Dr B375 Ruger Barrel Length
I have a FN mauser action at Kevin Weavers waiting for the case specs so we can order the reamer.
I'm using a Kriger Chrome Moly barrel
I plan on using the rifle is Alaska and Africa.
Does any one have a opinion on the barrel length and contur.

GroveI got this from the Hornady web site ... they show pictures and list specs for the loaded ammunition. From its description, it sounds a great deal like a slightly over sized 280 Howell.
http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=482375 Ruger You've Never Shot Anything Like This Before!
When a new cartridge bears the names of two American shooting sports legends, it had better be something special. Hornady's new 375 Ruger is just that!
This newly designed powerhouse is slightly larger in diameter than the 30-06, but shares the same case overall length, which means it can be chambered in ANY standard length action. All this and it still out performs the 375 H&H but with a 20" barrel.
The 375 Ruger will set new standards for African big game rifles and ammo:
270 gr SP-RP, Perfect for longer shots up to 300 yards.
300 gr RN, Expanding bullet that transfers energy quickly and creates a large wound cavity while delivering ecellent penetration.
300 gr FMJ-RN, Jacketed bullet that penetrates the toughest hides in the world--first time, everytime.
Velocity (fps)/Energy (ft/lb) Trajectory Tables
375 Ruger muzzle 100 yds 200 yds 300 yds muzzle 100 yds 200 yds 300 yds
270 gr SP-RP 2840/4835 2600/4052 2372/3373 2156/2786 -1.5 1.8 0.0 -8.0

HunterJimRuger is putting a 20" barrel on their Alaskan version, and a 23" barrel on the African version. I have had or have 20", 23.6" (i.e. 600 mm), 24", 25" and 25.5" .375s.
I would plan for 24" barrel, and suit the barrel contour to the style of rifle you want to have. I am thinking .625" for the lightest and .675" at the muzzle for the heaviest.

CanuckI am a little bummed by Ruger's choices for the Alaskan and African models. I would love to have a stainless/synthetic version with a 23" or 24" barrel. I hate 20" barrels on a hunting rifle (except my trusty M94 Trapper of course).
I guess I'll have to get my gunsmith to put one together the way I want it instead..
Cheers,
Canuck

TumbleweedI'm not one to get all hot & bothered about new calibers, and in my herd there's not a WIZZUM or a RUM or anything younger than a .338 (which I still view as a bit of an upstart!).
But I LIKE the idea of a standard length .375.
I think this undrilled/untapped FN Mauser action I've been hoarding for a 9.3x64 just might have to be forsaken to this frillydilly newfangled doodad that Ruger and Hornady dreamed up.

So, who has a reamer?

Are you 100% curtain that a FN 98 action will be ok ( strong enough) for the new 375 Ruger cartridge?

Is the strength of a comercial FN Mauser action from a JC Higgins 30-06, a concern for the 375 Ruger.

Might look like an ostrich swallowing a grapefruit when you shoot it, but it would be a delight to carry all day.

I like light barrels too; I have a couple of early J.C. Higgins -'06s that have the paper thin barrels, and they shoot just as well as the heavier ones. Just like pointing a pool cue.
