For you fellows that have been tinkering out there. What is powder capacity advantage of a 416 ruger necked up to a 458 caliber as compared to a 458 WM and for that matter, how does it compare to the 458 Lott?
458 caliber is such a small niche market; probably the reason Ruger has not introduced such a cartridge or recoil would be hard to manage in their current offering of rifles.

the 416 ruger displaces the need for my 416 accrel, but a 458x375 ruger leaves .02 per side.. it will work, i've proven that, but its very slim, and not likely to be commerical

What kind of realistic velocity can one expect with a 500 gr. bullet in the 458/416 Ruger without compaction and high pressure.

That 2200 mark is exactly what I was targeting. It may just be my first wildcat in my safe.

Sounds good to me, 2200 FPS with a 500 gr. bullets has been killing big mean ugly stuff for years, and recoil recovery is very fast.

A drop box, wood stocked, iron sighted, 458 Ruger, tossing out a 500 gr. bullet at even 2150 FPS is perfect, low pressure, no compaction of powder, with acceptable recoil and fast recover, has a ring to it that I can live with, and the drop box is available in the form of a 338 drop box from a number of outlets, the Ruger round fits the 338 box with perhaps a tad of tinkering, the one I tried fit without tinkering...

That will be my next African rifle. I have two to build then I will start on that one for myself.

I dummied up for the .458/.375 Ruger, but forgot about it after I had a .458 B&M built by SSK.
That one can be lighter and shorter and ballistically beats the .458 WinMag by a small margin, though will not quite equal the .458/.375 Ruger.
Of course the .458 Accrel beats them all ballistically, but is not as short or light as a .458 B&M.
The .458 AccRel can be built to same weight and length as the .458/.375 Ruger, but is ballistically superior.

I think the .458/.375 Ruger (or .458/.416 Ruger, if you prefer to call it that, same thing)
has a minimal shoulder, but it will work.
Either the .458 B&M or .458 AccRel are better cartridges, IMHO, for their own reasons.
The minimal rebate of the RUM brass used for both is of no consequence.
The zero rebate of the .458/.375 Ruger rim is the only non-significant advantage of doing that wildcat,
instead of either of the other two.
