mstarlingCongratulations!
The .458 AR performance is amazing with a 22" bbl ... I'll bet you'll very much enjoy the .470 AR!!!
What does the rifle weigh?

jeffeossoMike,
I PROMISE, you are going to laugh at the recoil level, at 2150 in that setup ...
Lets hear how it goes .. and I have some turnbel 350 and 400 gr bullets
Thanks for joining the 470 AR !
16 August 2009, 05:43
MJinesRifle weighs 9.6 pounds unloaded. The rear sight is an NECG adjustable mounted on a Leupold base. I have a Ghost Ring that mounts on a Weaver base that I am thinking of trying out too.
What no recoil? No punishment? No blurred vision? Hell what's the fun in that.

jeffeossoRemember that day we were shooting your 470 and mine? 500gr at 2150, you'll chuckle, say "gee, that was fun" and do it again!

Hog KillerMike, put the ghostring sight on it and you will not regret it.
Now all you need is a four wheeler to go hog hunting with it. Saving your really nice guns for Africa.

buckeyeshootergood looking rifle! Let us know how it shoots!
17 August 2009, 03:19
MJinesHere is the range report. Shot 15 rounds, 5 loaded with 80 grains of H335, 5 with 81 grains and 5 with 82 grains. The average velocities were:
80: 2116 fps
81: 2156 fps
82: 2199 fps
Extreme spreads 13 fps (80 grain), 44 fps (81 grains) and 11 fps (82 grains). No pressure signs with any of the rounds, easy bolt left, primers not flattened, etc.
All loads shot accurately. Unfortunately the rear sight has no windage adjustment so for me it is a tad left. Recoil is a piece of cake, not bad at all for a 9.6 pound rifle. Shot 15 rounds of the .470 AR and 10 rounds of .500 NE and no sore shoulder or cheek. All off of sticks.
Preliminary Assessment: Pretty darned impressed. Getting between 2150 and 2200 fps with a 500 grain Woodleigh Solid with no serious recoil and a rifle light enough to carry. May have to rethink my battery for October.

shootawayI thought it was jeffeosso.Mike,I guess this is the rebore you were talking about.
18 August 2009, 06:31
MJinesI bought the barreled action from Head Trauma. He set up the rear sight. It is an interesting set up. I just need to make a mental windage adjustment and let fly.
Have not gone the rebore route yet. If I do it will a rebore of a Ruger RSM in .458 Lott to .470 AR.

mstarlingMike,
You gotta winner there! H335 does nice things in my .458 AR as well. When my ammo arrived in Limpopo (425 gr Rhinos at 2400 fps), we sighted-in the rifle (a hunk of junk in comparison to yours) and it shot a clover leaf! Gotta admit I was proud!
A little drift on the sights will put it into the center and you'll be GOLDEN

MJinesNo drift is possible. The NECG sight is affixed to the Leupold sight base so there is no way to move it left or right. Gotta rely on good old fashion windage correction.
Mike
18 August 2009, 07:05
Charles_HelmIs there no way to drift the front sight?
18 August 2009, 07:29
jro45With my CZ 458 American Safari Lott I can shoot the 500 Solid at 2355 FPS. With a 550 SP I shoot it at 2150 FPS. The Solid is loaded with 85gr of IMR4320.

Nope, it is an NECG banded front sight with a slide in (from the front) insert.

Just grab that front sight with a pair of vice grips and bend her over to the side!

MJinesI am just going to have my head adjusted slightly to the right. Everything else about me leans to the right, why not my head too?
Mike
18 August 2009, 21:06
mstarlingMike,
I now understand the problem. No doubt the simplest solution is to learn to "aim right" slightly.
As a matter of curiosity, does this sort of thing result from the rear sight mount not being exactly centered or does it result from torque imparted to the bullet from rifling induced spin?
Thoughts?

MJinesCandidly, I think it is me. I think that the way I hold rifles results in the point of impact being slightly left. It seems that on almost every rifle that I shoot with open sights I need to adjust the rear sight to the right slightly to center the point of impact. I guess I could be like a golfer and try to work on technique or be lazy and just move the sight. I generally do the latter.

jeffeossoMike,
want me to mill slots in the bases, so you can have some drift?
i think i have an xs ghost ring base for a m70.. scope it!!
18 August 2009, 23:09
tiggertateWell, if it mattered enough, you could probably buy the thickest partridge blade insert they make and mill one side off. Or get a whole new insert made. Not a big deal to do. Nice gun!

I would be interested in the XS Ghost Ring if you have one. The one I have is set up for another rifle and when you mount it to the Weaver base it will not mount flush to the receiver.

I mentioned a non-adjustable rear sight to Duane Weibe and he suggested rotating the banded front sight to get the rifle shooting to center.
I would guess doing this would cause an issue with the bluing in your case, but the front sight would not need to be rotated too far to get things lined up.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry

boom stickWelcome to the 470 AR club

The 470 AR is a peach of a round.
Shoot 470 Nitro loads in a sub 10 LB gun loaded and scoped without thinking about it. I was amazed the first time I shot it. El Jeffe. Did you ever figure out the video footage you took on that camera of me shooting it and others to show how easy it is?
Try the 400 grain speer gold dots @ 2400 for some fun! All shots on pigs exited even with 2.5 feet of travel. With the 400 grainers it is a pop gun.
19 August 2009, 10:09
jeffeossoMike has shot the 400gr'ers at 2500...
scoping it is awesome, it kicks pretty light with 500gr at 2150...
but, and i dont say this lighty, mike is a much better shot than me
and don't feel bad mike, i shooot everyone's pistols a bit low.. due to my sight picture

Yes. 82 grains of H335, F215M primer, and a 500 grain Woodleigh Solid. Actually about 2195 fps.
