaskan: 20" in Ruger Canoe Paddle stock, 7.25# (8.25 pounds in Ruger-Hogue stock)
.416 Ruger Alaskan: 20" in Ruger-Hogue stock, 8.0#

Two stocks offered by Ruger with the Hawkeye African, 1.75# walnut, and Alaskan, 2.5# Hogue Rubberized:

Three muzzle diameters:
.375 African 23": ~.670"
.375 Alaskan 20": ~.675"
.416 Alaskan 20": ~.755"

The .395 Ruger muzzle (24") in the middle is ~.700":

Barrel diameters near the forend tip of the Hogue stock are similar for all three of the Ruger factory rifles:
The .375 Ruger African 23": ~.805
The .375 Ruger Alaskan 20": ~.795"
The .416 Ruger Alaskan 20": ~.810"
(Not shown here, oops, the .395 Ruger Max diameter at the same location is ~.830", and that is a McGowen No.4 sporter)

These Ruger factory barrels are all similar to no.4 taper, except that the .375s are more tapered (20" has a little more taper than the 23") and the .416 is less tapered.

The .375 is a little lighter than a no.4 sporter, and the .416 is heavier, close to a no.5 sporter, lightened by shortening.
Special Ruger contours!

Rifle metal weight, removed from stocks:

.375 African 23": 6.00#
.375 Alaskan 20": 5.75#
.416 Alaskan 20": 5.50#
.395 Ruger Max 24": 6.25#

Stock weights:

Ruger-Hogue Rubberized, aluminum pillars: 2.5#
HS Precision, full aluminum bedding block: 2.25#
Ruger Walnut Hawkeye African, slim and trim: 1.75#
Ruger Tupperware: 1.5#
Ruger Canoe Paddle: 1.5#

1-Pound stock? Brown Precision? Rimrock?

Mix and match and figure the dry weight.

With a 1-Pound stock, the .416 Ruger would weigh 6.5# dry!

Calling Will!
Surely Will would want to turn the barrel down to make it balance better with the 1-pound stock.
A 6.00 to 6.25-pound .416 Rigby equivalent?

That top picture looks good.

What a shame they don't have the big M70 recoil lug and if the front screw was vertical and placed in the middle of the bedding platform.

Nice work RIP!! Excellent reference material for those of us who aren't sure which way to go yet.

How much barrel can be squeezed into the factory Hogue stock if a guy makes the .395 conversion. Fatter than the #4 sporter ..??

The top picture is the only one that was blurred, sorry,
but it was the last one I snapped, as a hurried afterthought, and it will just have to do.
Glad you don't mind.

The combination of the 45-degree front action screw with the tiny primary recoil lug, well, it is like compensating errors,
it shoots well despite itself!

Those 45-degree pillars may be harvested from Hogue stocks with a hacksaw. Wink

Macifej,
The Hogue stock is not a precise metal to rubber fit. Big Grin
There is room for a standard No.4 sporter (McGowen, Douglas, etc.), without having to "sand the rubber."

If you want to do a standard no.5 sporter you will have to "sand the rubber."
But that is a hollow forend and just releiving along the edges with "sanding the rubber" should allow for a true no.5 sporter contour.

Even the .416 Ruger is "free floating" in the Hogue forend tip.
Standard No.4 sporter contour is a little bigger at that point.

The .375 Ruger and .416 Ruger barrels are about the same there, a little smaller at the forend tip location than a standard No.4. ... they just taper differently from there out.

Ruger just need to add 300 and 338 on that 375 case and even a 270 and they would have the whole family. Surely it would be timely with M70 off the planet somewhereBig Grin

A 300 and 375 Ruger would be a nice combo.

Does the Ruger Alaskan .416 truly come with a barrel band sling stud? Pictures on the Ruger website do not show a barrel band sling stud.

Thanks.

NorthGaAire,
Yes it does. It is skinny and stainless and installed at the factory.
The .375 Rugers did not have one.
Would have been a nice touch on the African.
At 8-pounds-even, in the Hogue stock with 20" barrel,
The .416 Ruger is well balanced and handy.
Should sell well in Alaska, eh?

I'll bet the Hogue stock is more durable than a CZ fancy "black walnut" stock.

MopaneMike:
I intend to put pillars and extra crossbolt in that African stock, and glass bed it to the African metal.

RIP,

Thanks for the confirmation. I wish my Hawkeye African came with a barrel band. I checked the front sight to see if it would come off easily without requiring a re-blue - it would not. I have a 77 MK II laminate stock that might get a .416 Alaskan barrelled action - unless the African .416 that is supposedly coming soon looks really, really good. i.e. barrel band sling stud, better bedding, etc.

Same here, I'd like to have a bb sling swivel on my 375 african. Can't see a way without refinishing the barrel, though.

You can get the two piece clamp-on barrel band swivels if you can't live w/o them.

So making the big assumption that all the wood stocks weigh 1.75 lbs., a stumpy 416 w/said stock should weigh 7.25 lbs. That's pretty exciting.

The first picture is the best.
My 416 weights 10 LBS. I don't not know how my stock weights. If I was changing stocks then I would know.
