Does anyone know anything about this new Mauser? Survival of the fittest? That's just natural selection.

Cabela's has one in that weirdo caliber .404. (I think the slug diameter is actually .421 or .423). It looks like a polished up Savage with barrel switch capablity. The sights appear to be made by ERA. I would add some cash and buy Heym Magnum Mauser instead. PS. Look at Voere, they offer something similar looking to 03 Mauser, and it might be less expensive. They offer .500 something. Now, that's African!

Gabriel, They're not so new here in Europe, been around for a few years. Try this - pretty much explains it all. I can't figure out for the life of me why one of the most famous rifle companies in the world decided to put all their efforts into Push Feeds; especially for DG rifles..... http://www.mauser.com/M-03-Africa.133.0.html?&L=1 Cheers, Number 10

I've seen the online material, i was wondering about experience. I also don't understand why briley sells them $1000 more than frankonia.de My neigbour had a Voere in 8x68S, but i thought the stock looked funny. I would probably go with the Sauer 202, I like that better...or a Blaser. Survival of the fittest? That's just natural selection.

Gerry, It seems that Mauser essentially created the M03 as a non-DG rifle to compete with Blaser and Sauers switch barrel rifles. All of these 3 started out in PG calibres, and then "evolved" up to including DG calibres as well. I have handled all three (although I have not shot with a M03 yet), and previously owned a Blaser. If I were to pick one of these for a PG rifle, I'd go for the M03. And according to Mauser, they will soon be releasing a synthetic stock too, as both Blaser and Sauer has. This will most likely make the M03 a lot more attractive for a great number of buyers who desire that feature, since at the moment only wood is available. But with all that mentioned, many people do use Blasers and Sauers in DG calibres on DG. Probably far more people than the CRF crowd is willing to acknowledge! For example, Norbert Hansen who is a member here, uses a Blaser in 458 Lott(?) on more elephant every year than most people will hunt in a life time. So I would think that the M03 can be no worse. FWIW, people I've talked to here in Norway, or heard of, are all very pleased with their M03's.

I've handled a few, they feel a little bit like a club- not terribly elegant, but not bad. Do you guys agree that the M03 can function like a take down rifle i.e. take off the barrel and pack it in a suitable takedwon case- for ease of travel? ______________________________ "Are you gonna pull them pistols,...or whistle Dixie??" Yes. Those who I've talked with have said they have no change in POI when taking the barrel and/or scope off and on.

Hi Everyone, Good exchange here and already some similar observations. Swiss Arms, Blaser, Mauser are all subsidiaries of the same company so it could be conceivable that the "modular" system concept is their current predominant engineering consideration? I don't know this to be a fact; only my $0.02 worth..... I've got a Blaser with select set of barrels and am more than pleased with my decision. The local Kettner store is full of Blaser, Mauser & Sauer, so I've seen and handled them all including lurking about the Sales Room enough to hear the sales pitches for the entire gamut of rifles. The take-downs (both Mauser & Sauer) appear to be excellent quality, seriously practical, good-looking rifles and those that have purchased them that I've spoken to (like Erik relates) are genuinely satisfied. I loved the Mauser for their Right/Left availability (I'm leftie) and was all ears when I found out I could order a L/H Mauser in .404J but then the cocking piece on the bolt and push feed put me off. Sorry, if I'm gonna go all out for a .404J or larger bore than my .375H&H (I've a Model 70 & a Blaser R93 in this chambering) then it's gonna have all the original Mauser Bells & Whistles. Like 404WJJeffery says; I also thought the Mauser felt a little "Clubby" too (excellent adjective). As for the price difference between Briley & Frankonia; I think it's pretty much a reflection of the €uro/$ imbalance and would come out just about right considering the local Kettner sticker price; US Import Duties and some profit thrown in. Not that the €uro/$ equation is good for business - just a fact of life. Cheers, Number 10

Is anyone put off by the weight of the M03 Africa? It is 9 lbs 12 oz unscoped in the 404, and I note a kick stop is standard on all Africans. Yes it helps with recoil, but the 375 for example is not a lot of kick......Iam weighing the standard M03 in 375 vs the African, and thinking about lugging those extra pounds around... Any input? Any African owners out there? ______________________________ "Are you gonna pull them pistols,...or whistle Dixie??" Josie Wales 1866
